   I’m not sure if everyone else’s FSA account works like mine, but I can’t simply buy these items and use my savings account money on them. I am required to get a doctor’s prescription on each and every item. So sure, I can buy bandaids and other first aid items. I can buy aspirin and heart burn medicin. But if I don’t have an individual prescription ahead of time, buying these items and trying to get reimbursed for them is a waste of time. Mine won’t even let me buy generic Nexium although I do have an Rx for Nexium. The very idea that I have to go to my doctor and have her spend her time writing up Rx forms for all these items is a burdensome for both doctor and patients.

  This is FSA Store here. We wanted to address your concerns and hopefully clear up some confusion around what does and does not require an Rx.

  Over-the-counter products that contain a medicated ingredient (Advil, Benadryl, etc.) DO require a prescription from a doctor for FSA reimbursement, as you said. This is due to regulations set forth in the Affordable Care Act. However, items that don’t contain a medical ingredient (band aids, first aid items, sunscreen, etc.) do NOT require a prescription. So your FSA allows you to purchase more items without a prescription than you might think!

  If you check out FSAstore.online, you will find that we differentiate between the products that don’t require a prescription and the products that do require a prescription. There is a category called “Eligible with Rx” that contains all of the products you do need a doctor’s Rx for, and they have blue “add to cart” buttons. All other products on our site don’t require an Rx and will be automatically approved by your FSA administrator – these products have red “add to cart” buttons.

   This post is misleading….a lot of FSA’s will not cover those type of things…. The most I can buy over the counter with mine are things for first aid treatment. Everything else has to be through a doctor….

   Yes both of the above posters are right. There was a revision to the FSA rules a few years ago and you can’t just go pick up OTC stuff anymore. You need a Drs RX.

   *Please* check the guidelines of your FSA and the IRS guidelines before you start spending money on these things. I worked on spending account claims for an insurance onlinepany for years and most of what’s cited in this post wouldn’t have gotten reimbursed or been eligible without a specific medical reason or RX. Granted, its to each their own, but keep in mind were your FSA spending to get audited and things aren’t eligible, they’ll tax the hell outta ya. Just a heads up, I hate seeing people get whapped because of the ridiculously strict guidelines.

  FSA Store here chiming in! You are correct that some items require an Rx or a letter of medical necessity in order to be eligible for FSA reimbursement. We strive to make it easier for consumers to understand what they can and cannot purchase with their accounts, so we have a detailed Eligibility List that shows which products and services can be purchased with an FSA (1) without an Rx, (2) with an Rx, (3) with a letter of medical necessity, and (4) which products/services are not eligible in any circumstance. Our list also has information for other types of accounts, including Limited Care FSA, Dependent Care FSA, HRA, HSA, and more. Hopefully this helps with your end-of-year FSA shopping!

   If you go to your FSA website (our plan has one) it will tell you what you can get. For instance, mine DOES allow the purchase of these items and even has a link for this store straight off their website. I have also used the flex card for contact solution, sunscreen, bandaids, etc. Just be careful, I think someone else pointed out not to ‘stock up’ on tons of the same stuff. But for my FSA it does work.

  The code you have printed on this article is incorrect. I tried HIP2SAVE15 and that went through. It says HIPSAVE15 above.
