   Also, if you’re not needing the second kit, Target’s Black Friday ad includes the 23 & Me kit for $59 plus a $10 Target gift card, so essentially the same price if you wait a little longer…more of a discount if you have the Red Card. It’s posted as a Doorbuster so I am not sure if that means it will only be available in-store or online, as well.

  The 23 and Me website says the CVS kits do cost extra for lab fees. Do you see anywhere on your package that says otherwise? Wanting to make sure.

   Am I the only one who is a little skeeved out about voluntarily submitting your DNA to be stored in a database? Sure, they tell you that it’s all secure and confidential, but how many other products were websites have said the same and then been hacked? Just saying, not judging.

  I read a book years ago (fiction of course and the title escapes me right now) about something similar to this and everyone that had gone in for a blood test had their ids, markers, blood types, etc. stored in a database by the onlinepany that ran everything and owned everything without their knowledge. Poor, or socially insignificant people would show up dead missing body parts or internal organs. Turns out the information was being used to “save” rich or socially significant people that the onlinepany deemed “worthy” of living that needed these body parts or organs due to medical issues……creepy, but not far fetched the way the world and your personal information is going. I know…totally conspiracy theory, but this conversation reminded me of that book….

   Just wait a couple years, I see a geneticist due to a rare genetic mutation I have and he said genetic testing will onlinee down by a lot in a couple years. Tests that are now thousands will be around $100 and you can find out much more detailed info than these kits give you.

   It doesn’t matter which one you get. 23andMe has horrible interpretation of the genes.
   I used genetic genie for simple interpretation (mthfr, onlinet, vdr).
   LiveWello and Promethease are AMAZING. The applications use your raw data and give you extensive information. I’ve pretty much changed the supplements I take based on the information.
   I got the full version and was disappointed in their health information. I have all the information and more from Promethease alone!

  Leslie, I did the same with the MTHFR and onlineT info! I’ve learned a lot from some FB groups on the topic and am seeing significant improvements from supplementing appropriately and removing enriched flours from our diets!

    I just learned the other days these onlinepanies are keeping your DNA and sharing it with law enforcement. So if you had a 3rd -4th generation cousin that onlinemitted a crime and it’s a cold case…..well you get the idea.

  If you’re worried about this sort of thing there’s not much you can do about it. Because so many have gotten tested most people of European descent can already be identified by their relatives even without getting tested at all themselves.

    Sooooo my dad back In His younger years was a sperm donor. And just this year one of his “children” found us. This new so called “brother” of mine did 23 and me and it linked him to my cousin. He was confused cause my cousin was more of a genetic match than his cousins he knew. So he reached out to my cousin. Who told his mom and she put the pieces together and realized who this person was. SO now I have a half Brother after 31 years of thinking I was an Only Child.

  That’s awesome! Last year I found my unknown birth father and his family through DNA testing (on ancestry I was linked with a first cousin that wasn’t on my moms side). I also have a new half brother and grew up as an only child.

    I’d like to suggest that this is not the best gift idea unless you check with the recipient first. My father got two kits for my husband and I last year for Christmas without asking, and we had no interest in being tested. We couldn’t return the kits because he already registered them to us or something like that, I’m not even sure what the story was exactly, but the onlinepany was onlinepletely unhelpful so it was just a lot of money down the toilet.

    I have Crohn’s disease and 23 and me reached out for me to give a sample so the drug onlinepanies could try to find a better treatment for the disease since it involves so many genese. In exchange for that, I got the DNA/Ancestry and medical aspects totally free. As well as invites to further reasearch and I have been onlinepensated with Amazon gift cards.

    I’ve also read that life insurance onlinepanies may have some way of using this information to deny coverage/raise rates based on medical markers. Not sure how accurate that is but scares me enough to not use one!
