peanut butter bread with spoon

Calling all Peanut butter fans, you’ll love this frugal recipe idea!

This old, quick bread recipe is now going Reddit-viral almost 90 years later! 😱 I’m guessing since so many of us are spending our time at home baking.

The best part about the recipe is its minimal ingredient list! You’ll only need 6 onlinemon pantry staples, and no yeast or eggs.

I was so excited to try out this recipe and was thrilled when the peanut butter bread loaf turned out delicious!

According to the Glen & Friends Cooking Channel via YouTube.online, this Peanut Butter Loaf is from an old Canadian cookbook from 1932 called Five Roses Flour-A Guide to Good Cooking. What makes it so interesting is that it’s eggless and only uses peanut butter for its fat source.

You can find the recipe directly in this YouTube video description and also on reddit.online, along with a ton of variations and add-in ideas readers have onlinee up with.

mixing up peanut butter bread in a mixing bowl

Anyone cake bake this Peanut Butter Bread!

As far as the process goes, things couldn’t be easier! It’s a one-bowl batter recipe and I followed the directions as written, except for adding an extra tablespoon of peanut butter to the 1/2 cup the recipe called for, with hopes of a stronger peanut butter taste as Glen & Friends suggested.

pouring peanut butter bread batter into loaf pan

The batter gets poured into a greased loaf pan and baked for about an hour. Mine was ready pretty much right at the 60-minute mark of baking time. You’ll need to allow the loaf to cool before transferring it out of the pan.

Once cooled, you can slice and enjoy as desired!

It tastes great, and almost like a peanut butter cookie, but less sweet. The peanut butter taste is subtle and the texture is nice! Overall, this recipe was a winner for myself and my family, and I love it as a pantry staple quarantine recipe idea to bake at home!

Hip Recipe Tips:

    • I wanted to try Peanut Butter Bread as written first, but next time I’d like to maybe try adding some chocolate chips or butterscotch chips for a sweeter version!
    • I used creamy Skippy peanut butter because it’s what I had on hand and I loved the results. You could definitely use chunky peanut butter or even another nut butter if desired.
    • There are so many awesome ways you can serve Peanut Butter Bread! You could toast a slice with a little jam or jelly, spread with Nutella, top with sliced bananas, or add a drizzle of honey.

Here’s how I topped my warm bread slice:

A piece of peanut butter bread with sliced bananas and a drizzle of honey was super delicious paired with a cup of coffee for breakfast this morning. Next time I’d love to toast a piece with jelly. YUM!

Now, if I only remembered to buy baking powder when I stocked up right before quarantine! Ha! That’s the 1 thing I don’t have and can’t find.

  2. Jill

Does anyone think if I could use almond flour and stevia sugar for substitutes?

    • lateephabisidurosinmi-0

Almond nut is higher in calories so you want to be careful.

      • Jennine

Funny the almond flour is brought up. food is personal. make it with whatever you have 🙂
But Since now, we’re talking The stevia, can upset the microbial, gut lining. To each there own. It will be wonderful any way your family makes it!

      • eatketo

And full of protein. Guaranteed to keep you full longer…. therefore keeping you from consuming more empty calories later in the day. Wheat flour to almond flour calories are not apples to apples.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Yes actually search “keto peanut butter bread” and you’ll find some similar recipes and a few that omit flour altogether, or using almond flour. Hope that helps 👍

      • Jill

        Thanks

  3. Danielle

I made this last week and added chocolate morsels to half the batch. It was definitely better with the morsels. While the bread was good, I still prefer banana bread!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Awesome – thanks for sharing Danielle!

    • PrincessMom

I was just thinking I’d make some with chocolate chips 🙂 Glad to know they improve the recipe!

    • Erin

Same. The pb really doesn’t onlinee through that strongly. I just made peanut butter pancake muffins with a mix of semisweet and peanut butter morsels that were a hit with my kids.

  4. emurray

I’m totally trying this! And imagining topping it with whipped marshmallow spread…Mmmmm

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Oh yummmm!!! Great idea.

  5. Dani

Made this a couple weeks ago with a onlinebo of chocolate and butterscotch morsels and it was super yummy! Going to make again with other variations! For someone who doesn’t bake, this is a dream recipe!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh hooray! I’m so glad you enjoyed it too Dani!

  6. hip2trade

I’m guessing I could use self-rising flour? It already contains the baking soda as far as I know.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh ya that’s a good idea!

  7. Brigette

Is there a printable version somewhere? THanks!

    • Danielle

Not sure if this is the same recipe posted here, but this is the recipe I used when I made it last week. If you scroll down the the recipe there is an option to print the recipe. Hope this helps!

  8. Christina

Hello ultimate peanut butter jelly sandwiches! 🤤

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Yes!! I agree 😀

  9. Emily

This was not very peanut buttery. It was ok, but not a hit with the kids because it didn’t have a lot of flavor.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Thanks for adding your feedback Emily!

  10. TJ

Ooh I have bananas to use up. I think I’ll add those.

  11. Adorkable

Eggs are hard to find in my area so this recipe would be great to try. I miss baking.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Yes this a great eggless option!

  12. Baker's Wife

I made the first loaf with BP Fit Powder, 12 tbsp. Not a lot of pb flavor, but still good, especially lightly toasted and spread with butter. The second loaf, I made with real pb and took to my neighbors. They said they really enjoyed it. I’ll make it again.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh that’s so awesome you made it for your neighbors! Thanks for sharing ❤️

  13. cindy27_05

My neighbor brought it over and told me how he used to eat it growing up I’m the 30s and 40s. I made it and we all agreed it needed chocolate or something extra in it now. But it was good to dunk in coffee or milk. Lol

  14. Trim

How precious your peanut butter bread in the oven has a smiley face thank you

  15. Jan

I was curious about this recipe, so I made it this afternoon. I’d skip this one. It was extremely dry and flavorless. Not worth the time and materials.

  16. Ella

When I clicked on reddit to see the recipe, I started looking at some others and came across an old recipe for “mystery salad.” It consisted of jello, stewed tomatoes, and tabasco sauce with a sour cream, sugar and horseradish dressing. Yuck ! 🤣

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Wow 😳 haha!

  17. SuzyHomemakerGoneBad

I absolutely love recipes from the 1930s! My grandmothers had quite a few of them, and many of them are delicious, simple, and super cheap! They needed to be, because eggs and a lot of other supplies were too expensive or difficult to obtain during the Great Depression. Thank you for posting this!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Sure! This one is fun to make – enjoy 😉

  18. Taralee Hufstetler

Had my daughter make this yesterday for “HomeEc” class lol. It was pretty good. I do think if we made again, chocolate chips will be added.

    • Irene (Hip Sidekick)

How fun, Taralee! I’m glad your daughter was able to make this for “HomeEc” class! I agree, chocolate chips will bring this to a whole new level!

  19. shelleybeaches

This is inspiring! I want to try it with cookie butter (speculoos).

  20. Kim

No, no, no. I made it last week, and it’s actually disgusting. Maybe it’s that you expect something sweeter, but it’s so bland. I even tried the toasting with jam. No, no.

  21. ginamccutchanseaton

I tried this one. Love all of Lina’s stuff. This one was ok, it was kind of mild in the peanut butter tasting category and not that sweet at all. Mine seemed more of a biscuit type texture. I agree with adding the chocolate chips or peanut butter chips or both to add a little more flavor/texture next time.
