Whip up Easy Homemade Butter Using Just One Ingredient!

Homemade Butter

yield: 16 SERVINGS

prep time: 20 MINUTES

total time: 20 MINUTES

Ingredients

  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt flakes

Directions

1

Attach the whisk or attachment to your stand mixer. Add the cream to the mixing bowl.

2

Set the speed to medium and mix until the butter separates from the buttermilk. You'll get whipped cream in about 5 minutes. Stop and scrape the edges down and continue on. It takes 15-17 minutes in my mixer in total to create butter. If you have a splash guard use it, or you may need to use a kitchen towel draped over mixer towards the end to avoid splashing.

3

Once the butter is clumped and separate, pour the mixture over a mesh strainer or into a cheese cloth to strain. Press gently to remove the liquid. Pour the buttermilk in a separate jar to use in other recipes!

4

Rinse the butter with ice water to remove as much buttermilk as possible. This step will help the butter last longer. I dip the strainer with butter in a large bowl with ice water to rinse. You'll notice your butter firms up in the ice water, making it easy to clump together.

5

Season the butter with salt by stirring some in.

6

Form the butter into a log and store in parchment paper or plastic wrap. You can also store the butter in a butter crock or small food storage container. It's best to refrigerate to avoid spoilage.

Everything is better with butter! 🧈

There’s a reason why butter makes everything taste better – it’s rich, creamy, and oh-so-delicious. But what if I told you that making your own creamy, velvety whipped butter is just as easy as pouring heavy whipping cream into your stand mixer? You can easily create homemade butter that’s miles ahead of store-bought options.

Learning how to make homemade butter is honestly too EASY!

All you need to do is pour heavy whipping cream into the bowl of your stand mixer, start mixing, and let it run until the cream transforms into butter! You’ll first see it thicken and turn into whipped cream, but with a little more time, it will separate into butter and buttermilk, leaving you with an irresistible creamy indulgent butter.

You’ll then use a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to drain off the liquid and soak in ice water to rinse off any remaining buttermilk. This will prevent spoilage. Don’t forget to save your buttermilk in a jar to use in pancakes or other recipes!

Curious about my cute marble butter dish? It’s my favorite! I love the glass dome. You can grab it at Crate & Barrel.

Extra tips for making this homemade butter recipe:

  • Do I have to use a stand mixer to make butter? You can use an electric hand mixer or a food processor. Whipping times may vary on each, so just remember it turns into whipped cream and goes through a couple of stages before butter forms.
  • How long does homemade butter last? This can depend on how much of the buttermilk you are able to remove since it causes spoilage. Typically homemade butter can only last 1-2 days out on the counter, and 1-2 weeks in the fridge since there are no preservatives.
  • Can you freeze homemade butter? Yes, this freezes well. Be sure to wrap the butter well in plastic wrap or a freezer-safe bag. Homemade butter can stay frozen for up to 6 months or longer. Transfer it to the refrigerator overnight to thaw.

Unless you happen to get a screaming deal on heavy cream at the grocery store, this may not be a big money-saving project, but it sure is delicious and worth the little bit of extra effort.

It’s perfect for spreading on toast, baking, or using in any recipe that calls for butter. Enjoy the rich, fresh flavor – it’s so much better than store-bought!

With all this yummy sourdough bread I have been baking, homemade butter is an excellent onlinepanion.

Homemade sourdough tortillas would taste amazing with this butter!

Thanks, Lina! This looks like fun. Do you add the salt at the beginning before you whip the butter?

Whoops just updated! Thanks so much for asking. I would mix some in after it’s strained. Thanks Beth!
