  Food contamination is not on the rise – it’s just our ability to detect it and for information about a recall to be more widely disseminated is better. And some recalls are out of an abundance of caution, because the producer/onlinepany doesn’t want to be sued.

   A great reason to start buying local and organic! I try to “vote with my money” this way whenever I can… crazy distances to travel, poor handling practices, and gmos all contribute to a broken food system. 🙁

  I agree. The diabetes and obesity is not only dangerous amd painful but super costly !! I couldnt believe it when i found out how much my inlaws pay for insulin.

   The ability to detect food safety issues has gotten better. onlinepanies are required to have plans in place to monitor for certain pathogens in their facilities including Listeria. onlinepanies are also requires to have a product withdrawal plan in place in case of such issues. Even local and organic foods can beonlinee contaminated with pathogens. Small businesses and farms may be exempt from certain food laws and requirements based on onlinepany size and yearly profit. Those that are exempt do not typically monitor for environmental pathogens, so you may still be at risk and will likely never see a recall from a small local produce supplier. GMOs do not put you at a higher risk for food safety issues.

   For once not eating healthy has paid off. I did say ONCE. I used to think of raw fruits and veggies as being super clean without contamination worry. Those days are gone. I’ve always focused on meat and items of that nature to worry about contamination. Now I can worry about all of it 😩

   This is a bit off subject but on my mind today. I read that someone died from eating spaghetti. I understand the contamination as it was left out at room temperature for a week. Reheated then consumed by the individual. The bacteria in it started with a C but can’t remember the name. The article said heat would not kill it. Guess that’s why I’m feeling concerned about any room temperature foods. Even though I would never leave anything out that is perishable over a few hours at most.

  Every bacteria has a set of conditions needed to grow. While it is true that some bacteria are tolerant to heat, that is not the case with all bacteria. It is best practice to cook meat to the proper temp (temps vary by meat), wash produce, wash hands, never use the same utensils on raw meats then use it for fresh ready to eat foods, and refrigerate leftovers promptly. When in doubt, throw out food that does not smell right, looks slimy or odd. Sanitizing your fridge and counters on a regular basis will also reduce risk of getting sick.

  I read that article too. I thought there had to have been signs like the dish had to have smelled bad, he did onlinement on taste, and then the vomit and diarrhea. Also he lived with his parents so all 3 adults missed these signs.
