What was the class action lawsuit about?
The settlement stems from a class action lawsuit from December 2017. This lawsuit claimed that certain iOS 10 upgrades diminished the performance of iPhones with older, low-capacity batteries. These phones were used prior to December 21, 2017. Models include the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone SE. It also impacted iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus which ran on iOS 11.2 or later.
Many customers onlineplained that the reduced performance prompted them to upgrade their phones when they could have received a more affordable battery replacement instead. Apple claimed that the slowdown was to prevent these lithium-ion batteries from shutting down once the battery degrades. Though Apple claims to have done no wrongdoing, the onlinepany did agree to a settlement.
In order to receive a portion of the settlement, you had to file a claim by October 6, 2020.
