Yummy! This sounds delicious. I’m definitely going to try this. Thanks, Lina!

  2. MiPaLady

Sounds yummy BUT the 1.5 Tablespoon of sugar is too much unless your planning this to be a dessert. I’ll broil mine without or a dusting which might be 1/4 teaspoon of brown sugar. Careful with the sugar folks!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Sure, just use as an idea and i think honey would be awesome too!

    • jlgclassof2000

Really cuz for me i was thinking i might need to do 3 tbsp cuZ i really dont care for grapefruit cuz of how bitter it is. With enough sugar though…maybe it will no longer be the only fruit i dont like =)

  3. Bunny

When I was a kid, my Dad would section the grapefruit for everyone and put a maraschino cherry in the middle with some juice on the top. I still do that to this day. Makes me think of him every time 🙂

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Yum. 🙂

  4. Katie

My mom likes to eat it cold with regular sugar sprinkled on top. I on the other hand can not stand this stuff:)

  5. Pharmchick

Off topic but do you have any good sweet potato recipes? I bought a huge box of them and now don’t know what to do other then bake it! And it’s too sweet for my family to eat lol.

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

My family likes just simple sweet potato fries and all i do is cut fresh sweet potatoes lengthwise, mix with a little olive oil, and sprinkle with cajun seasoning and maybe a little salt and pepper. Then bake until tender or desired crispness. Yum!

    • lj

sweet potato souffle!! (sp?) Not the stuff with marshmellows! Basically, it tastes like pumpkin pie on the bottom with crunchy, brown sugar topping. Definitely a dessert! Also, if you’re from the south ;), Sweet Potato Pie. (Pretty much the same as pumpkin pie)

    • Brenda

I peel it cut it in cubes. Marinade them in olive oil with cinnamon and then put it on a oven tray. 30 min on 400 and you have a great side dish.

    • B bitter

Bake them and then use them like pumpkin in bread or muffin recipes

  6. Whitney

I have done something similar before with an orange. It’s delicious! I used honey and cinnamon but I love the idea of putting ginger! Thanks for sharing, Lina 🙂

  7. Catie

Love the idea of an orange too! I have lots of grapefruit and oranges to eat!! Yummy!

  8. adriana

My son and I love these. But the way we sometimes eat them is to put ground cinnamon and walnuts on them. No sugar or other junk, then bake for a little =)

  9. Ruthie

For years, I have sprinkled very little sugar or Splenda (for the diabetic members of the family) and broiled—-great. I have also used honey. I love the idea of ginger and cinnamon so will be trying this very soon. THANKS SO MUCH FOR A NEW IDEA.

  10. visitor3

I had this (or something very similar) at a Bobby Flay restaurant in NYC. I think it was about $6! Very good and easy to make at home. Impressive brunch treat.

  11. Meredith

I was so excited to try this, but holy moly it’s waaaay too much cinnamon! Is that a typo? My son and I had to scrape most of the topping off just to make this edible.

    • Kris

I also made this and had a similar experience – so I checked the recipe that this was adapted from and you can see there is a big difference in the measurements.

Measurements from the original recipe from which this was adapted:
2 TBSP lightly packed light brown muscovado sugar
      1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
      1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
1 large pink grapefruit, halved and segmented

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Apologizing! Fixed & I need new glasses, sorry.

  12. jennifer

This looks so good! I am trying to be a little healthier so I may try your honey idea, Lina. Or maybe maple syrup. Also on the sweet potatoes, I saw on biggest loser where your put anything you put on a regular baked potato on a sweet potato. I tried it with greek yogurt(sour cream), a few scallions, salt, pepper,a little cheese and it really was good! Seems like it wouldn’t work but somehow it did.

I was the guest of a family friend for a week when I was in college. She prepared for me a broiled grapefruit with crushed & melted peppermint candy on top. I had never had such a thing before (or since), and your blog post brought back some nice memories! It was quite yummy.
