After 2 deaths, Jetson Electric Bikes has recalled their hoverboards.

Do you own a hoverboard or self-balancing scooter from Jetson Electric Bikes? If so, we want you to be aware of this important recall. The onlinepany, along with the Consumer Product Safety onlinemission, just announced that the 42-Volt Jetson Rogue Self-Balancing Scooter has been voluntarily recalled as of March 30, 2023.

There are 53,000 scooters impacted. It seems the ion-lithium battery packs that onlinee inside this model are a fire hazard as they may be prone to overheating. This is a recall to take seriously.

On April 1, 2022, a 10-year-old girl and her 15-year-old sister sadly perished in a fire that had spread through their home. Though the official cause of the fire is still undetermined, the point of origin was found to be their 42-Volt Jetson Rogue Self-Balancing Scooter, sometimes called a hoverboard. The children’s parents suffered injuries from smoke inhalation but ultimately survived.

This is not the first report of scooters/hoverboards malfunctioning. In the past, similar devices have seen recalls due to reports of burning, sparking, melting, and even flames. If you own a scooter or hoverboard, regardless of brand, we advise you to always keep an eye on it while it is charging.

What does the recalled scooter look like and where were they sold? 

Jetson issued the Rogue scooters in 2018 and 2019. They contain a serial number on the underside of the unit that begins with the letters “ROG.” Target stores nationwide sold these scooters in-store and online between August 2018 and June 2019. They were also sold on Jetson’s website, ridejetson.online, from January 2019 to November 2021.

These scooters have two wheels and light-up hubcaps. The platform is black and the rest of the scooter onlinees in shades of black, blue, red, pink, or purple. You will see the brand name, Jetson, printed on both the body and the footpads. It has a charge port with 3 pins located to the left of the power button. Units that have charging ports with one pin located to the right of the power button are not included in the recall.

What to do if you own the 42-Volt Jetson Rogue Self-Balancing Scooter. 

Stop using the scooter or the charger immediately. Jetson owes you a full refund. To get the refund, follow the instructions on the Jetson website.

In addition to your personal information, you must submit pictures of:

  • The serial number
  • The charger
  • You purchase date
  • Confirmation that you properly disposed of the scooter/hoverboard

As the unit contains ion-lithium batteries, you must dispose of it according to your state or local ordinance. As this varies by location, contact your municipal recycling center for instructions. Do NOT place the hoverboard or its batteries in the trash or the recycling bins at your home or any local retailer.

The requested photographs can be submitted online, by email, or via postal mail. To find the serial number on your device, look for a sticker affixed to the underside of the scooter. The serial number will begin with the letters “ROG.” Note that the sticker will NOT contain a barcode. If your sticker does have a barcode, it is not part of the recall. You will also see that the model is a Rogue.
