Directions:

  1. Measure about two inches from the bottom of bag and draw a line across the bag with a Sharpie.
  2. Using the line as a guide, cut your bag with scissors.
  3. Start from the top and cover bag with a strip of tape a little longer than bag and fold over ends. Overlap the next piece of tape about 1/8 of an inch. The 3rd strip you can fold over the bottom of the bag, and finish with two more strips up the back of bag.
  4. You can stop here or embellish with another color and or stickers to personalize.
  5. I decided to use a thin red electrical tape on the sides of this bag and created a little clear side pouch for a student I.D or name card.
  6. To do this, just cut out a credit card sized piece of plastic from another plastic bag. I folded a piece of tape around one edge of the plastic and then taped down the sides and bottom to the side of the pouch.

Very cute & will be perfect mid-year when pouches seem to always tear up or the zipper breaks! Nice project!!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Yes I agree! Plus a good way to make a binder or notebook cover last longer.

  7. rosana

  8. Mgat5

Love it! Making some for myself!! I usually keep some “first aid” stuff in my purse inside a bag… This will make it nicer!!

Last year we covered a simple clipboard last year with duct tape and it was more economic than buying a fancy one. I will skip this one since I’ve already started sewing the pouches. 😀 Neat idea though!

  14. Edwina

    Genius!

  15. buffy

awesome idea! Ace hardware has duck tape on sale for $3 this week also!

  16. ihearthip

Do these end up being about the size of a snack size bag? Wondering if I could use snack size bags, also, or if they would be too small?

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Hmm I think they would be shorter but as long as a pencil fits? You can really use whatever size you like.

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Yours turned out way cute! Fun project 🙂

    • Rae

Just looked at yours and seriously hammer in some grommets spaced out for binder rings and then you can keep it all in a binder(school or coupon 😉 )

  17. Lindsey

What a great idea! I am a teacher and this will be a great 1st day activity for my students as they get organized for the year! For any other teachers planning to use this idea, I am thinking I will pre-cut the duct tape and have it hanging from a table edge and allow each student to choose 6 pieces.

    Thank you!

  18. melloddie

This is such a good idea! I’m going to make some for my boys Legos. Thinking of printing Lego pics and taping in the center so they know what pieces they are. Also looking to make a coupon holder from this. So many uses – thanks so much!

  19. JA

Okay, so my 10 year old daughter and I just got done making seven of these and they are so much fun to make! We went to the Dollar Tree and used their brand zipper bags-15 ct. box for $1.00, they worked great. They also had a lot of tape-polka dots, camo, solid colors in the hardware aisle, even one Duck brand with dragons on it. In the school supply aisle they had thinner tape that was so pretty, one was black lace! We made some for cousins and friends, I know they will love them!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

That’s great! I love all the cool patterns

  20. Charlene Maugeri

I love this! Would you mind if I use a link to this post and a picture from it for a “back to school” round up post I’m working on?

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Sure and thanks Charlene!

  21. JC

I guess I’m confused why you cut the bottom of the bag off before taping? Wouldn’t the tape at the bottom of the bag just stick to itself anyhow? Is it just to make it shorter?

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Yes to make shorter. You don’t have to do that step.

  22. Heather

loved this craft. We made these at the library and the kids loved them.

  23. Wessen

    Love the creativity and simplicity!
I, too, like to have the link to share it with my child’s KG teacher!
