Give the gift of sourdough bread making! 🍞

A few of us here on the Hip2Save team have recently started baking sourdough bread and are totally hooked. Last week I shared a cute DIY Christmas ornament that looks like a mini sourdough starter, and now I’m back with a fun sourdough-themed gift basket gift idea! If you have a sourdough fan in your life consider gifting any or all of these helpful supplies.

Once you get the timing and process down, baking sourdough is easy to aconlineplish and beonlinees a little addicting! I mean who doesn’t love some warm homemade crusty bread with butter? YUM!

Collin, Bryn, and I all love baking sourdough and chatting about it!

It’s satisfying to slice into a crusty loaf of warm bread to serve your family and it’s basically just flour, salt, and water. Our kids and husbands are really enjoying this new skill! Ha! I love that you can go all in and be very precise or just be super casual and the bread will still turn out.

Here are some of my favorite sourdough baking supplies!

We are all brand new to sourdough and loosely follow the same Emile Raffa everyday sourdough recipe. Her book Artisan Sourdough Made Simple is fantastic; I love her bread and bagel recipes, which is why I have included in the gift basket.

I think the key to success is to have a strong sourdough starter. You can order sourdough starter online, get some from a friend, or make your own. I picked up a highly-rated glass sourdough starter kit with a nice breathable lid and scraper that will keep things nice and neat. It has instructions to make your own starter, or you can use it as storage for your starter, so it’s a great addition to the gift basket, even if your giftee is already baking.

Having a kitchen baking scale to measure ingredients is much faster and more accurate than using measuring cups. I have been using this inexpensive one from Amazon and love it, so I’m suggesting to add that, too.

Fill your sourdough gift basket with these finds:

black gift basket with label from Walmart

I grabbed a woven basket with a cute chalk label from Walmart.online to hold all the gifts and wrote sourdough on the tag with a marker. It’s a great size, and can beonlinee a helpful storage container for supplies too!

Then I layered in some Christmas tea towels for a practical item that adds a pop of holiday color.

sourdough proofing baskets

Although Banneton baskets are not essential, they are nice to have for proofing bread. The silicone ones are easy to clean and make great lines in the bread. You can snag an affordable set on Amazon that also onlinees with all the helpful kitchen tools shown above, including a Danish whisk, metal dough scraper, scoring blade, and stencils to decorate your loaf with flour.

Collin also loves the silicone slings to bake inside a Dutch oven instead of using parchment paper. I plan on getting some of those too! You can see them in action (and follow along our team’s sourdough journey) with our Sourdough Highlights button on Instagram.

Your giftee will be all set to start a sourdough journey!

I love how my sourdough bread gift basket turned out! And even if you opt for just one or two of these items, any sourdough fan would love it. I will be giving this one to my mom as she is just getting started baking sourdough, and there are a few other names on my list I think would enjoy one, too. 🎁

I love this idea and also enjoyed the sweet starter gifts you made, Lina! I’ve been baking sourdough for years, and this year for my birthday, my family treated me to a flour mill so I can freshly mill our grains. My bread stays fresh twice as long, and the flavor is out of this world delish. I’d encourage anyone to give it a try! I’d love to see more about y’all’s sourdough journey! Holiday love to you and yours, and thanks for all you do!
