knife organizer drawer kitchen hack

Do you hate cluttered kitchen counters?

I have an incredibly simple solution for that old, bulky knife block taking up valuable retail space! And the best part? It will take you less than a minute to do! A budget-friendly solution that’s quick and easy? Now, that’s a win-win-win!

*Note that the knife organizer I have (as pictured above) was purchased from Target (available in select stores only), however, I did find an identical one on Amazon that I’m sharing as it’s available online.

Here’s the highly-rated nearly identical organizer I found on Amazon:

I love to cook and enjoy my kitchen with clean and decluttered counter spaces. My old kitchen had so much clutter between the Keurig, bulky knife block (which I hated), the double toaster, my Alexa, and other random things that found their way onto the counter.

While browsing through Target one day, I happened to see this unique-shaped bamboo thing in the kitchen aisle. And onlinee to find out, it was my ticket to a more organized kitchen!

measuring the width of the drawer

Like many things we buy at Walmart or Target, I never planned to go home with this amazing invention 😏 But then again… I’m not the best at avoiding the money-spending black hole, sooo I had to guess on how many organizers would fit our new drawers. Lucky for me, I guessed right (which never happens, friends)!

Hip Tip: Before you go shopping, make sure to measure your drawers and count how many knife organizers you’ll need to aconlinemodate the space.

adding knife organizers to the drawer, one at a time

Next, just place the knife block inside your drawer – it’s really that simple! There’s no cutting, no assembly, nothing! You just take it out of the packaging and you’re ready to add your knives!

I found that the bottom slots are perfect for placing medium to large knives and cheese knives since they tend to have a taller profile. The slots near the top are great for all your steak knives and paring knives.

Look at how beautiful and minimal the onlinepleted drawer looks! 😍 We’ve had ours for over three years, and they still look brand new. They’re scratch-free and just as beautiful as the day I bought them!

I even love that I can have my knives right next to my cooking range while I’m making meals. 🙌 Plus, I don’t feel like I had to sacrifice on the functionality or the ease of accessing a knife when I need it.

Voila!

And there you have it, folks! A cleaner, clutter-free countertop in under a minute! Now if only I could find a tile backsplash that would be that easy… 😏

I would love to do this but I have much more counter space than I do drawer availability

    • Mia

      Same here!

    • Jennine

My first thought was “if you have a kitchen large enough to do this!” 🙂

      • Tonia M

Exactly! I’m forever hopeful that one day I will!

    • Holly

      Right!

  2. AngieSue

    Very cool! Thanks for sharing

  3. Patty d

I love it. Going to measure our new drawers and go shopping

  4. Mary

Just a quick tip – this is not ideal if you have small children unless you add a lick to the drawer. This puts the sharp knives much closer to children’s reach.

    • Mary

      ***oops. LOCK

    • Rachel F.

      Agreed. This terrifies me. Ha

      • M

Good point. We had the drawer locks when my daughter was a baby/toddler. She never bothered the drawers though just the Tupperware cabinet but it is better safe then sorry. I might do this and add the drawer locks for our baby on the way.

      • candace

No go for me. 2.5 year old on the spectrum and it’ll be awhile b4 thats safe.

  5. Kristin Humphries

    Would love to but…. toddlers

    • M

As pointed out a clever toddler can get to the counter just as easily. With drawer locks I think this is an excellent idea.

  6. Elle

This is awesome! Thanks!! I have all my knives in a drawer (w baby lock cuz I have toddlers) and wanted a way to organize and make it safer when I reach in the drawer. I hate knives on counters. I don’t have the space and I like that out of sight out of mind cuz my kids could definitely get to the counter easier than locked drawer. Thanks!!

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

You’re so welonlinee, Elle! Thanks a bunch for taking a moment to onlinement!

  7. Crystal

This looks way bigger than my bulky knife block

  8. a

This looks interesting. I hate knife blocks. I just have them in the drawer in a utensil organizer just like the forks and spoons.

  9. Cassandane

We have small children, so opted for a smaller knife block and a magnetic knife strip from IKEA (mounted to the side of a cabinet). Smaller footprint and much safer!

  10. nita

I just put the larger heavy duty knives away on a higher shelf, since they’re not used as much anyway, and the few smaller everyday knives in a little utensil holder next to forks n spoons. Keeps it simple. Butcher blocks are good if you have that extra space..

  11. Steph

I got the Joseph one recently and love it.

But when my kids were younger, I too was hesitant to keep them in a drawer. Instead of a knife block, I used a round utensil holder (like what you would put your spatulas in) on the countertop. We kept the knives sharp side down and it was nicer looking, smaller and easier to hide on the counters than the giant knife block. We didn’t have any real expensive knives so we weren’t worried about dulling, tip damage, etc. They lasted like that for 8 years.

Now that my kids are older, I just bought myself brand new knives and they are in the drawer organized like this post. Nice to have options like this for when the time is right.

  12. Betsy

My favorite way to store knives is a magnetic strip mounted on the side of one of our upper cabinets- near the sink. It’s super easy to grab the correct knife and takes no space. High enough for littles to not grab, though my kids are older now. A chef friend reonlinemended this and I swear by this way of knife storage!

  13. karwowm

With both limited counter top and cabinet space, I use a two sided knife holder mounted under the cabinet. It’s out of reach for little hands but easily accessible right next to the cutting boards. Those I store in a holder mounted to the side of the same cabinet.

  14. Sue

I really like that idea. Great way to store knives and safe.

  15. Amy F;)

I “needed” one of these a few years ago when I was trying to organize and streamline my kitchen, so my husband trimmed and glued some leftover pieces of wood together to make a custom one for a our very small, next to stove drawer…for free!

  16. Anita

    Hey,
Y’all do a great job-love your site. I have a request-when you say things like,”throw out your knife block”, it would be good to remind readers to throw them to a place where they can be used-not just the landfill. Every city , or nearby, has places where things can be donated. Don’t assume since you don’t need/want things any more, or think they are garbage, that they are not useful to someone.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Great suggestion, Anita! Thanks for the request! I’ll be sure to pass this along to the team! I do love to donate items I’m done using that might still be of use to others. 😊

  17. MICHELLE

Same one is 14.96 at Amazon. But thanks for the idea! I;m getting one.

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

      Thanks! I added that.
