Straws may just be a thing of the past!

We’ve seen a plethora of restaurants and fast-food establishments axing the need for straws or only giving them if asked. It looks like McDonald’s, one of the biggest fast-food chains in the world, is working on joining the effort to beonlinee more environmentally friendly!

These McDonald’s strawless lids are currently being tested at select locations, including some in Minneapolis. So, you may start seeing these environmentally-friendly lids popping up at your local McDonald’s soon!

The beloved restaurant has begun testing strawless lid designs in an effort to be more sustainable and produce less waste. This announcement follows McDonald’s pledge to go green, something that started as early as 2018.

McDonald’s states that, by removing small plastics like straws, they’re providing solutions to waste reduction. These lids plan to have a pullback tab so there are no accidental spills. The design appears to be very similar to the “sippy” cups offered in places like Starbucks.

Just like Starbucks, straws will likely still be available per request. While it may seem like a small decision, WWF reports that plastic straws have a life span of 200 years. When in doubt, you can always carry a spare reusable straw in your bag if you prefer one!

We’ve had the strawless lids in my area for about a month or so. I don’t love them, but I get why they’d want to get rid of straws.

So how do you drink a milk shake without a straw ? wait were not suppose to be drinking cows milk either are we but a soy latte is fine right!

    • Jodi P

You can ask for a straw. As it states in the article.

    • c

i get it, LOL…although when i was a kid in the 70’s burgerking’s shakes were made of soy milk.it was listed on the plastic cup. maybe because it was cheaper? of course now they would charge you double for this privilege.

  3. vicki

I got one of these cups yesterday. I thought they just forgot to give me a straw

  4. Michele

We have them at our McDonalds. They still ask if we want a straw. Don’t like the lid but maybe try paper straws instead?

    • Les

I didn’t like paper straws because you can taste them

    • L.

Paper straws are awful. They start disintegrating before you finish your drinl.

  5. Lizze

Yay! Appreciate the small steps to prevent more non-biodegradable plastic harming in our oceans ❤️ We love our reusable straws & cutlery.

  6. Amber

They’ve been using these where I live for a month or so. I figured they were just finding a way to cut costs with inflation. Not a fan, especially with kids. We just buy disposable straws and use those with them.

  7. Marinova

Good for the environment, bad for your teeth. I even drink my coffee with a straw to prevent staining. Soda is acidic and should also avoid your teeth.
I think so much of this can go overboard. I used to be a fan of EO Wilson until I began to see how short sighted things like the Half Earth Project are.

  8. Cathy Laughery

When they start banning water sold 9n plastic bottles, I’ll stop using a straw.

  9. Eileen Dover

pretty soon we won’t be “allowed” to eat hamburgers. Bug and soy burgers only. “for the earth”.

  10. CK

I think this is a great idea. I hope others will make similar changes.

  11. Simmonds Angie

Central Minnesota McDonald’s I’ve been reading at had had these for a month or more. Not a fan, but I get it.

  12. Dawg Deal

What’s next? Save a cup, bring your own? Hold out your hands? Ridiculous.

  13. Brenda Samy

Instead of mcdonalds worrying about straws they should worry about thier employees giving food to customers with roaches… i concerned ex -customer from Ruskin, Florida .

  14. Sara

Time to buy up all the plastic straws and hoard them 😂
