Say it ain’t so, Joe! 😭

Word on the street is that Trader Joe’s will no longer sell its popular Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chunks, and we’re having some strong feelings about this news! We were hoping that this was just a rumor, but at least one Tj’s associate has confirmed that the Chunks will soon be disappearing from the store’s shelves.

For years, Trader Joe’s Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chunks have been loved for their rich, chocolate flavor, their chunky texture, and their unique shapes and sizes. We loved them for mixing into cookie dough, making chunky brownies, and eating by the handful when no one’s looking.

Hopefully, they’ll be replaced with something equally awesome, but for many serious bakers, there can be no substitute. Hip recipe creator Ashley said,

When I first saw that these were going to be discontinued I jumped in my car and drove straight to the store. I have been making all my famous cookies with these Chocolate Chunks for over 3 years now. They literally are the best! They melt evenly and do not taste chalky as some chunks do. Seriously – when making cookies I use these instead of chips. They are literally the best chocolate I have found!

While there’s no convenient time to have one of your favorite grocery items disappear, the timing of this news seems especially bad with the holiday baking season right around the corner.

If you’re as bummed as we are about Trader Joe’s Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chunks disappearing, you can head on over here to let them know how you feel. Our TJ’s was still well-stocked when we checked, so you may be able to find them near you until they’re gone.

Alas, TJ’s has a long history of doing this with excellent, beloved products. It’s either because they don’t sell as well as some other similar product they carry, or the vendor that makes the product perhaps can no longer supply them, or can’t do so at the pricing TJ’s requires. A lot of really great products have disappeared over the years because of this facet of their business model.

Please No!!! These were the best chocolate chips out there. I just filled out the form to onlinement to TJ’s about this discontinued product.

  3. Jenn N

Just sent them feedback. I’m so sad 😞

  4. natd22

I cant find any brand of chocolate chucks right now and they are my favorite😭

    • Maggie

Enjoy Life makes dark chocolate chunks. They’re more expensive.

  5. staceats12

Dang I never even got to try it !

  6. Mika

I’ve been trying to find chocolate chunks for months now and I haven’t been able to find them in any store, including Trader Joe’s.

  7. Jamie

    Noooooo I just discovered these!

  8. serenity

OMG really? I just bought these for the first time. I haven’t tried them, but the price is awesome tho.

  9. Hayley

I love these and buy them all the time. So sad to hear that! I used to buy whole wheat flour from there too but that suddenly discontinued that.

    • Irene (Hip Sidekick)

This is definitely one item that is going to be missed by lots of people!

  10. Nancy B

I don’t like this news, Trader Joe’s. Please rethink.

    • Irene (Hip Sidekick)

Right! We’re with you Nancy B!

This is what I really dislike about TJ’s. I get that they are a small store and have to shuffle the product line but I like what I like. And there’s never any warning so you can stock up–stuff just disappears, often replaced by something faddy and stupid. Well, maybe Aldi will pick up these chocolate chunks. I loved TJ’s dill pickle popcorn but kept missing it because it is seasonal. I noticed Aldi started carrying dill pickle popcorn this summer so I tried it, and it was amazing! Probably cheaper than TJ’s, too.

I agree and the sad part is they changed suppliers on their semi-sweet chips too. They are way sweeter now and and taste totally different. 🙁

  13. Jennifer

Anyone in NJ, the Bridgewater TJ’s has a half a shelf of the semi-sweet chocolate chunks in stock right now. 😁

  14. Veronika

I didn’t realize they were discontinuing bc we always stock up. I bought the new replacement in the orange plastic and they are pretty gross. The original chocolate chunks were awesome, we would eat them every day… melt in your mouth or put them on ice cream. There’s no onlineparison they’re not the same. I don’t know maybe if they work on it they can get it right! But I doubt it. Probably a different onlinepany making them.

  15. Emainer

They’re back! I found them last weekend. They are in an orange-y package. They now say they’re dairy-free (not sure if this is different or not). I didn’t try them because I gifted them to my neighbor’s son who loves them. But I’m going to get more next time I go!

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks! We are going to look for those, Emainer!

    • Dee

The new ones in the orange package aren’t the same. Sadly they’re not nearly as good. I’m so sad because they were my favorite. The new ones are waxy and flat tasting.

  16. Kari

They are NOT the same. I bought 2 packages 😔

  17. Talin Rudy

Why oh why!!!!!!! Please bring them back asap!!!
