I LOVE the beans backpacks! We have 4 children that used them and STILL use them. We tried with our first child to do the cute fun cheaper kid design ones from other stores and lots of different brands and they last for only a short time. Through trial and tribulation we decided that the fun little kid ones may be great for K-1 but after that. It’s all LL Bean for use. They last forever. We get a slightly bigger one for grammar school and then a new one for middle – high school. Not because they wear out. Just because the kids tastes may change. These are the best backpack. Right through college for my older ones! Money well spent!!!!!!

Love these backpacks! My daughter has had hers from K-5, and only now wants a new one backside it was a floral print and she wants something “less flowery.” My son just finished year two with his, but’s its a solid color so I suspect it should get him through middle school.

I had my LL Bean backpack from 9th grade through all of college. They are the best! Of course I bought another a few years ago that I love!!

was hoping to order one for my kindergartener but these look like they are going to be too big

It would be too big. The “original book pack” is perfect for prek-5th grade. Lunchbox fits inside too so it wasn’t put down and left somewhere. We always kept a rain jacket in the small outer pocket in case of an end of school day storm. The “deluxe” size is perfect for middle and high school.

We get the big one for elementary school. It fits lunch, any needed books, water bottle, spare outfit(school wanted one kept in their bag k-2), raincoat and or winter coat with plenty of room left. Having room for their coat is why it was never lost in the spring.

I think I’ll wait hoping that they do a better back to school sale soon.

Whatever you do, please, for the love of all things holy, DON’T get your kindergartener a small preschool size backpack. You know those adorable Skip Hop type animal ones? My daughter was in kindergarten last year, and I’ve aided in kindergarten and 1st grade. They need to be able to chuck their folder, school projects, jacket or coat, gloves and hat into their backpack with ease. You would not believe how many kids onlinee to school with tiny backpacks that cause a ton of frustration for the child, teacher, and aides. Procedures like leaving for the day need to go as fast and smooth as possible, and wrestling with tiny insufficient backpacks eats up time. An inexpensive medium sized backpack does just fine.

Kindergartner….K teacher, here, but everyone spells this word wrong! 🙂

I think it’s all relative. My son had 2 backpacks- a small one and this LL Bean one but in a different design. He just finished the 3rd grade. Folders got bent in the small backpack. The LL Bean one was used for 2nd and 3rd grade and it’s been amazing. Lightweight and very roomy.

The original junior back pack is what my son had used through all of pre k and he’ll still get several more years out of it no problem. Big enough for library book, a full sized folder and odds and ends for winter and his snacks. I agree the tiny bags are pretty useless if you can’t fit actual school sized items. You can always upgrade to something bigger later when they have more gear to lug.
