  I doubt they’re going to a landfill. I see Target clearanced items at Goodwill all the time. I would guess from there they go to third world countries and get donated (and onlinepany probably gets a fat tax write-off). Even clothing with holes and/or rags at least gets recycled by the pound.

  you are correct. not only clothes but alot of stuff. family dollar is known for that or they chuck into the dumpster. we had a friend who got banned from there and dollar general for taking the stuff out of the dumpster that was brand new. only one time was an item cut. otherwise some of the people here got brand new clothes .anything in retail. even did it with brand new holiday cards etc. when instead they could have taken to a school, day care a shelter. waste of money.when or if sent to other countries they jack up the prices. people here onlinee to garage sales looking for new stuff with tags on them. and they try and get them for like a .25 when you are charging 2-3.00 for new items. we decided to take what we had left over and give to neighbors who go and travel to mexico because we know them and know the people over in Mexico will use them.

  I worked at Target and worked in price change for a bit. The clothes that we pulled off the floor were donated.

  They don’t go to landfills. They go to liquidation like DEF Salvage.
  Then they get sold to other parties for discounted by the case or pallets.

   This is more like a Dirt Cheap(here in South). Dirt Cheap is a salvage store of products from mostly Target, Walmart and some from Dollar General. Another version of Ross but in more sophisticated way. Hmmmm… would love to try them in the future.

   A Target C9 jacket that I bought my son for $15 is listed at $26.99. Same price discrepancy with Women’s Pajamas, they’re nearly double the price. Also, these items are “this season”, still online, so how are they on their way to landfills already?

   Someone wrote a book about how many clothes end up in the landfills in America every year and apparently it’s not just retailers. Consumers throw away old clothing too… so I was a little intrigued. It’s not like you can donate old underwear and tore up clothing to Goodwill, but you can’t throw it away either. I heard there are places that collect all bad clothing and ship it overseas where women use it to make rugs and other items.

   And to be more on topic, for those in the South who are not familiar with Bargain Hunt yet, look it up. Target sells all their overstock to them and I get clothes for as low as $1-$3 and even dollar spot items for like 20 cents. Ive gotten awesome finds from them.

  Mary, here’s what I’d do with your leather jacket…I make doll shoes and purses with upcycled leather and donate them (with clothes I sew from new fabric) to a charity that gives them to kids that have extended hospital stays. The charity gives the kiddos a new doll and several outfits to fit the doll, and a tote bag to carry everything. It helps the kiddos deal with the stress of their illness and having to be in a hospital, all through play therapy. Such a great cause!

   I used to work for a very large onlinepany, that required me to be in the back stock area of Walmart once in awhile. The things that I saw in their trash was horrifying!! I don’t know why some of these onlinepanies throw things away instead of donating them??!! It’s sickening!

    I don’t know if they’re everywhere – but here in Missouri we have bins everywhere from our small rural town to Kansas City called “Planet Aide” and it just takes ripped up/un-donate-able clothing and textiles. Usually found in parking lots of stores. Might check their website to see if there is a bin by you.

    I think retailers are improving on their waste. I see tons of items from Walmart (that clearly have been returned) at my local goodwill store. I see the same, for both Walmart and target, at Dirt Cheap stores. Dirt Cheap and Bargain Hunt are my favorite stores!

    Stores find that ‘destroying’ instead of ‘donating’ is a cheaper way of getting rid of old season or unsold merchandise. They generally rip tags in half and throw away. If you are smart enough and know the days you can ‘carefully’ go thru any garbage bins. Clothes are good, but if you get caught it IS considered stealing because the garbage bins are on store property. Anyway, they don’t want to deal with the paperwork and they get more for ‘destruction’ than they do for donating. There ARE some stores that think it is better to donate because they can handle the losses better because like Target & Walmart, they are everywhere!
