Grow your own food and save 💰!

Growing your own veggies has many health and financial benefits. For starters, you know exactly what chemicals are (or aren’t) going into your food, and you don’t have to spend money on fresh produce from the grocery store.

This week, we have a reader who is sharing how she was able to grow her own green onions and keep the supply onlineing at almost no cost!

Check out her story…

Green onion roots next to ruler

I have found a no-cost way to have a never-ending supply of green onions! The next time you purchase a bunch of green onions from the grocery store, save the last 1/2 ” of the onion along with the roots.

Plant it in either the ground in a garden or a medium-sized flower pot, just covering the roots but leaving the 1/2″ of onion above ground. In no time at all, they will send up more green shoots and you can start cutting a few off at a time to use in salads or other recipes!

I have had mine now for 3 years and they have survived our pretty cold winters here in North Texas.

Thanks! I’m going to try this! My green onions always wilt before I can use them all and this will be perfect for me!!

  4. Lovely511

The same for celery, Romaine lettuce and potatoes.

    • Carrie

Thank you! I use celery often would love to try this

  5. Nee

Thanks for this detailed post! I did it in water last year and I didn’t like the quality as much. I’ll try this method!

    • Tran

I felt the same! Growing in a cup of water, the flavor was totally lacking. But after we planted them in the soil, the flavor is as expected!

  6. Evie

It is true, the quality may not be as good for celery and lettuce, but your smoothie will not know the difference! Free is good!
Watch the stores, sneak in price increases.
I bought organic carrots last week at Lidls for .79. This week they were $2.00. They do not mark things like they should at Lidls.
Guess I am paying that tax, even though I make less than $400,000 a year.
