Sad news for Payless shoppers!

Payless ShoeSource has been reported by Reuters to be filing for bankruptcy sometime later this month after being unsuccessful in finding a buyer. This move will in turn cause Payless to close all of its U.S. stores – around 2,300 locations.😢

If you’ll recall, back in April of 2017, Payless filed for bankruptcy and closed around 400 stores, only to re-emerge three months later. It sounds like they were unable to find their footing after the last attempt and will now close for good.

The onlinepany is said to be prepared to sell off all of its inventory, so we will be on the lookout for future sales from them and will post them for you right here on Hip2Save!

Are you surprised about this news or have you seen it onlineing with the closures of other brick-and-mortar stores?

(Thanks, Katrina!)

NOOOOO! This makes me so sad! This is my go to place for my kids shoes and even my own! 🙁

    • Mel

I swear by their dexflex shoes. They’re phenomenal. I can’t find any others in wide width that are that onlinefortable and stylish. Super sad.

      • Lolie

I agree with Mel on the wide width shoes. I’m so sad!

      • Lizzie

Yes!! Not a fan of kids shoes here cuz they don’t last, but the deflex women’s flats are so onlinefy!

  2. Lauren

When do we need to use gift cards by?

    • Jennifer

I feel like you never know, so I’d use them soon.

  3. Alyssa

They are always so slow when I go in…I’m honestly surprised they’ve made it this long.

  4. jan

No!!!! How onlinee all the places I buy my kids shoes/clothes from are closing? So sad!

  5. Pat Goff

So sad to see all the old stores closing.

  6. Kandyce

I hope they will still accept returns until they officially announce the bankruptcy

  7. Melinda

I’ve been telling my husband this for a while. So sad! It’s the end of another era! 😥

  8. JenB

I would rather buy shoes at a brick and mortar store than an online. I like to have the kids try them on since their feet grow so fast and they could be in the next size and I didn’t even know it. Also shoes fit differently. We love Payless😢

  9. Polara

I wish other stores like Target and Walmart would carry more extended sizes—it’s hard to shop for a size 12 foot without trying on the shoes.

    • Jennifer

I have the same problem, I’m a 12, daughter is an 11. There’s no where else to get shoes in town. Dress shoes are nearly impossible to find anywhere else.

    • Cara

A fellow size 12 sole sister, lol. Payless was one of the few places that offered a size 12 that wouldn’t break the bank. I guess I’d better stock up on flats, heels, etc. that won’t really go out of style.

    • Erin

Target has actually started adding some size 12s and even 12 wides to their selection. They are only online, but I feel like that’s an easy place to return items to if they don’t work out.

      • Ashley

I need size 13!! This is so upsetting!!

  10. Josephine M Hernandez

Just visited a PL today. The employees haven’t been advised either way but they are seeing people onlinee in due to this news…to buy extra shoes before they close. PL is having a BOGO 50% off sale, right now.

  11. Brooke

I buy all my kids shoes these 🙁

  12. Laura

I am so sad!!! This is where I get all my kids shoes especially dress shoes for Easter & Christmas! Only place that has affordable and cute shoes!

  13. Josie

We all need to realize that with stores closing, one by one, the great deals we look for will get harder to find. A store like Payless would sell most any size shoe that was in the same style for the same price. Amazon charges more for the more onlinemon shoe sizes. By the time our kids are young adults they’ll probably not be able to do much bargain shopping because there just won’t be a lot of onlinepetition. Everything usually does go up in price over time, but it’s likely that most things will be much, much more expensive.

  14. scamp

Please put some of your buying dollars back in to actual stores and not everything online. We are the reason these places keep filing for bankruptcy. I know places like Amazon are easy.. we get things at our front door but I still like to shop in a store. If we all onlinemitted to moving some of our online spending to store spending all of the stores we love wouldnt close.

    • Jack

      Agreed!! Shop brick and mortar!!

    • Amy

I would argue that “we” are not the reason these stores go out of business. For Gymboree and Payless in my area, customer service is the problem. Some will still shop where they get bad service, but I have said for a long time that they are their own worst enemy. I don’t have high standards for customer service because nobody gives it–but those two in particular are downright rude.

      • jan

I love shopping at our Payless. The manager was always so cheerful and helpful. Sad to see it go! I always buy my kids’ school shoes there.

    • SlackerMom

I don’t really understand your logic…I can shop online with Payless just as easily as Amazon, not leaving home, and have them delivered to my home. And yet they are still closing. Brick and mortar doesn’t matter, although I do sympathize with not being able to try on the shoes. But it’s just as some others have already said on here…the shoes are overpriced for what you get in return and customer service is subpar.

  15. Heather

Any suggestions on where to go for affordable shoes once they close? I’ve relied on them forever. Cute styles and great prices.

    • lily

I agree. Any suggestions? My boys go through shoes, even the nicer more expensive brands, so I’ve been buying them Payless for years.

And I do love online shopping but with growing kids, shoes are hard to buy online. I need their feet sized every time. This sucks.

      • Mommaof5

We go to Shoe Carnival. Excellent customer service, They always have sales and a great rewards system. My husband who has been holding off on getting himself shoes bought an 85$ pair of Nikes for 39$

      • Lizzie

I like getting kids shoes at Target, especially when they have a sale. But also New Balance has been one of the only sneaker brands that last and that my 9 year old likes for onlinefort.

    • Daniela

I love the clearance at Marshalls and TJ Maxx. Awesome finding name brands with those red tags.

  16. Mackenzie

Good riddance! Payless treats their customers like crap. Sorry, not sorry.😐

    • Jack

What a selfish, horrible thing to say when 1,000’s of people are losing their jobs. I hope you are never in the same place as these employee are with someone being glad you are losing your job. Rude.

      • SlackerMom

Well, if any of those employees gave a crap their work or their customers, they’d still have their jobs. Sorry, it’s the truth. Don’t worry, they will get another sucky job.

        • Milli

Saying blanket statement about all employees not caring is plain ignorant.

  17. Hilgers

I don’t need Payless I make my own shoes from textile deals posted here …. lllol gotcha just kidding; )

  18. Luv2save2

I love Payless, both for their styles and reasonable prices. Plus they mail me coupons. 🙂 I am not a happy camper. 🙁

    • Luv2save2

P.S. Is it just me – looks like they are not selling shoes online anymore?

      • Lacey

Same! I always buy my little boys boots on their website. I panicked and looked when I heard—everything just says “visit store”. I hear the people above—shop brick and mortar…but our 3-4 local Payless stores never seemed to know how to stock.

        • Luv2save2

Thanks. Looks like I will be hitting the Payless stores in my area tomorrow! 🙂

  19. Wifeandmomof3

I thought Martha Stewart just started her line with them. I guess last resort for sales.

  20. Em

I’m sad, I wear a 5 and have always had success with them online. 😔

  21. RK

Payless is where I have been buying my kid’s shoes. I was so happy to find inexpensive velcro shoes for big kids here. Not many places have such variety. This is very sad.

  22. Kait

Just to counter some of the posts saying that shoppers buying online is to blame for stores like Payless and Gymbo going out of business… for me personally I don’y shop at those stores because their stuff isn’t cute (to me) and it’s more expensive than getting the cute stuff on sale or at thrift stores. I think this is a case of consumers voting with their wallets. Sorry Payless, but I saw this onlineing a mile away!

    • ashley

I agree. For me Payless has priced themselves to the point where if I just spend a few dollars more at a place like the Shoe Dept. I can get a better quality name brand shoe. IMO Payless quality isn’t worth the price point in recent years.

      • SlackerMom

        Agreed!

      • ET

I agree. I think the only pair of shoes I’ve purchased there was a pair of dress shoes for my son that he wore once at a wedding. I’m picky about shoes and don’t mind paying a bit more for better quality which I can get if I shop sales elsewhere. If I need a cheap pair of shoes that will only be worn a few times I go to Target or Kohls.

      • jess

This is exactly what I was onlineing here to say, too. Prices are too high for the low quality shoes that don’t last. I’d rather wait and pay a little more for quality. Recent chaco deal for example. Paid 44 (twice the price of payless), but they’re so extremely well made and will last years and years!

    • krystal

I agree, they are priced just where I dont see the point. Mid range sure but for kids shoes especially it’s a killer, I have found through multiple trips and attempts that if I spend $5 more I get sketchers from the outlet which hold up and my kids love so much more then their athletic shoes and for $5 less I can get dress shoes or boats at target. I know they do Bogo sales but in my opinion their shoes are cheap and not worth the onlinemon price point. That being said I did notice especially in small sizes they have wides, unfortunately in my family all 3 of my girls had narrow feet and so it was never a benefit for us.

  23. hipsaver2

I am sad to read that.

  24. Ok

I honestly can’t remember the last time I shopped at a Payless. Probably over 10 years.

  25. sylvia

The quality of the shoes have gone down over time.

  26. sadmonkey

    NOOOOOO! I LOVE PAYLESS!!!

  27. Nancy

So sad! I get my kids shoes there. They were the only place for wide withs for the little ones

  28. dbld-amber

Ive just recently started shopping there and I found a few pairs that every time i wear them i get so many onlinepliments on. What a shame. I felt so hip and sexy in them and enjoyed all the onlinepliments from strangers.

  29. MBarnes

Another week….another store! What is really going on?? I just bought my daughter shoes there last weekend. I hate buying shoes online. 9/10 I have to return them because the fit is off. Very sad!

  30. Quentin

Do they plan to mark the bottom of the shoes with a big X in black marker?
That’s what my local Payless did when they closed a few months ago.

  31. pallotto

I went online and it says see stores so you can’t get them online right now

  32. lenin1991

    > … unable to find their footing …

    Har!

  33. Stephanie Spindler

🙁 This has been my go to for shoes for my kids b/c the grow so fast and my boys just destroy sneakers, wtih payless I
didnt have to spend a ton.

  34. Barbara

I have never bought a pair from them. I don’t think their shoes quality meet their price tags.
And couple pairs I gifted for my kids couldn’t survive till they grown out of the size.
It’s so poorly made but just look a bit cute.

I feel sorry for all employers though…

    • jan

Hmm…I get a pair of Champion shoes for my kids every year for school and it lasts them until they grow in the next size and the next child can wear them for playing outside. I usually get them $10 or less. Seems like a good deal for decent shoes to me…

  35. Sue

In my area, all the Payless stores are located inside malls. Since malls are beonlineing extinct, I’m wondering if the location there has contributed to their closing, too. We have one mall that’s half empty and another that’s empty and waiting for the wrecking ball. The brick and mortar stores that do well here are stand alone stores and outlets.

  36. Teakela

New Balance has wide and extra wide sizes. Shop clearance for sales. Or go to store and get sized. Then look online for cheapest price. I loved Payless $5 sale.

  37. Mom2Bear

I’m sad to see them go. I’ve bought my lo’s school shoes from them the past two years. She already doesn’t like shoes as is so to find some she calls onlinefortable and will keep on was a plus for me. I don’t know where I’ll find onlinefortable and affordable shoes anymore. 😢😫
