Michaels is hosting Kids Birthday Parties in 2024. Would you pay for one?

The popular craft store, Michaels, now hosts children’s birthday parties for kids ages 4 to 13, but are they a good deal?

The party packages starts at $299 and includes a two-hour party for up to 8 guests. Up to 4 additional guests may join for $30 a person.

For the cost, Michaels provides a themed invite plus all the supplies needed for three different kid-friendly projects. One project is a wearable item, one is a sensory item, and one is a special “hero” project. The store also appoints a “party captain” to host the event and handle the set-up and clean-up.

Unfortunately, food is not included. Parents are welonlinee to bring their food, drinks, and decorations. They may add Domino’s pizza, beverages, balloons, and goodie bags for an additional cost. Michaels will supply all the plates, cups, and utensils needed.

Parents must be at the event at all times, help pass out items, serve food, and ensure guests’ parents sign the contact form and participation waiver. In exchange, parents can skip cleaning their house, planning the party, buying supplies, and leading activities.

Nope. Definitely not if I still have supply food and cake, drinks etc. I can do a party for my son for under $75 with decorations, Domino’s and cake and tell them to go on the trampoline and they are entertained for hours 😂

We used to do arts & crafts parties- things like snow globes and decorating tee shirts and wood boxes. I think this is too expensive especially with no food! Tie dye is messy, but you can do it outside on big plastic tablecloths with a kit or two. The tee shirts can be bought cheaply.

I had a party at a craft store for daughter. We provided food and drinks. The party was led by an employee with free room rental. We just had to pay for the craft supplies from their store.

That’s too much for a craft party, IMO. I live in a high COL area and most people tend to have parties at venues like this. We did Chuck E Cheese and it was almost $600 for 2-hours of unlimited play time and included pizza, wings, and drinks. We brought our own cheap Costco cake. We had about 15 kids plus parents. That was more than I wanted to spend, but it was less than most other venues here, and it was awesome to just show up and have no set-up/clean-up. The kids had a BLAST and earned tickets, too. I like home/park parties, but sometimes it’s nice to pay for the convenience.

We had a birthday party there for my daughter when she was in 2nd grade! But…she’s 25 now and things were WAY cheaper then. I don’t think it was much over $100, and I know we had at least 15 kids there. It really was a nice party. The girls could pick from several crafts to make, and I remember everyone having fun. I was EXTREMELY pregnant at the time, and never would have tackled that at home.

We also did a party there when my now 10-year old was I think 5-years old, so not that long ago. There were two options: use the room and we buy all supplies there ourselves and run the party, or get a party leader to do projects with the kids. Both options were cheaper and included way more children. We did the one with the leader. BUT it was not done well. The projects were pretty lame and the leader was not great at leading. I was not impressed BUT the kids had a good time and the party was not in my house (I never use my house). My daughter still has one of the projects she made there… I wouldn’t do it for $299 for only 8 kids and I’m usually willing to spend on birthday parties if it means I don’t have to use my home or prep.

I think I paid about that much for a Chuck-E-Cheese party less than 2 years ago which included whatever games the kids wanted to go off and play.

My kids are 16 and 14, and when they were little, I would spend $100-$150 to have a party for them at a local place. Granted, I live in MT where things might cost a little less. But to pay twice or more what I paid 5-10 years ago for something seems insane! My wages definitely haven’t doubled!

I think it’s a very interesting idea. I would probably have my daughter have her party here but not at the price since that is too expensive especially without food and limited number of kids too.

I was a Classroom Coordinator for Michael’s in 2001-2004. We did birthday parties back then. We did not charge for renting the room and we charged based on the craft, usually no more than $10/child (max of 10 kids). I would walk around with the parents and we would pick a craft together. I was responsible for set up, teaching the craft, and clean up. They were responsible for food and cake.

At the location nearest me, you can’t even get an employee to help you while shopping (understaffing, they claim). The folks at the register barely grunt your total at you. So my opinion may be based solely on my experiences at my location. But, I would be irate if I spent hundreds of dollars on a birthday party only to arrive and not have anyone to lead the party. Or someone to lead the party that didn’t know how to engage the children, etc. Other places where children’s parties are held are set up to actually engage the children and ensure they have fun. The employees are trained for that type of thing and are expected to deliver. The concept of a crafting party is a great one. Personally…I would wait until Hobby Lobby starts offering the same. At least in my area….

No. That is absolutely too expensive, especially since no food is included. It would be much to buy craft supplies and have the party at home.

Absolutely not. We had a party there in (I think) 2019, and the cost was SIGNIFICANTLY less. I want to say I paid $125 total, which included the optional staff member to help assist with crafts. You were able to choose the age range, theme, and whether the party was for a boy or a girl, and the price included 3 different crafts (they provided all supplies), the room, and a party host to instruct the crafts. I brought food and cupcakes, along with decorations. For me at that time, the price was worth it. But $300? No. Just….no. Unless they’ve changed the quality of the crafts, the quality of the “party room” (it was terribly small and dingy), and the quality of the employee they provide to help you, it’s not worth it. You’re better off buying some craft kits from Oriental Trading and doing it yourself.

I probably would. It really depends on what the crafts are. For three crafts, if they are of decent quality, then it might be worth it. I personally don’t have the desire to plan or host a party in my home, so convenience is a big factor that I’m willing to pay for. I held one of my daughter’s birthdays at As You Wish pottery painting and it was more than this. Was for the same amount of time and didn’t include food or drinks or party supplies either, I brought my own. The girls had a blast, so I could see this being similar.

For $299 not having to deal with planning, set up, clean up, picking invites…I’d do it. Sure you might be able to do it cheaper yourself, but that’s the trade off for convenience people!
