Ever since my one-year-old son started eating baby food, I’ve been saving the glass baby food jars… I just knew I could use them for something eventually! I saw an idea on Pinterest, and decided to give it a try. After a few weeks of working on this project a little at a time, I finally finished! I’m not generally a very crafty person, so I did have to purchase some of the supplies (glue gun, glue sticks, fabric), but I figured that I spent about $20 total and a few hours to make 25 super cute, homemade gifts. And if you already have some of these things on hand, it would be even cheaper!

Here’s what you’ll need:

Glass baby food jars and lids
Goo gone
Laundry detergent
Black duct tape
Black construction paper
Fabric for scarves
Black and orange sharpies
Hot glue gun
Glue sticks
Tape
Hot chocolate mix
Mini marshmallows
Mints

The longest part of this process (by far) was cleaning the labels off the baby food jars. I ended up using Goo Gone, and then laundry detergent to remove the Goo Gone residue. But there may be an easier way! After they were all clean, we filled them with hot chocolate, marshmallows (which I bought on sale with coupons!), and mints.

Then I drew on the faces and buttons and hot glued the jars together. I covered the edge of the lid with black duct tape and cut a bunch of circles out of black construction paper. I cut out the centers to tape on top of the lid and slipped the ring over the lid. (I’m sure you could do the hats many other ways though.) Then I cut strips out of the fabric and tied them around the neck for scarves. I’ve given away a few already and they absolutely LOVE them. And hot chocolate is the perfect gift for a cold, winter day!

    rubbing alcohol will take off the glue and residue

      Soaking them in really hot water will also take off the labels. Just be sure to scrape at the glue while the jar is still warm from the water.

        I agree. I just purchased 9 jars for my sons school project and I soaked them in soapy water (used Dawn) for 3 hours. The labels literally fell right off. Super easy.

      I have 7 mth twin boys ( and a 4 yr old) and totally agree with AG. That was the best advice I received when I was pregnant. I am exclusively nursing and I would go crazy if I fed them at different times! lol

    If you put the jars in the oven, pull them out and using a hot pad to hold them, and wipe off the residue. It onlinees right off, of course remove the labels and clean first.

    magic eraser takes the sticky residue off. i love my magic eraser! It also took off some crusty food in the fridge that nothing else would remove including a knife scraping that didn’t even work .

    I just made these a few nights ago with a youth group at church. We painted the lids with black acrylic paint and used black cotton fabric for the hats. Just cut out circles and screwed them on under the lid. Very easy. These are so cute.

    Try soaking in hot water. If goo remains, use a blow dryer to soften and it should onlinee off. This worked with peanut butter jar labels. . . sorry if this has already been suggested. I’m too busy to read past onlinements.. . . gingerbread in the oven!

    Apparently Goo Gone is pretty smelly and toxic. The best and safest way to remove the sticky residue is baby oil. Yes, I did it for all my baby food jars in minutes…much quicker and safer. Love this idea!

    i use olive oil to remove glue from jar. and i soaked them in hot water dawn and a hint of bleach as a disinfectant and clean left over mess from oil. worked great!!!

    You can made your own Goo Gone. Take vegetable oil, add baking soda until you have a paste. Then rub on glue. Can either use your fingers or rag. Wash afterwards to get residue off. No harsh smell.

      I used hot glue and they all fell apart. So now I use liquid nails. Works wonderful

    For easy cleaning of the glue on the jar. Make sure all the paper is off the glue, Rub some peanut butter over it,and let it sit. I usually let it sit a few hours(not sure how long it takes) while I do some housework. Wipe the pb off while running under hot water and the glue wipes right off!

    I used a razor blade to remove the residue from the labels and also the printed dates on the jars, easy and quick. You just have to be careful.

      I also used pipe cleaners for the scarfs instead. Again quick and easy, and probably a little less expensive. I used those little bottles of craft paint instead of permanent marker and also used that to paint the lid for the hat.
