Eggs are a staple at my house. My family loves to eat hardboiled eggs as a quick breakfast, or sliced up in salads. This is why my weekly meal prep consists of making sure we have some on hand for the week. It’s the perfect protein-packed healthy snack or meal.
Here’s my favorite tried and true method for eggs!
Knowing exactly how long to boil eggs can get a little tricky to get the perfectly cooked golden yoke. To get perfectly cooked yolks, bring the eggs to a boil, then turn off the heat. Let them sit in the water, with the lid on, for 12 minutes for large eggs or 14 minutes for extra-large eggs.
Want a cool hack for easy-to-peel eggs? Try adding baking soda to your pot of water!
This makes eggs much easier to peel! I tried it for the first time and was surprised how well it worked—the shells came off in big chunks. If you want to make peeling eggs easier, try adding baking soda next time!
Some readers have also said that adding salt to the water will also work for easier peeling.

There's no way to under or overcook hard boiled eggs with this recipe tip!
Ingredients
- Water
- 6 eggs
- 1 teaspoon baking soda (optional but helpful!)
Directions
1
Use a pot that's large enough to lay one layer of eggs on the bottom. Make sure to gently lay the eggs in the pot to avoid cracks in your eggs. Fill pot with enough cool water to just cover eggs (about 1 to 1.5 inches high).
2
Add in 1 teaspoon baking soda to make eggs easier to peel. Turn the stove to medium-high heat until the water starts to boil.
3
Cover pot with a lid, take it off the heat, and let eggs stand with the lid on for about 14 minutes for extra large eggs, 12 minutes for large, and 10 minutes for medium-sized eggs.
4
Place eggs in a bowl of cool water (Tip: Use tongs to transfer eggs to bowl). Once cool, refrigerate eggs for up to a week.
Tips for making perfect hard-boiled eggs:
- Prefer to use the air fryer for hard-boiled eggs? Try cooking in the air fryer for 16 minutes at 260 degrees. Once the cook time is finished, transfer the cooked eggs to a iced water bath.
- Per the USDA, hard-boiled eggs can be stored in the fridge for up to 7 days, either left in their shells or peeled.
- Do you love my handy egg trivet? It keeps the eggs from moving around.
- Save your eggshells for your garden! They provide a natural source of calcium, which helps strengthen plant cell walls
I like using this method because it helps avoid the green-tinted yolks that sometimes result from overcooking. There is nothing better than a perfectly cooked hard-boiled egg with a little everything bagel seasoning on it! We also love deviled eggs and egg salad sandwiches too.
