These 10 Food Recalls May Make You Sick to Your Stomach (Goldfish, Ritz, McDonald’s & More)

Health officials from the FDA and USDA are warning consumers to avoid certain foods (like Ritz and Goldfish) and restaurant options (like McDonald’s salads) due to ongoing outbreaks of Salmonella and Cyclosporiasis, which can can result in serious illness and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people, or those with frail health and weakened immune systems.
Here are 10 recalls to be aware of (by date):
1. Goldfish Crackers (July 23):
Pepperidge Farm announced that whey powder in a seasoning applied to four varieties of crackers has been the subject of a recall by the whey powder manufacturer due to the potential presence of Salmonella. The following four varieties with the indicated codes are subject to this recall:
- Flavor Blasted Xtra Cheddar
- Flavor Blasted Sour Cream & Onion
- Goldfish Baked with Whole Grain Xtra Cheddar
- Goldfish Mix Xtra Cheddar + Pretzel
2. Ritz Crackers (July 21):
Mondelēz International voluntarily recalled 16 varieties of Ritz Cracker Sandwiches and Ritz Bits products due to a possible presence of Salmonella. These products contain whey powder, which its supplier has recalled due to the potential presence of Salmonella. Head here for more details.
3. Raw Turkey (July 19):
Due to a recent Salmonella outbreak across 26 states, you might want to check your turkey products – including pet food. Although NO product brands have been determined yet, the CDC and USDA-FSIS have reported 90 cases of Salmonella infection linked to raw turkey products, live turkeys, and raw turkey pet food. 4. Swiss Rolls (July 18):
Flowers Foods has voluntarily recalled Swiss Rolls distributed nationwide due to a possible Salmonella contamination in one ingredient, whey powder. The product is sold under the brand names Mrs. Freshley’s, Food Lion, H-E-B, Baker’s Treat, Market Square, and Great Value. No illnesses have been reported. Head here for more details.
5. Hy-Vee Spring Pasta Salad (July 17):
Hy-Vee, Inc. is voluntarily recalling its Hy-Vee Spring Pasta Salad due to a potential contamination with Salmonella. Approximately 20 illnesses in Minnesota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Iowa were potentially linked back to customers consuming the salad. The voluntary recall includes Hy-Vee Spring Pasta Salads in both one-pound (16 oz.) and three-pound (48 oz.) containers produced between June 1st, 2018, and July 13th, 2018, and available from the deli service case.
6. McDonald’s Salads (July 12):
On July 12th, there was an increase in cases of Cyclosporiasis reported among people who ate salads sold at McDonald’s fast-food chain restaurants. CDC also has received reports of sick people who ate McDonald’s salads in Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
McDonald’s is cooperating with the investigation and has voluntarily stopped selling salads in more than 3,000 locations in the following 14 states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
7. NOW Real Food Zesty Sprouting Mix (June 21):
NOW Health Group, Inc. is recalling its NOW Real Food Zesty Sprouting Mix because its primary ingredient, Crimson Clover Seeds, has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.
Approximately 10,000 units of Zesty Sprouting Mix were distributed online and in retail stores nationwide since December 2017. Go here for more details.
8. Del Monte Veggie Trays (June 15):
Del Monte Fresh Produce N.A., Inc. announced the voluntary recall of a limited quantity of 6oz, 12oz and 28oz vegetable trays containing fresh broccoli, cauliflower, celery sticks, carrots, and dill dip sold to select retailers in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. These trays may have the potential to be contaminated with Cyclospora, a parasite that can cause Cyclosporiasis.
The recalled products were distributed to: Kwik Trip, Kwik Star, Demond’s, Sentry, Potash, Meehan’s, Country Market, Food Max Supermarket, and Peapod in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin and have “Best If Enjoyed By” date of June 17th, 2018 or earlier. Go here for details.
9. Kellogg’s Honey Smacks Cereal (June 14):
Kellogg onlinepany announced it is voluntarily recalling 15.3oz and 23oz packages of Kellogg’s Honey Smacks cereal (with code dates listed here) because these products have the potential presence of Salmonella. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and FDA have so far reported a total of 100 cases of Salmonella from 33 states, and 30 people have been hospitalized. Go here for details.
10. Cut Melon (June 9):
According to the FDA, Caito Foods is voluntarily recalling fresh cut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, and fresh-cut mixed fruit containing these melons, produced at the Caito Foods facility in Indianapolis, because these products have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.
The products were packaged in clear, plastic clamshell containers and distributed in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, and Ohio and sold at retailers including Costco, Kroger, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Walgreens, Walmart, Whole Foods/Amazon, & other retailers.
