   I’m interested in getting a phone to give to my kids only for certain situations (like if I can’t stay for a practice, etc). I would let them use it for playing games on Wifi as well. Is there a cheap service I could use on one of these phones to only have minutes when needed (or just pay a very low fee monthly for only a low amount of minutes/text messages)?

  Not sure what service you have, but AT&T only charges us $15 per month for my son’s phone (added line to our cell service). He shares our data and we have unlimited text and talk.

  I went through cricket. I bought 4 cells for grandkids i pay 100$ per month with full coverage no limit on texts, wifi usage ect. I put parental controls on them for the ones who needed it. But i know some areas don’t have cricket so i hope this helps.

  We use Republic Wireless. Unlimited talk/text, and use of WiFi for $15/mo.

  I have pageplus( which is on Verizon network) for one of my daughters. Plans start at $12.95 a month for basic 250 mins talk and 250 text. For plans with data plans start at $29.95

  My other daughter has a smartphone on tracfone. cheapest plan for smartphone is smartphone plan with 200 text, 200 mins talk, 200 Mb data for $15

  They just have prepaid plans since they are younger. I didn’t want to put them on my Verizon contract.

  The best deal for what you are describing (limited calls, texts and Wi-Fi) would be Tello and their Pay as You Go. I have put a lot of family on this. You can load as little as $5 on it and it doesn’t expire. Calls are just $0.03 a minute, texts $0.01 and data at $0.02 a MB. Obviously, if you use more than just a little data you would want to go with one of their plans.

  You do need an unlocked/used Sprint phone or an unlocked CDMA phone like the Moto G4 and Play at Amazon. I have the G4 and it is an excellent phone. You can use these on GSM providers (At&t and T-Mobile towers) too.

   I’ve used cricket for over 8 years. Love it. Great price and great service. I’ve lived all over US and never had issues (IL, TX, CA, CO). I currently used an unlocked Orbic Slim phone and it works great (bought off ebay)! Any GSM unlocked phone will work will Cricket or buy a phone from cricket, or have yours flashed (best buy, walmart).

   I pay $35 and get unlimited everything. I have hardly ever hit the 3gb I pay for because I keep wifi on so it only kicks to data in my car or when I’m out and about. Even if you hit the 3gb you still get data it’s just at a slower speed. I can even text family in Canada and when traveling there in some areas I can still use my phone.

   Back when I started using Cricket there wasn’t a lot of areas covered, but last year they updated and use AT&T’s towers, so service is even better. If you have questions I can help based on my experience.

   We have five lines on Cricket for $110 a month. Love the service. We previously had Sprint for ten years. I’ve had three of the Blu R1 HD’s in this post (I kept breaking the screens!) and it’s a great phone. I’m a huge tech geek and do everything from my phone and don’t even use a laptop anymore. So I’d highly reonlinemend that $49 phone. Honestly though, it’s always $49 or $59 for Prime members. These prices don’t really seem to be all that great to me. I know for a fact it’s never $99. Like I said, I’ve had 3 over the past year. You can only buy two per Prime member but my husband was able to order the 3rd on his Amazon account even though we share Prime.
