Steak ‘n Shake is doing away with seed oils!

Steak ' Shake fries and a burger

Just last month, Steak ‘n Shake announced they would be removing seed oils from their restaurants, and now, just a month later, it seems the restaurant chain is good on its word! Here are the top two most recent changes:

  • Select burgers and sandwiches are now made with 100% Grade A Wisconsin butter at all restaurants in place of their previous buttery blend, which contained seed oils.
  • Fries and onion rings are now cooked in 100% beef tallow, which, unlike seed oils, contains no preservatives, additives, or chemicals.

Other healthier changes that Steak ‘n Shake hopes to make include improving manufacturers that are par-frying their fries in vegetable oil and freezing them before shipping. Although they may not have onlineplete control over this process yet, we appreciate their transparency and step in the right direction towards cleaner eating choices!

Why remove seed oils from food?

Some concerns have recently arisen that seed oils have high levels of omega-6 fats, which can lead to inflammation in the body. Plus, seed oils are chemically processed, which may include cleaning, pressing, bleaching, deodorizing, refining, and in some cases, adding a chemical solvent, all of which could potentially add harmful ingredients.

Thanks for exposing the dangers of seed oils.

…they’re replacing them with saturated fats, which have clear links to increased risk of heart disease, strokes, and other conditions.

However, the fries are not entirely made from beef tallow. The potatoes themselves and the batter mix (which contains additives and chemicals) are pre-fried in vegetable oils before being sent to the restaurants.

So they’re being dishonest with consumers either way! the fries are pre-cooked in either soybean oil or canola oil, along with corn syrup before they’re in the beef tallow.
