Best Ever Overnight Oatmeal in a mason jar

My family is in love with this overnight oatmeal idea!

I especially love how the consistency is thick, creamy and not at all soggy or slimy. I used blueberry Greek yogurt and almond milk so I didn’t need to add any additional sweetener. If you are using a plain yogurt, you may want to add a little honey or more fruit.

Other onlinemonly used ingredients in overnight oats are vanilla extract, peanut butter, cacao powder, chia seeds for added nutrition, and cinnamon & raisins. Have fun making your own creation.

Enjoy!

  1. Sonya

I usually add apples and golden raisins.

  2. mel

I do steel cut oats, almond milk, chopped apples & walnuts and a tsp or so of coconut sugar. Will have try it with Greek yogurt next time!

    • Stacey

do you just put the steel cut oats in the night before and eat them cold in the morning?

      • mel

Yes, the night before. Steel Cut oats are very chewy onlinepared to rolled oats. My kids prefer the overnight method vs when I cook them on the stove. In the morning, I prefer to let it warm up to room temp before eating. Neither I nor the kids are big on cold oatmeal! If I’m in a rush, I zap in the microwave for 30 seconds or so, just enough to take the chill off.

  3. Amanda M

Could it be warmed up? does it have yo mason jars? Or could ziplock containers work?

    • jeanette

I put mine in Tupperware cups and put them in my husband’s lunch box for the next day! the mason jars just make them look pretty! 😉

      • mel

You can use whatever container you have! I prefer to use glass over plastic though and I use a large round pyrex bowl that I use and then dish out in the morning for everyone to eat.

      • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

        Yes awesome!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

It can be warmed to room temp although I never knew chilled oatmeal could taste so great! Ha it’s just your preference. Use any container with a lid!

  4. jeanette

I have made this several times (adding some peanutbutter, too!) and wow, is it yummy!!! filling, too! thanks for sharing!

  5. Tonya

    I love overnight oats 🙂

  6. Natalie

How long will this keep? Do you have to eat it the next morning?

    • Jennifer

I’ve made these with blueberries, raspberries and chia seeds and they usually last me the entire week.

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

I’d say about 5 days? If it gets a little too thick add a little more liquid. Enjoy

  7. jennifer

I can’t believe I haven’t heard of this. Can’t wait to try, thanks Lina!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

I know! I had no idea about this until a few weeks ago…It’s so great, enjoy!

  8. Lori Stevens

LOVE this idea! Thanks for sharing, Lina. 😃

  9. Yessenia

I’m sorry for the silly question but what are rolled oats? Does the package say rolled oats? I tried to see the beautiful pic you provided Lina but I can’t tell. Thanks for the awesome idea!

    • Jay

The kind of oatmeal you would normally cook for 5 minutes, not the instant. Some will say rolled or Quaker says old fashioned.

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Yes just regular old fashioned oats like Quaker..not the instant. thanks!!

  10. Melissa

I have done something similar with plain Greek yogurt, ground flax seeds, and frozen strawberries.

  11. Patty

I love love your mason jars and the design on them. What brand are they and where can you find them? The recipe looks yummy as well! 🙂

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

These are inexpensive Ball brand jelly jars. I believe they are the quilted crystal kind. They can be found at many grocery stores, Walmart, and on amazon. Thanks!

      • Patty

        Thanks so much!

        • Tatyana

I bought mine at Bed Bath and Beyond with 20% off coupon last year

  12. Amanda

Love making this! Sounds kinda strange at first, but after trying it for the first time, I was hooked! The variations are endless, and I love adding in chia seeds and ground flax for extra nutrition as well.

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      I know I’m hooked too 🙂

      • Deb

Uncooked oats? There’s no raw oat taste?

        • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

It soaks up the liquid so they beonlinee soft, so no doesn’t taste raw. Thanks!

  13. Aleksandra

It says to onlinebine the fruit yogurt and oats the night before, when do you add in the milk? Nothing is mentioned about milk in the directions.

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Oops! Sorry! We meant…onlinebine the milk, oats, and yogurt, then refrigerate overnight. Thanks! Fixed.

  14. Krissy

Love making refrigerator oatmeal. The recipe I have calls for Chia seeds. I love the texture of the seeds when they sit in the oatmeal. They are also very good for you.

  15. RL

i literally eat this every morning! I make 6 or 7 jars on the weekend and it lasts the whole week. In my experience it’s better to leave the fruit out (extends the shelf life) and add the fruit in the morning. I like to add dried fruit and some frozen berries in the am.. something about the added crunch. 🙂 Also I typically use Almond or Coconut milk + chia seeds + ground flax.

  16. Karen

My daughter is allergic to dairy, but we use soy milk for her. Could I make it with just the soy milk (vanilla flavor) and skip the yogurt? Do you think I would just double the amount of milk?

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Yes! Use more milk but maybe like 2/3 cup for every 1/2 cup oats so it’s not super thin! Thanks!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

I was thinking you could add apple sauce to make a little thicker too!

    • Jennine

They also make soy yogurt. There are often 1$ off coupons-soy delicious brand

  17. Karen

The unhealthy versions I’ve tried have mini choco chips, mini marshmallows, pb chips, coconut…

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Oh choc chips would be great like an oatmeal choc Chip cookie…

  18. LIsa

This sounds so yummy, and it could be plan-approved for ” Trim Healthy Mama”… I’ve been on their plan for 4-5 months and LOVE it. Thanks for the great idea!

  19. Mary

I’ve been eating this for 2 years…..love it:)

  20. Heather C.

Okay, all I’ve got on hand is instant oats and regular (not greek) yogurt…. Wonder what the outonlinee would be? Maybe I’ll just try it and see what happens.

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      I’m sure it’ll be great too! 🙂

      • Heather C.

Okay, thanks… I’ll make a serving of it tonight and post the results in the morning! 🙂

  22. Dee

I’m gonna try this for my husband but I’m not sure if he will like cold oatmeal

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

  25. Darcie

Can’t wait to try this! I’ve always liked cold oatmeal (I eat instant oats like cold cereal in milk). Thanks, Lina!

  26. MarieAnn Iwanaga

Does the rolled oats have to be cooked first? I have steel-cut oatmeal..does that have to be cooked first? Sorry I’m a newbie and would really love to try this out. We love love oatmeal in our house! Thanks in advance!

  27. aimeedeoferiotomas

I tried this method my husband feels the oats are not cook vs the instant oats I cook in microwave. Maybe I am missing something? 1/2 cup old fashion oats and 1 cup almond milk. Soak overnight in a jar.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

So the texture may not be quite as soft as warmed oatmeal from a microwave but will soften further. They are not cooked but more like soaked. I would leave them soaking longer or if someone is really set on how they love oatmeal this texture may not be as appealing. Hope that helps!

  28. K

    Thank you for this recipe!
What amount of chia seeds would you add to this portion?

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

I would try a tablespoon and see how that goes! Thanks!
