thredup goody box — packaged clothes

It’s like Christmas, but any time of year!

Like many Hip2Savers, I LOVE shopping online, but my budget can only go so far. That’s why I recently starting shopping around through ThredUp, an online consignment store where customers can buy and sell their new or gently used clothes and accessories at a bargain.

Sounds pretty great, right? It is, though I had a couple qualms about it…

  1. They have an INSANE amount of clothes to choose from on their website. So much so, that when I’ve tried to order in the past, I’ve given up mainly because I simply don’t have enough time to sift through their entire selection.
  2. I can’t try before I buy. This is obviously a problem with any online retailer but with ThredUp’s return policy, I can only send back items for free if I elect to receive store credit instead of a refund.
  3. “But it’s used…” I don’t want to sound like I’m on a high horse (especially since my friends and I swap our used clothes ALL the time) but I always have some doubt on the garment quality. Even if I get a great deal, I don’t want to buy something beat up.

BUT, the heavens heard my woes and thus, ThredUp announced their Goody Boxes!

So, what’s a Goody Box?

Introducing the ThredUp Goody Box (Like Getting a Gently Used StitchFix Box)

Glad you asked! ThredUp basically took a page out of StitchFix and Amazon Prime Wardrobe’s books and created curated boxes of items specifically picked just for you. You can go with a preset box like Spring Essentials or 9-to-5 looks, or customize a box of your own. Customizations are made based on your size and style preferences that you set.

There is a $20 deposit on the box (currently on promo though for only $10) but it will apply towards any items you keep (though it’s non-refundable if you choose to send everything back).

How customization works:

  1. Start by heading to the Goody Box page on ThredUp
  2. Click “Get A Custom Goody Box” to start the customization process
  3. Choose the garment types you’d like to receive
  4. Input your sizes
  5. Select your budget ($10-25, $15-50, $20-75, $25-100)
  6. Determine your fashion style
  7. Highlight your favorite brands
  8. Fill out some final personal details (optional)
  9. Checkout (box deposit is currently half off at $10, regularly $20)
  10. Let your stylist know about any uponlineing events, your lifestyle, and styling preferences that they can take into account when selecting items for your box.

It’s really such a simple process and takes out so much of the hassle of navigating the site yourself!

What I LOVED about the box:

thredup goody box — all the products

For my box, I expressed my minimalist style, chose the cheapest budget option, and let my stylist know that I wear mostly casual clothes since I work from home. I got a healthy mix of tops, bottoms, and dresses ranging from floral patterns to solid black from brands like Xhileration, J Crew, and H&M. I have to say, out of the 15 items I received, I’m keeping 4 pieces. That may not seem like a lot but I’m actually really pleased with that ratio considering I’ve gotten 5 pieces from StitchFix and kept none.

The total for keeping those 4 items came to under $60.

As for my worry about the used fabric quality, I have to say while they don’t look brand new, they don’t look overly worn either. After a quick wash (for my own piece of mind) I strutted out with a new outfit for the weekend!

What I plan to change for my next order:

thredup goody box — all clothes

I probably won’t order again anytime soon since I really don’t need any more clothes but I do plan on changing my budget to the next tier just to see some higher end options. I’m also going to be very selective with the notes I share with my stylist. I explained that while I don’t like patterns I’ve been really into some pretty florals lately. Well, “pretty floral” to one person can be totally different another, so I think I’d save those specific searches to myself.

Overall, I REALLY liked the Goody Box and will order one again for sure! In the meantime, I’m going to ship my current box back (ThredUp allows for 7 days to decide what you want to keep before shipping the box back) so I can solidify my purchase.

Note that you won’t have to pay return shipping as it onlinees with a pre-paid label to send back what you don’t want to keep.

  3. Laura

    No plus sizes….bummer

    • Heidi

Is there a ā€œonlinepany ā€œ that you like and is affordable that offers plus sizes as I would have really liked to have tried this until reading your onlinement

      • Ann

Dia and Gwynee bee offer similar service for plus size. šŸ™‚

  4. Kerry Cunningham

Not available with their plus sizes. šŸ™

  5. Kim

I have never ordered a box from them, but I love Thred Up. I am a consigner and a buyer. I have purchased Vineyard Vines and UA clothes for my kids here, using my credit and theyā€™ve all been in excellent condition.

  6. Em

How soon is the shipping once ordered? I’m traveling soon so would appreciate anyone with experience.

    • Jervine87

It takes a little while. Like 7 days or so before they ship it then another 5-7 until it gets to you from my experience

    • Emily (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Shipping does tend to take a while, it was probably 2-3 weeks before I got my box. Hope that helps!

  7. Mandy

Iā€™ve read a few reviews of this service and my conclusion is that Hip2Save has ruined me! I canā€™t bring myself to pay $10-25 for used Target and Kohlā€™s clothing when I can get it brand new for the same or less following sales posted here. Some say that they like the recycling aspect of used clothes, but by the time you factor in packaging and shipping back and forth it doesnā€™t seem very eco-friendly anymore. Just my two cents, but thank you Emily for your review, and thank you H2S for finding us the best deals all the time!

    • Jervine87

Iā€™ve actually gotten brands I wouldā€™ve never bought before. $225 jeans for only $18!

      • Emily (Hip2Save Sidekick)

What a deal! Thatā€™s great it helped you discover new brands, and for a steal šŸ˜

      • Leigh

I guess it onlinees down to a matter of personal preference. I would never pay $18.00 for new jeans, let alone used ones. I do however, live in an area where yard sales are frequent and I may be spoiled.

    • Emily (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Glad it was helpful Mandy and thank you for your feedback on it!

OMG Iā€™m so excited! I love Thred Up. Iā€™m too frugal for Stitch Fix so This sounds right up my alley.

  9. Kristi

Thank you for posting! I’m not willing to pay StitchFix prices either! I watched the live FB video earlier with Collin….not sure if it was mentioned but I just read the FAQ section on the goodybox and it says that your stylist will have access to your favorites list/prior orders if any on ThredUp. I am going to go select some pieces I love and hope this will be considered when my goodybox is packed! I think that’s a good idea to make it more personal especially since there are so few brands to choose from when choosing your box options. Can’t wait for it to arrive!

    • Emily (Hip2Save Sidekick)

I did this too and I think it made a big difference ā€” I even received the pair of shorts that I listed as a favorite! Plus, you can even link a Pinterest board for even more inspiration.

Thanks for the heads up on this. It seems pretty low onlinemitment so I’m going to give it a try! I don’t enjoy clothes shopping, but I’m anxious to have someone else shop for me.

  11. Michelle

I love ThredUp, but the goody box was just not for me. I kept one item from my first box so that I wouldn’t lose out on the deposit. I really liked that I received an email saying they wanted to try again and would get their best treasurer hunter to put something together for me. The second box was a dud as well. Since ThredUp is second hand items the inventory is hit or miss.

  12. Melissa

I’ve tried 2 boxes so far and both have been duds. It honestly feels like I got reject boxes because the quality of the clothes were so bad and they were so ugly. I’m 31 and they sent me things that my grandmother would wear. Lots of heavy knit cardigans with flared sleeves, faded pastel loose fit capris, a couple pairs of faded colored nylon pants. I’m a size large shirt and for some reason 4-5 pieces barely came down to my belly button, so they were probably shrunk. A vinyl hobo bag, a cheap giant statement necklace when I’d put in the survey that I didn’t want accessories. It was like they dumped everything they couldn’t sell into my box and hoped I wouldn’t notice.

    I would not reonlinemend.

I actually provide this type of service with my clients. They provide a budget and their measurements and style and I shop for them and mail their items. I do the scouring myself instead of shopping at thread-up. Would prefer not to pay their markup pricing.

  14. Mrs.W

How fun! I may have to consider trying this! Thanks for sharing!

    • Emily (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Glad you enjoyed it and hope you like the box if you do decide to give it a try!

  15. Sue

I shop regularly at local thrift stores & get some amazing clothes that are like brand new. I just got a Michael Kors top & a Calvin Klein athletic top for $4 each that looked like they were hardly worn. I also get a lot of things for my daughter from Justice, Children’s Place, etc… that look hardly worn. It does take a lot of time to sift through everything, but I like that I can see how it looks & try things on.

  16. carealot

So is the budget like 10-25 per item . i think you said you paid 60 or did i misread this. Thank you

    • Emily (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Yes, I paid around $60 for keeping 4 items. I believe they were roughly $11, $12, $17, and $18, so totaled up it came to just under $60. The $10 I paid initially for the box was also credited into that. Hope that helps!

  17. Ihearthip

I ordered one of these the other day when you posted this and my box shipped today. Wanted to onlinement bc others said theirs took a long time to ship. Iā€™m looking forward to seeing what I get!

  18. MommySpendsLess

I ordered when you posted this and received my box this evening.

Based in this experience I will definitely be ordering another box soon. I like having a closet full of clothes that fit well and make me feel good but I don’t like shopping. Too often I buy something online or even in store then regret the purchase when I try the item on at home with the rest of the intended outfit. I loved being able to leisurely try everything on at home and grab shoes, etc. from my closet to see how everything would look together.

I was very specific in my profile description and when I opened my box I could tell my Treasure Hunter had paid attention. Everything was exactly the style, colors and brands I had mentioned. Straight out of the box I liked all but 4 pieces (2 of them purses). After I tried everything on I decided to keep just 2 items but it was only because the others didn’t fit quite right. I LOVE the 2 items that I’m keeping. One skirt was from a brand that I’d never heard of sold at stores I don’t frequent so without my Goody Box I never would have seen it. It’s a little pricer than what I normally spend on clothes, new or used ($43) but it was within the price range I selected and new it would have been about $150. It’s a perfect fit, perfect length, will match with several different tops, is a nice fabric, lined and generally is something I can see myself wearing regularly for years. Even the items that I didn’t choose to keep were close to a good fit and 2 keepers out of 15 is a better ratio than I normally leave an in-store fitting room with after hours of browsing.

I wish they would label, number or describe the clothing so it’s easier to match the pieces with the pricing list. For example, I had 3 shirts and 1 skirt all made by White House Black Market, all in sizes 0 or XS. Two were listed as “Women’s White House Black Market Short” and another as “Women’s White House Black Market Casu” – as I tried them on I didn’t know which was which.
