Here’s what our Hip team shared about their Valentine’s Gifting Traditions:

“My hubby and I exchange gifts for Valentine’s Day but it’s never anything too extravagant. I’ve never really been a huge Valentine’s Day person. Having said that, we do usually get each other some sort of candy/treat we like and then something fun like a board game, book, or video game and he usually gets me a bouquet of flowers. Last year he got me a Nightmare Before Christmas paper bouquet which I loved because I can keep it up all year and I didn’t have to worry about them dying.” – Liz

“During our first years of dating, we exchanged small gifts like chocolates or candy. It felt more like gifts just for the sake of giving a Valentine’s Day gift. I do like the idea of putting more thought into a gift to celebrate. I love Liz’s tradition of having something fun incorporated with the gift so I’ll likely go with some cutesy Valentine’s candy from Target and a card or board game for my husband this year. And since Valentine’s Day is on a Friday this year, we plan to treat ourselves to a dinner out. We have a few restaurant gift cards too so all the more reason to celebrate!” – Emily

“I LOVE Valentine’s Day. My husband and I don’t exchange gifts but usually go to dinner. I do decorate and I always get my kids a small treat bag or mini gift and probably always will because I just find it fun.” – Amber

“Before we had our daughter, we’d go out to dinner and celebrate. My husband would send flowers or candy with a card. Once she was born, those early Valentine’s Days with a baby/toddler were a blur, and we probably didn’t do much. As she’s grown, we’ve included her in our celebrations. My husband makes dinner and gets us flowers and candy—nothing extravagant. This year, I’m making my daughter a Valentine’s basket since her school doesn’t do exchanges in 7th grade and we’ll go out to eat as a family. And of course, I’ll decorate…I do for every holiday, big or small because I can’t help myself!” – Jessica

“My husband and I don’t exchange gifts – sometimes cards. We do treats for our daughter, and I send little things to the grown kiddos and all the grandkiddos, too.” – Liza

“We will sometimes exchange gifts but we always go out to eat. Usually a long lunch somewhere fun to celebrate the day. But I always get my kiddos a Day treat. I don’t care if they’re in their 60’s. If I’m still around, they’re getting some Valentine’s goodies.” – Cass

“I think my hubby has missed every single Valentine’s Day that we’ve been together due to his job, so I send him with some sort of surprise note, and the babies and I always do a mini ‘party’ with crafts and all the Valentine’s themed goodies. It’s not a huge holiday in my mind and I expect nothing, but it is the perfect excuse to do all the things with LOVE. This year we are making a heart chain and writing one thing we love about a family member each day until the 14th.” – Chelsey

“My boyfriend gifts me some peace and quiet since his family goes on vacation for Valentine’s Day every year. This year they’re going to Japan. What ends up happening is he gets me gifts while he’s on vacation (this year I asked for matcha and skincare!) and I pay for someone to clean the house/do landscaping so he gets back to a sparkly home. Win-win for both of us” – Madison

Some of our Hip sidekicks don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day at all.

“Never been a fan of Valentine’s Day and we don’t exchange gifts or really celebrate at all over here. When my kids were little, we did the classroom Valentine’s for school, but other than that I don’t get my kids anything for Valentine’s Day either.” – Trish

“My hubby and I do a big fat nothing for Valentine’s Day, and we’re totally good with that. 😆 My husband calls it a Hallmark holiday, and honestly… I kinda agree. 😬 I totally get buying Valentine’s exchange goodies for the kids when they’re in school, but I don’t really see the point in exchanging gifts with my husband. There are so many other important days to celebrate – birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day… the list goes on. Plus, I personally love it when my husband does something sweet on a random day, like bringing me a coffee or filling up my gas tank. That means way more to me than flowers on Valentine’s Day!” – Collin

“We don’t go out of our way to celebrate Valentine’s Day. As Collin said, it feels like a Hallmark holiday that I just feel that it adds to the consumerism that I don’t feel good being a part of. That said, I do always find us doing something special just for the sake of showing love to each other. We will normally cook a nice meal that the kids will love and there may or may not be heart shapes involved.” – Sara

“No gifts and we try to avoid restaurants that day. My husband still gets the kids a candy or small treat. One year he forgot and my daughter was like what the heck, Dad? LOL” – Lina

“When my husband and I got together we decided on no Valentine’s Day, too. He did get me a onlineputer mouse one year but I think he had ordered it and it just happened to arrive on Valentine’s Day.” – Elizabeth

My husband and I don’t usually exchange gifts for Valentine’s Day–I think we did just the first year we were married, which was 21 years ago. Our anniversary is in January, and between that and Christmas the month before, we’re usually out of gift ideas. We definitely avoid restaurants on Valentine’s Day, though some years we’ll get Chinese takeout and watch a movie at home just to acknowledge the day.

  6. Jennifer Lape

No significant other but I buy chocolates for my daughters. My father would get me pistachios every Valentine’s Day and put them in a heart box. That was my favorite gift ever.

We usually exchange something for a gift, but it’s so hard onlineing up with new ideas. So more recently, I’ve been trying to do an event like a hockey game or dinner out rather than items we don’t need.

I don’t have a significant other right now, but even when I did, I have never officially celebrated Valentines Day. Might be worth an extra kiss or a text. But nothing more.

That being said, I do enjoy hanging a pretty heart on the door. Even more so to add extra cheer after having to take holiday decorations down.

After almost 45 years together, I think we’ve got this! 😉 We have decided not to get gifts for each other anymore, but try to bless others in some way. We will stay in and cook something on the grill. It’s been fun reading about all the other things folks will do. Happy ❤️ Day everyone!!
