Oh, Amazon – say it ain’t so! 😭

The price to purchase a new Amazon Prime Yearly Membership has officially been increased from $119 to $139 per year. Existing members will see the increase reflected in their renewal price starting March 25th.

Apparently, the trend has been for the rates to increase every four years as we saw the last $20 increase – from $99 to $119 – back in 2018, and prior to that, the price for an Amazon Prime membership jumped from $79 to $99 back in 2014.

Monthly memberships have also been affected with a $2 increase in price from $12.99 to $14.99. There was also a jump in the discounted Amazon Prime membership programs for Students (now $7.49 from $6.49). Recipients of EBT benefits or government assistance had a small increase as well to the new discounted monthly price of $6.99.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first price increase that’s happened recently (and sadly probably won’t be the last). Starbucks, IKEA, and even Dollar Tree have all announced that they are raising prices – but the price increase for an Amazon Prime membership is the one we think we’ll notice the most.

Considering breaking up with Prime over the latest price increase? Don’t forget about all these great benefits!

What are some Amazon perks that justify this price?

The biggest thing we’ve always loved about Prime is its convenience. They offer FREE two-day shipping, and in many cases one-day shipping, on millions of items. You also get no-rush shipping credits, and sometimes, they even offer credit on certain items you purchase.

There’s also the entertainment portion we know and love. You get thousands of shows and movies with Prime Video, and you have access to millions of songs with Prime Music. For bookworms, Amazon also gives access to thousands of FREE Kindle eBooks. Even if you don’t have a Kindle, you can still access these perks through the Kindle app.

Did you know Amazon also gives you free unlimited cloud photo storage? That’s something we all could use more of!

Amazon Pharmacy has been another underrated lifesaver Amazon gives its Prime members. In addition to having the option to directly mail your prescriptions to your house at your convenience, the Prime Rx Card is the real kicker! If you don’t have insurance, show this to your pharmacist and you can get up to 80% off your medication.

Even if you do have insurance like myself, I’ve seen better rates with an Rx Card than I have with my own insurance! We have a full product review on this if you want to dive deeper.

Will this work on student prime? Has anyone tried? Thanks in advance. 🌸

  2. Sarah

I read on another site from people who have tried this before: they had multiple people on their account and they all got kicked off; all of their orders, watch history, etc. Another person bought the gift sub and tried to extend it and it just turned into a gift card. So now they just have a $119 gift card sitting in their acct.

Maybe it’s a fluke or they didn’t redeem them right, but I would have a step by step tutorial with customer service on how to redeem it correctly.

Thanks for this, but I have decided that I have had enough of Amazon. Almost everything is from China and falls apart and for the past 2 years they have not been good at getting my stuff to me in 2 days. I consider myself lucky if I get my things in 4 days. I think that it is terrible that they keep raising the rates on us so I’m done with them.

  4. Adam

While locking in a price is great for the time you will for sure be using it (so the 1st year of the savings), but the incentive to save $20 for the future 2nd year, doesn’t seem like a wise investment.

Thanks for the tips on keeping it as inexpensive for as long as possible

  5. Celeste

I can not find the spot that allows me to cancel the auto renew. How do I find that tab?

  6. tammie

Does anyone know if you can share yearly memberships with other family members in your household? I have a prime subscription I pay yearly and my husband pays the monthly fee…I feel like that is a waste of money if we can share a membership but not certain if this is possible.

    • Nancy

We share a membership on my account

  7. Christie

It says I can’t do it because I’m already a Prime Member?

  8. silvgoddess

When purchasing and scheduling a delivery date for the gift subscription, will I be able to activate it whenever I would like after delivery? It will only let me send the email within a year’s time but I would like to get two gift subscriptions to be used over two years. Also, do you know what happens to my amazon photos? I think I have over the non-Prime limit and I don’t want to lose them if I am applying a gift subscription the day my plan expires.

  9. Maja

My gift membership costs $139, not $119.

    • Brenda Acord

Mine does too, maybe they caught on to what everyone was doing and increased it early.

    • JenM

Same. I think they nipped this in the bud. Darn. 🙁

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks a bunch for onlinementing! We’re seeing that now as well. We’ll be sure to get these post details updated!

  10. Sue

I tried today and the fee is already $139

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks, Sue! 💖We’re working on getting these details updated!

  11. Thriftypuppy

I think I’m done with Prime when I get to my renewal. Just not worth it – you’re really paying for convenience as their prices aren’t as great as they used to be. I’d rather support local businesses.

  12. Shelley

I came back looking for the instructions for how to turn off auto-renewal on Amazon Prime, but they are not here anymore. Can you please put the instructions back up? I tried going into my prime account, but I can’t find a way to turn off auto renew. Thank you.

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

      Hi, Shelley!

Go to your Prime Account page and click on Membership. Once there, you’ll see “manage membership” – click on it and select’Cancel Membership’. Don’t worry, this will just turn it off on a specific date.
Make sure you pass the “Are you sure you want to cancel” messages and eventually you’ll get to a cancellation confirmation screen. At this screen, you’ll have 3 options and you’ll want to select “End on specific date”. Choose the end of your membership. Then write on your calendar when it expires and go back the day after to use your gift membership. You won’t lose your order history doing this.

  13. nancysanti

I got your membership on February to renewal set for May 3 2022. Didn’t work the ask for the increase price. So they added the difference to my CC 😐

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

SO sorry for any confusion. Were you automatically charged or did you speak with customer service on this?

  14. Heather

So, I bought the gift membership back in Feb. and I don’t know where it is in my account. Can you tell me what to do please?

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Hey Heather! Maybe check back through your order history to see if you can find it listed there. If still having troubles, be sure to reach out to customer service. Hoping this helps! 💞
