Macy’s Continues Downsizing with Another Round of Store Closures

Get ready to say goodbye to more Macy’s locations in 2021. 😢

Nearly one year ago, Macy’s announced a plan to revive its brand by closing 125 of its department stores by 2023. That was almost one quarter of its physical footprint at the time of the announcement. The retailer began the process by closing about 30 of its locations in 2020, and now CNBC is reporting that Macy’s plans to proceed with more than 35 additional store closures in 2021.

Macy’s next round of store closures is part of the retailer’s original plan to move out of underperforming malls and focus on e-onlinemerce and higher-performing physical locations across the US. But this year, there’s an added sense of urgency due to the pandemic’s negative impact on the department store’s fiscal health.

CNBC has shared the onlineplete list of Macy’s stores that are set to close, and it can be seen here. Liquidation sales have already begun at some of these locations, and the remaining stores on the list are expected to begin their liquidation sales later this month.

Our flagship store in downtown Chicago is closing soon. So disappointing. The riots and Covid must have done a number on their profits. So sad because they have an amazing Christmas display and buffet there. No more xmas memories there

I think the Water Tower Place location is closing, but I believe the State Street location is remaining open. The Walnut Room and windows should hopefully remain for next holiday season.

It is sad. So many stores closing.

They even closed a couple of the areas in the State Street store. The floor above the Walnut Room was rented 3 years ago so you could not overlook the tree anymore. There are other areas on floors that were walled off as well.

I love going to that store and seeing the architecture and beauty. The mosaic, marble floors, columns, etc.
I can only imagine what it was like in its heyday. (And yes, I do make purchases there as well.) I try to take photos on my phone every time I am in there since the next time it may look different. I do hope State Street is able to remain as a brick and mortar store.

Riots are *never* a good idea and lead to lost profits for businesses (and embarrassment for humankind), but I don’t believe that’s close to a major factor for Macy’s as it is facing the same challenges that other brick & mortars are. It’s sad these stores are closing, but times are changing. The large majority of us shop online for convenience and the costs of keeping these buildings up and running (versus warehouses for order fulfillment) has beonlinee crippling. We can’t have our cake and eat it too, though it’s disheartening to see❤️

Ours is closing. It’s really sad. I have many memories. Of the big stores Sears, Macy’s, and JCP in our mall, only JCP is left. We actually have had a hospital built in one of the old anchor store buildings in the mall. The hospital just bought the Sears store for additional medical offices. I bet Macy’s is next. Our mall is now essentially a giant hospital with a shopping center connecting the parts.

I know exactly what town’s mall you are talking about…I live there too 😉!! I guess it is less depressing to not have empty decaying store fronts but having a mallspital is kind of strange…lol!

This is my mall also. I loved sears. I think jcp will close sometime also since Sephora is moving on to Kohl’s.
The Macy’s building has been really run down for awhile now. The second floor has water stains and leaks when it rains.

Back in my mall rat days, it was so classy. I remember the little restaurant balcony up above the cosmetics counter and wanting so bad to eat there, and I loved riding the glass elevator. It was one of my favorite places to roam in the mall. Probably before Macy’s time—I can remember it as Kauffman’s and May onlinepany and O’Neill’s.

Must be multiple places because our hospital is leasing Sears and is using the auto place as a drive thru covid testing. Our Kohl’s is still around in another plaza. Granted, the main hospital building is across the street from the mall.

It’s sad to see these physical stores close isn’t it… But, on a savings side, we got a bunch of Xmas presents from NY&Co, Stein Mart and Gordman’s closing sales. The deals were so affordable we were able to donate to various shelters and organizations, that we wouldn’t have otherwise had the additional money to do so. BB&Beyond are closing too I believe…I’ll keep my eyes on the H2S updates for that.

I am from Chicago as well, the Water Tower Place is closing. I may stop by tomorrow to see if there are any sales.

Sadly, I have also contributed to the demise of these stores by shopping online during the pandemic. I normally prefer to shop in stores. I will be sad when this pandemic is over and my in store shopping choices will be so limited.

Ironically I’ve only shopped Macy’s online as the nearest one is about 5 hours away and this small town girl doesn’t do city traffic. I miss our local JCPs, ShopKos, and all the other lost stores. Its been more challenging to find a special something when there are fewer options to choose from.

So sad… I suspect the pandemic has made a big dent in profits. People either don’t want to go shopping for fear of the virus, or because the mask is so cumbersome. I have made numerous trips to the mall, but I don’t usually stay long.
