On Saturday, May 12th, the National Association of Letter Carriers is urging everyone to help “Stamp Out Hunger” with the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

Stamp Out Hunger is the largest one-day food drive in the nation and will help feed millions of families in all 50 states!

This is a perfect time for you to go through your stockpile and donate as many non-perishable and unexpired food items as possible to support this cause!

Grab your cans of soup, non-glass bottles of Juice, canned fruits and veggies, peanut butter, bags of pasta, canned protein (tuna, chicken and turkey) & brownie mixes, etc. and place all these items in a bag. You also can donate healthy, low-sodium, low-sugar items such as beans, oatmeal and other whole grains, and canola or olive oil.

Be sure to leave them at your mailbox this Saturday, May 12th. Your letter carrier will pick up your items and deliver them to local food banks or pantries.

I have baby food jars. Are those fine to leave out?

    • Renee

Yes! Our local food bank is always in need of baby food

  2. Chris

I work at a soup kitchen. Think about donating can tuna or can chicken, mayonnaise, dry drink mixes. Cream of mushroom, cream of chicken soup make good gravy bases. Spaghetti sauce, tomato sauce and dry pasta are great. Please don’t give outdated can goods. We don’t serve it.

    • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Thanks for all of the great suggestions Chris! Good to know!

    • Elaine

Expiration date rules vary. My food pantry served stuff past the best by date. We went off of the guidelines set by the government. I believe it was 2 years for canned goods.

    • Rebecca

Thanks, I didn’t think about dry drink mixes.

    • JenB

The Delaware food bank takes items that are expired up to a year

    • Cindy

Interesting info. The food pantry I work at, does give out items past Expiry dates stamped on products. The expired foods I onlinee across are mostly canned and bottled items. But I’ve also seen things like croutons, rice, quinoa, grated cheese, bread crumbs and even chocolates. Some items as much as 5/6 months past expiry….

I was wondering if anyone had a website to refer to.

We’ve done this before & food was stolen before it could be picked up. And we live in a nice neighborhood…

You still put good into the world. Hopefully it went to someone who needed it. We live in rural town, my mailman Kevin said he only had 4 homes participate. Bummer.

Rebecca, I’m sorry to hear your donation was stolen. I always bring my bag directly to my nearest post office. If you have one conveniently located, I’d reonlinemend that!

I will have to see what I can find. We participated last year but many of the sacks had been torn open and gone through in my neighborhood. Like they were looking for gold or something :-/ …didn’t take all the items just certain things.
I just went through the cabinets in March and threw out a sack of stuff that expired last year!

I got my bag ready. On my small street, we are the only house that gives. One one of local tv stationfacebook page. Someone made snotty onlinements about “Too bad, I won’t give, people can go hungry”. That makes me sick. I always give, since I do not have to use a food pantry and I cannot imagine being so full of disdain for other people.

Cleaned out the pantry tonight-My bag is ready!

  7. SJ

Got my bag filled & ready for Saturday!

Does the Similac and Enfamil ready to drink formula and those formula cans be accepted? They don’t expire till 2019 and aren’t going to be used here.

    • Trace_E

Found the number to call, 202-662-2489 and they said as late Ng as they’re no open then it’s accepted. Yay!!! So glad I can pass them
      On.

  9. Sou

This is great! My husband and I are starting Keto diet and I wanted to get rid of all of the pastas and noodles. So glad this is happening just in time.

  10. Kim B

How about some of that ronzoni gluten free pasta that was free with ibotta!

We had about 50% of the neighborhood give.
