Happy Friday: Homemade Halloween Costumes

Just wanted to share my super frugal costume I put together for our youngest. I got the goggles for $1 at Kmart with points from a sweeps entry, paid $1.50 for the shirt and pants at Savers, used a cartwheel offer and gift card for the soda bottle tank, the pacifier and felt we had at the house and got the tubing at Home Depot. We went to my son’s Fall Festival tonight and everyone just loved it!

I have baby #3 on the way and decided to make a fun maternity Mike Wazowski costume (from Monsters Inc.). I lucked out and found a green maternity t-shirt at Goodwill for $3.49. I bought 2 pieces of felt at Walmart for $0.50. And I used a few extra pieces of felt and thread I had on hand. It took me a couple hours and $4 to make this year’s costume. I love dressing up every Halloween with my kids and making my own costume has beonlinee part of our Halloween tradition. 🙂

With 4 kids Halloween costumes can get pretty expensive. When my 3 boys decided that they wanted to be Star Wars characters this year, I knew that costumes would be easy to find because of the new movie, but I also knew that they might be expensive. Many of these costumes run $30 each or more. With 4 kids that was way out of our budget, so I decided to see what I could make or borrow.
I purchased: 1 sheet gray felt (for the Princess Leia belt)- $0.31 at Michaels with a coupon, 1 sheet gray foam board – $0.71 at Michaels with a coupon, 1 brown t-shirt (to make Princess Leia hair)- $1.40 at Goodwill, 1 pair brown sweatpants (for Chewbacca)- $1.70 at Goodwill, Chewbacca hoodie- $18.99 at Target paid for with gift cards from previous diaper purchases
Total out of pocket: $4.12!
For Chewbacca, I bought the hoodie and pants, and the bowcaster was made with toys we already had and electrical tape. For R2D2, I used 2 sheets of poster board that I already had and foam board (I purchased gray, but already had the rest), and the helmet is made from paper mache. For Darth Vader, I borrowed everything from a friend whose child used this costume a few years ago, including the light saber. For Princess Leia, I put her in white tights, a white turtle neck, and then a white undershirt that belongs to one of her brothers. I made the belt from white felt I already had and bought gray felt for the detail. I made the cap and hair buns from a Goodwill t-shirt.

Hip2Save always helps inspire my family and I to be creative on a budget. This year my littlest wanted to be Superman and my oldest wanted to be Spiderman’s Villian Dr. Octopus. So with a little creativity, a lot of items around the house (like boxes, an old backpack, soccer socks, an old t-shirt, some landscaping drain pipe) and a trip to the Goodwill and Home Depot we were able to make both costumes for under $30 total. I know a lot of people can probably get a store bought one on sale for less and with a lot less stress and effort, but the joy in my kid’s faces at seeing their imaginations onlinee to life is priceless. Thank you Hip2Save for always making it easy and FUN to save money! Happy Halloween!!
