We Reviewed the Popular 2019 LEGO City Christmas Advent Calendar
Are you tempted to buy the new LEGO City Advent Calendar for 2019? If so, you’ll first want to read my thorough review below. Hopefully it gives you a nice idea of what you’ll be getting for $20.
On a side note, I have been reviewing various Advent Calendars over the past few weeks to help you decide which ones are worth the cost and which ones may not be. Christmas will be here soon, and it sure is fun to countdown with an Advent Calendar!
Did you see my other Advent Calendar reviews? I reviewed a Squishy Toy Advent Calendar with the kids and we did experience one problem.
I also shared another one with tons of yummy treats for brunch and one that will really spice up your holidays!
What is an advent calendar?
An Advent calendar is a special calendar used to count the days of Advent in anticipation of Christmas. Typically, each calendar has a small gift or candy to represent each day or a token to move each day as you countdown.
Here’s one of the Advent Calendars I recently tried with the kids:
2019 LEGO City Advent Calendar – $19.97
Need I say more than the word LEGO ?? If your kids love LEGOs, then they’re going to love this Advent Calendar – plain and simple! All three of my kiddos were bugging me to no end to break out this box and tear through all the baggies of Christmas surprises. 😍
However, if you’re going to scoop up one of these for your countdown to Christmas, then I feel inclined to say good luck trying to keep your kids from tearing through the whole box on Day 1 – because hello!!… it’s LEGOs and kids love ’em!
Hip Tip: If you love shopping at Kohl’s, you can score the same LEGO Advent Calendar. It’s slightly more than the price on Amazon, however, you can earn triple Yes2You points and use up some Kohl’s cash that might be burning a hole in your pocket!
As a parent, I really appreciate any Advent Calendar that’s going to encourage an excitement that doesn’t have to do with sugar or candy. During the holidays, there’s already enough treats going around that the last thing I want to do is add to it each and every day before Christmas.
Here are a few other reasons I like this LEGO Advent Calendar:
- There are 24 different LEGO surprises so there’s plenty for multiple kids to share and play with.
- All of the LEGOs are festive and create a fun holiday scene for kids to use their imagination.
- The box folds out into a fun display for kids to play on.
- There’s no candy! (Sorry kids!)
- Unlike many other calendars, these won’t end up in the trash as they can be added to any LEGO creation.
However, there were a few things about this LEGO Advent Calendar that I wasn’t so impressed with:
1. Don’t open the end of the box.
Like any LEGO box, we have a habit of opening the end, but that just opens up every single day. So while you’re not really ruining any sort of visual surprise, you are actually supposed to open the flap on the front of the box to expose the punch outs for the Advent Calendar days. Maybe this is onlinemon sense, but for us, it wasn’t! 😂
2. There are no instructions!
Yes, you read that right. There are no instructions that onlinee with this box! Not anywhere – which is a bit disappointing because I don’t have enough of an imagination to figure out how to put together LEGO without a step by step tutorial. HAHA! That said, my older two kids had enough experience to figure it out.
3. The box is cheap and thin.
Although this Advent Calendar isn’t that expensive, I still felt that the box was a little cheap. This thing has to last for the whole month of December with tiny kid’s hands ripping through it every day, so I wish it was a little more durable. Plus, they have a Christmas scene that the kids are supposed to play on and I don’t foresee it lasting very long.
My verdict:
“Although there are a couple of things we would change, such as the lack of instructions and the cheap box, this is still a winner in our book! WE LOVE LEGOS! And the kids had such a blast taking out all the LEGOs and figuring out how to put them together.
And besides – what kid wouldn’t want new LEGOs every day for a whole entire month?! LOL! We’d totally buy this Advent Calendar again and are already looking forward to next year’s calendar!”
