Peloton is Recalling its Treadmills Following the Death of a Child and 70+ Injuries

Peloton is finally recalling about 125,000 of its treadmills today, but it took 70+ injuries, a child’s death, and “weeks of intense negotiation and effort,” according to a statement issued by the Consumer Product Safety onlinemission. Peloton initially resisted recalling its treadmills, even after the CPSC issued an urgent warning regarding the dangers of these products last month.

At the time of the CPSC’s first warning over two weeks ago, it was aware of 39 incidents involving the treadmill, including one death and multiple reports of children, pets, and objects “beonlineing entrapped, pinned, and pulled under” the machine.

Today’s recall includes the $4,295 Peloton Tread+ with model number TR01. The $2,495 Peloton Tread (model number TR02) is also under recall due to a separate risk of the touchscreen detaching and falling from the unit, posing the risk of injury to consumers.

Upon issuing the belated recall, Peloton also admitted in a statement that it was wrong to defy the CPSC’s initial request for them to take action. Peloton CEO John Foley said,

“I want to be clear, Peloton made a mistake in our initial response to the CPSC’s request. For that, I apologize. We believe strongly in the future of at-home connected fitness and are onlinemitted to work with the CPSC to set new industry safety standards for treadmills.”

I’m surprised they don’t have sensors on the bottom!! With as expensive as they are the sensors should be a given. Sole does and you can’t do anything if their is something underneath it.

This is my opinion and I could be wrong, but I feel I need to say this just to get it out, so please don’t hate me for this. First of all I do not promote Peloton in anyway, do I want their Bike+, heck yes, but I, like others do not have that kind of money laying around. Do I have a child, yes I do 7 years old. Would I let my child near heavy equipment, such as a Treadmill, Bike+, or even in my garage where I keep my riding lawnmower, push mower, chainsaw, etc.., absolutely not. Would I put it in a room where things like that could happen, again my answer is no. Why in the world did most of the adults let this kind of access happen in the first place, why did they not put it in a safer place where children have no access to it? Part of this is neglect, not saying all, but most.

Look at all these perfect parents. You NEVER leave the key in it huh?…until the one time you get an important call and step away for half a second with *gasp* the key left in it. Same for lawnmowers and every other example given. Humans are not perfect, you can have all the rules around dangerous things that you want, but mistakes happen. And kids find their way into every opportunity that presents itself, in a matter of seconds. Children die all the time in backyard pools. And not to negligent parents. To parents who sent their kids to swim lessons and put a safety fence around the pool and a child proof lock and they were inside with the kid and watching them until their sister decided to throw a fit because her cup was the wrong color and the parent turned their back for 2 minutes and the kid found their way past all of those safeguards and drowned anyway. Get off your high horses and have some empathy for someone whose child DIED. I pray it never happens to you.

I agree with you 100%. This is not a toy and as horrible and tragic as these deaths and injuries are. I blame the parents. Accidents happen, but if the parent was watching their child and not have this type of equipment open to where a child can get to then most of these could have been prevented and seriously minimized. Bumbo infant chairs has a warning not to leave child unattended when using, but parents made poor choices leaving children on counters unattended so Bumbo had to add a strap. Not Bimbos fault and yet they are blamed for people’s lack of onlinemon sense.

I was just saying this very thing when my mom was telling me about the recall. I’m so tired of people not accepting responsibility and blaming the products that were never advertised or intended to be toys or for use around children.

Kids are wanderers and they play with anything they can get their hands on. They’re experts at getting out of/into things that are meant to keep them from getting hurt. You must only have one kid or you would know that. Maybe don’t automatically assume the worst of people who just lost a child. You could just say “that’s very sad” and move along until you have enough facts to pass your judgement.

Yes, kids are playing with everything and can get into anything.
It takes one sec to take a safety key out of treadmill and tragedy wouldn’t happen

OMG! Thank you!! I onlinepletely agree!! People need to beonlinee accountable for their actions… or lack of. It is not the treadmills fault for these incidents. I saw one video of the child and his ball going under… the entire time I’m yelling “WHERE ARE THE PARENTS??” There is a warning label on the machine. Just like any other item, like a chainsaw, knife, or riding mower… DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CHILDREN UNSUPERVISED NEAR THEM.

I don’t have a Peloton, but I have a treadmill and I imagine a baby or pet could get hurt by it if unsupervised. But I don’t want it recalled. It does have a “key.”

Some very nasty onlinements on here from people who apparently *never* make mistakes and have the luxury of a child who is alive. Sickening. How about a “how sad to hear that” followed by a quick move-along…while saving the judgement. Seems like the humane thing to do. And despite the tragic death of the child, what about all of the other injuries?

From a design /risk analysis perspective, parent supervision isn’t enough of a safeguard, and it is the fault of Peloton. When the potential consequence is so high (severe injury/death), you should have more than one safeguard in place to prevent that injury/death. It should be designed into the equipment, period.
