Check out this email from reader, Lisa…
Just wondering if you had a “target price” for most of your Back to School deals.  I look at some of the deals and think it’s a great price, but then 2 weeks later it onlinees out $0.50 cheaper!  Can you do a quick list of folders, pens, sharpies, filler paper, etc with a “great price” idea next to it?  I know that there are teachers out there who definitely know what a great target price is for most of this stuff since they buy it every single year.  Thanks!!

Can you help me answer Lisa’s questions…if you have certain price points for school supplies, please share with all of us in the onlinement section below. Thanks so much! 🙂

As a third grade teacher entering my fifth year (yikes!) teaching, here are the best deals I’ve onlinee to expect each year:

Wide-ruled spiral bound notebooks : 15 cents each at Target
24 count Crayola Crayons : 25 cents each at Wal-Mart
2-pocket Folders with Prongs: 15 cents each at Wal-Mart (theirs hold up the best)
#2 Pencils (8 pack) : 1 cent each at Staples (limit of 25 pkgs)
Crayola Washable Markers : $1 per pkg at WalMart (same for colored pencils, too!)

I’m sure that you can find these things even cheaper, such as at Staples and other office supply stores when they have random weekly deals, but usually the limit on the amount you can purchase is so small that I would spend lots of time going to and from the store multiple times a day in order to have enough for 30 students. Target and Wal-Mart have no limit on the amount you can purchase.

I just bought twi 24 pack of Crayola crayons for $2.50, and thought that was a good deal….but I just realized they are FREE this week at Walgreens!

  2. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Do these Office Depot sale items require rebates??

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Yes Collin do you know about that? I was also wondering.

      • Collin

There were no rebates mentioned in the weekly ad. 😀

        • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Thanks! It looks like a lot of great deals && you don’t even have to worry about rebates! Awesome!

  3. Mel

.20 for a 2-pack of glue sticks is the lowest they go at Walmart–but a 6 pack was on sale for $1 at Target and that’s the lowest I’ve ever seen.

    .50 for filler paper

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

A 2 pack for .20 cents is still cheaper than a 6 pack for $1……..lol

    • Bama Leone

Biglots had a sale this week 10 for 1.00 but they were off brand.

Don’t forget to take advantage of several onlinepanies PRICE MATCHING POLICY. This last week Office max had their wood rulers on sale for .05 cents each, normally $1.50. I was at office depot getting their deals and asked about the price match policy they said they have one. I then got the office depot brand wooden rulers normally priced at $1.99 and they price matched them for the .05 cent ones at office max. onlineparing the two later when I got home I noticed the Office depot ones and MUCH better quality and a few of the Office Max ones have the metal part sticking out further at some points than others. I think I will take those back and stick with the ones from Office Depot. They also price matched Pencils for .10 cents (I think) and the 100 page onlinepisition notebooks for .25 cents with the walmart ad. I was VERY pleased with the experience I had at Office depot.

When I went to Office Max next, they said they DO price match but it has to be EXACTLY the same item with the same item number. They also said they WILL NOT do store brand for store brand like Office Depot would.

    • Karin

FYI – my Staples price matched Kmart, Office Depot, and Office Max for me. They said as long as it as identical item and you bring the ad in.

We have a Big R by us and they have backpacks for $6.99. onlinees in 4 or 5 diff. colors.

Wal-Mart will put onlineposition notebooks (the old style bound notebooks) on sale for .50 each before school starts- I noticed this year that they went down to .25 each- I’ve never seen that. I teach high school science and use these for lab notebooks. Each year, when Wal-Mart puts them on sale, I go in and buy a few cases. I then sell them to my students for the price I paid- which is WAY cheaper than the usual $1 to $2 and we both win. I make sure they have a lab notebook from day one and they don’t have to go out and find one (because they never buy those as school supplies before school begins) and they get them cheaper than they otherwise would as well.

Crayola Crayons- I never pay more than .25 cents per pack
Crayola Markers (the thick ones and the thin ones) and colored pencils- Usually go down to .50 cents per pack but I won’t pay more than $1 per pack
    Colored Pencils- Crayola-
Rulers- plastic- no more than .10 each (at Wal-Mart for a few weeks before school starts) and other places but usally in limited numbers elsewhere. I snapped up the wooden ones at Walgreens a few weeks ago at .09 each. I was so grateful they didn’t have a limit on them.

Copy Paper– I try to load up enough to last me the whole year this time of year- and I won’t pay more than $1 per ream (man have i gotten cheap, lol) but Sundays this time of year are spent (after church) doing the rounds so that I can load up each week on cheap paper and other supplies
    Filler Paper- .25 at Wal-Mart-
Single Subject Spiral Bound Notebooks- .10 each usually at each of the office supply stores at some point and Wal-Mart for a few weeks
Glue sticks- usually also go down to about .10 each – I load up enough to make the whole year- we go through a ton in my classroom and I can’t afford much more than that.

  7. Beverly

    I forgot scissors–
Big Lots will put kids’ scissors on sale for .25 each during one or two weeks
Adult size scissors- I can get for .50 from the office supply stores at least one time before school starts, but they usually limit to 3 and I need larger numbers– but I won’t pay more than $1 and Wal-Mart and Target will have them for that price. These aren’t Fiskars or anything like that- but they are decent scissors.

  8. Sherri

DOn’t forget Walgreens. They’ve been doing sales on pencils, pens, notecards, and more for less than a quarter…pencils this week will be 9cents!

  9. Karin

I loved when using the Office Depot coupon $10 off of $25 – I bought whatever had a rebate for approx. $15 and then bought the school supplies I needed with the difference 🙂
I keep hoping they’ll have another coupon out soon so I can get the last few items … if not I’ll just buy them on-sale 🙂

  10. Bridget

Are there any $ off X coupons out there for Staples or Office Max? I want to buy some shredders for the office!

    • melissamae76

My Staples takes onlinepetitor’s coupons. You should see if yours does.

  11. Catherine

I generally go for 25 cents or less rule. This is usually the time that you are going to find the best deals. In a bout a week, the prices will start going up.

This is my favorite time to buy school supplies. Because I will buy for the whole year.

Also, if you get something that is a good price this week and a better price next week. Buy more and donate it. If I got hung up on everything being at a right price I may never purchase stuff because I’m always waiting for some deal.

  12. dwagnfly

I always try to get the .01, .05 and .10 cent deals at Staples and Office Max. They usually have Elmers glue, folders, 10 ct pencils, 10 ct pens, rulers, 24 ct crayons, filler paper, copy paper (ream after rebate), etc.
But paying .25 cents for most items is fair. onlineposition books, 4 ct highlighters, 10 ct washable markers, 24 ct crayons, Elmers glue, 2 ct glue sticks, etc.

Remember that both Office Max and Staples have a teachers reward card program and offer increased limits for teachers. Like when the limit is 2 for a 5 cent pack of crayons, the teachers limit can be up to 25!

  13. Samantha

I don’t have kids in school, but remember from last year that CVS had plastic rulers, filler paper, spiral notebooks, glue, memo pads, pens, pencils and kid’s scissors free after EBs. They already did some sales this year. This wouldn’t work for teachers, but if you just need things for your kids, check CVS!

  14. Lauren

I was at office depot at 12.15 and they open at 12 and i got the last packs of paper wow those went fast
