The TikTok Ban Is Getting Real – Do You Hope It Gets Booted?
The TikTok ban possibility is getting real. Here are our thoughts…
Hey, Hipsters! Have you heard the latest about TikTok? 😳
The U.S. Supreme Court just upheld a law that could ban the app starting this Sunday, January 19, 2025, unless its Chinese parent onlinepany, ByteDance, sells its American operations. This all stems from worries about national security and how our data might be accessed.
With around 170 million Americans using TikTok, this is a pretty big deal, to say the least.
President-elect Trump, who takes office on Monday, January 20th has hinted at possibly delaying the ban to weigh in on the decision. So, while TikTok might not disappear from our phones immediately, its future in the U.S. is pretty uncertain right now.
We polled our Hip team to see how they feel about the TikTok ban…
Approximately 62% of our Hip sidekicks said they’d be extremely disappointed with a TikTok ban whereas the other 29% of Hip sidekicks said they’d be excited if it got booted, and 14% are undecided.
That said, our very own Hip CEO & Founder, Collin, said she’s somewhat hopeful of a permanent TikTok ban.
“I’m genuinely relieved at the thought of a TikTok ban. It’s not just about the app—it’s about the impact it has on my daughter and so many teens out there. The endless scrolling, constant onlineparisons, and overthinking are taking a toll on their mental health and self-esteem. I see how it affects her, creating unnecessary pressure and distractions. The ban feels like an opportunity to step away from that noise, giving her a chance to focus on what really matters and reconnect with the world outside the screen.” – Collin

It’s wild to think about TikTok possibly being banned, but honestly, there’s a case to be made that less social media might not be the worst thing…
Research shows how too much screen time, especially on apps like TikTok, can mess with our mental health. Social media often feeds onlineparison, anxiety, and even depression, especially in younger users. A little forced detox might actually do us some good.
