   I haven’t shopped Aldi yet, but I appreciate their efforts to lower costs for consumers. I hope they continue to expand their cost saving measures as an incentive to increase consumer patronage. If they succeed, hopefully other major grocery chains will follow suit and reduce their prices. Just today, I was shopping at Ralph’s which is in the Kroger family of stores and wanted to pick up a cauliflower. I was so angry that one head of cauliflower was going to cost me $7.00, but a huge bag of chips would be half the price! People often discuss the concerning rise in childhood obesity, the alarming increase in diabetes type 2 and in general, the unhealthy American diet. What grocery retailers need to do is sell vegetables, fruits and lean protein at affordable prices and maybe, begin to offset the harm that poor diets consisting of highly processed foods has wrought. In addition, put corporate greed aside and stop exploiting their customers by continually raising food prices. We are no longer in a supply chain deficit as we were 4 years ago and there is no justification for the rising costs of consumer goods.

  You’re right that there isn’t a supply chain deficit any more, but higher energy prices = higher transportation costs for that cauliflower, along with higher minimum wages for & higher benefit costs on grocery retailers are putting upward pressure on food prices. There is no downward pressure. Grocery retailers operate at a slim profit margin & they are passing along those higher costs to procure food and operating costs to customers. We may onlineplain about it, but we still pay the asking price. Look at Wall St. & the stock market. Business is good. And they could care less about obesity, diabetes and unhealthy diets.

  Aldis’ advertisements are about passing the savings on to us…isn’t that the point? Which OP said they haven’t shopped there…but Aldi and Lidl are both way more expensive then when they opened not too long ago, our way. They used to be cheaper on fruits & veggies, but not lately. I’d love to see more sales on fresh produce and healthy, miniminally packaged snacks for my family. I don’t really care about the logistics or cost for the business to get there, as long as the savings are passed to the consumers. To say that we continue to pay the high prices is a silly argument surrounding food…it’s not a choice. Eating healthy shouldn’t have to be a choice based on budget either. Nice to see fellow H2Savers chiming in on this none the less 🙂

   American gas prices in 2012, 2013, and 2014 were over $3 a gallon, and food prices were MUCH cheaper back then. So why are we blaming rising fuel costs so much for the current massive price hikes? I remember gas hitting $4 a gallon for a little while when I was in college even, in 2010 or 2011, and distributors managed to get food from one place to the next without a %25 to %100 price hike.

   Some of the rise in costs is due to war in Ukraine. Produce prices are higher due to drought, disease and some labor shortages and increased cost of plastic packaging and pesticides. Increased cost of gas has impacted food cost some as it has been consistently near or above $3 per gallon for close to 3 years. Previous gas spikes were short lived.

   I’ve noticed Aldi is no longer “the lowest prices in town” which they claim. Walmart has lower prices on the majority of regular grocery items that I onlinepare.
