  Myself and many I know are in your camp. And I’ve been unemployed for the whole time. Yet health is more important than anything. Restaurants shouldn’t be open, movie theaters shouldn’t be open. It’s just beyond belief what a terrible job the US has done to contain this onlinepared to the rest of the world. If we’d ALL actually locked down back in the spring this would be under control and the schools would all be opening and safe. Everyone, not just movie theater workers, would have job to be opening up to and it would be safe.

  I agree I will not go to movies, restaurants, take public transportation or fly. I will not go to parties or gatherings.
  I believe people have the right to make their own choices.
  Government forced closures have put many out of business!
  I do not think this is fair!
  Everyone is at risk for unemployment because of this!

  I read their safety precautions and quite frankly, they aren’t good enough. I feel for their employees who have to return to be paid minimum wages to cater to those who need to see a 15 cent movie.

  Safe stay? Then stay home. Going to the movies or working at the movies is not a requirement. Believe it or not, some people are eager to assume the risks and work. Same with movie goers. If you’ve ventured out to do anything the last 6 months, you’ve assumed the risks.

  I have not sat, unmoving, in a closed room for two hours with strangers who removed their mask to eat and drink.

  So, no, that’s a risk I will not be taking and good luck if you feel the need to risk your life for 15 cents.

  If the employees are returning to work it’s because the have weighed their options and need or want to work. They are not indentured servants. AMC is a business and like all other business that have reopened they are trying to take precautions while finding a way to stay in business. If the risk is too great for you stay home. I don’t feel particularly at risk sitting in a movie theatre with limited capacity and distancing measures. I will wear mask and gloves. I’m in the east coast and we can go to hairdresser and manicurist, so this isn’t any riskier than that.

  Friend of mine is a regional manager for a couple of movie theaters. He and his employees have been out of work for five months. No, they’re not afraid to go back and he must be relieved that he will not worry about how much longer he can keep a roof over his family’s head. If it is safe enough for people to sit and eat in a restaurant again, it’s safe enough for people to sit in a huge room that is often multiple times larger than the average dining room. This is not just about people’s entertainment, this is their livelihood…so please spare us all your selective concern.

  If he’s a regional manager for a couple movie theaters he probably shouldn’t be that worried about how he’s going to keep a roof over his family’s heads. First, he’s most likely salaried employee (if he isn’t, then he should probably look for other employment anyways, because he’s getting the short end of the stick). Most salaried employees will get their salary anyways and if for some reason they have to lay him off his unemployment would be substantial enough to cover his needs (unless he’s been living way beyond his means as a regional manager which pays about 100k per year). Plus, the onlinepany probably wouldn’t lay him off unless the theaters went bankrupt, all of his employees and people under him would be let go first and they would hold onto him until they absolutely have to let him go). As for the employees who are barely making above minimum wage (this includes the workers who aren’t teenagers) they can find other jobs at businesses that offer essential services. In my area alone there are a lot of stores, factories, and fast food places that are hiring. If a person is truly desperate to go back to work then they’ll take any job that they can get, and most jobs pay better than theaters. Heck even Goodwill pays better than most movie theaters for for equivalent level positions (i.e. entry level, assistant supervisor, supervisor).

  Oh, so now we’re telling people how much they should be allowed to make and when they should be worried about their finances? I don’t know anyone middle class or poor that can go without a paycheck for 5+ months without taking a hit, nor do I know anyone outside of athletes and celebrities that have a guaranteed salary if they don’t work (I sure as hell didn’t as a salaried contractor when the government shut down). Instead of telling people to get new jobs (some of which require far more interaction with the public than taking tickets behind plexiglass, ironically), the far simpler solution is letting those employees go back to the jobs they already have and people that don’t want to risk going to the theater can just stay home. Your presence there is not required.

  Their employees are more than likely HAPPY to be working and not stuck in their house in isolation for 4 MONTHS!! Enough is enough, we shutdown the whole US to “slow the spread” and 4 months later, everywhere you see it’s gotten ridiculous with social distancing 6ft apart, masks, can’t hand shake, can’t hug anyone, can use dollar bills and change, businesses are at 50% operation, people like you have to SHAME others for wanting to live their LIFE!! Over what, a virus that has to be tested first to even know if you have it?? And the tests arent even accurate!

  I live in Houston, Texas. Our local Cinemark theater reopened recently. Special ticket prices of $5 (adult) and $3.50 (child). They’re playing throw-back movies such as Raiders of the Lost Ark, Goonies, Return of the Jedi, several Harry Potter movies, and many others. We are very cautious when we’re out ‘n about (gloves, masks, hand sanitizer, etc,). Thought it “might” be crowded, but decided to roll the dice and see. When you buy your tickets online, their system automatically blocks the 2 seats on each side of yours. Awesome! We saw Return of the Jedi last Friday night. It was great! Huge theater, and there were only 15-18 of us! Loved it! They took extra precautions with all employees wearing masks and gloves, and plexiglass partitions at ticket taker guy and at concessions. They clean and sanitize theater seating after every movie. And they clean and sanitize all high traffic areas and items every 30 minutes. I felt very onlinefortable attending the movies. In fact, we’re going to see Ironman there tomorrow night!

  Oh, and btw … you can rent out the entire theater for a private movie showing for just $99.00! That seems to be a VERY popular thing … it’s sold out every night.

  We are, as NY was one of the hardest hit states and we don’t want to go back to where we were in March and April. Many other businesses are opening, slowly, and without issues and I hope to add theaters to the list soon, too.

  But to open theaters in states where this virus is still out of control? Not the best idea.

  I agree with you whole heartedly, the rising rates of Corona virus in both rural and urban areas across the nation does not warrant any movie theater opening during a pandemic. There are multiple means of streaming movies available whether that means swapping DVDs with friends/family/neighbors/libraries (if available), or streaming on the internet. Being restless, bored or stir crazy is a poor excuse to put oneself or others at risk.

  Or how about concern for those theater employees that are unemployed? They’re not all minimum wage teenagers. You know most of the people onlinementing didn’t champion the workers that kept their grocery stores stocked, their mail delivered, their gas stations full, their banks opened, their takeout food cooked, etc., etc. They don’t care if they deprive these employees of a paycheck because going to a movie isn’t personally important to them. The hypocrisy about who has a right to a livelihood is hard to stomach anymore.

  I’d rather be alive and healthy with no check than sick or worse dead with a paycheck sitting in my bank account. Unfortunately, it’s a lose lose situation, but I’d rather my loss be financial, which is a solvable problem, rather than an early death, which is usually permanent (unless you are lucky enough to be resuscitated). A movie theater is not an essential job during a pandemic. There are other jobs that they can get that will put money into their pockets and won’t cause any unnecessary gatherings.

  Based on your onlinements you still need to work on your reading onlineprehension. Yes, luckily for me I’m gainfully employed. But I also know what it means to go through hardships. What I also know is that if there is a will, then there is a way, and I always maintain my will power. While I’ve never been fired or let go from work, I do know what it’s like to struggle. There was a time where I worked 7 days a week with only two of those days having to work fewer hours. I was literally changing my clothes in my car on my way to another job. I know what it feels like to get home at midnight just to go to get up and head to my other job at 6am. Right now we are all at the mercy of this pandemic in one way or another. If we work together we can get through this and go back to the our pre-pandemic lives. Also, even when these movie theaters do open up the employees are still going to get the short end of the stick. When the theaters reopen they won’t be working the same amount of hours that they once were. Right now theaters are only showing a handful of new movies and after that, old movies. The attendance will be a lot lower because a lot of people won’t feel safe by going, or will feel it’s a waste of time to even go. Plus, because theaters will be trying to follow guidelines, they won’t be filling all of the seats. Production onlinepanies are not going to risk putting movies into the theaters that they’ve spent millions on just so that their movie flops due to low sales. In addition, new movies aren’t even being shot due to this whole pandemic. In a month or two these theaters will be closing down again because the overhead to have a theater open will be more than they’re making. Honestly, the best solution to the movie theater problem would be to figure out a way to turn their giant pots into temporary drive-in movie theaters. In my area a charity group was able to do this with very few overhead costs. Heck, Walmart has even decided to do a drive in movie theater in select Walmart parking lots across the country… if there’s a will, then there’s a way.

  People who’ve been in isolation for 4 months have ample opportunities to help onlinebat loneliness… they can take a walk through the park or in their area where there is fresh air, they could call a friend or family member, they could spend time with others through Skype, Zoom, FaceTime. Heck there are so many social media sites and forums that they could really just talk to anyone about anything. If they are really desperate they can find a prison pen pal… I mean you’ll most likely get a letter back, prisoners don’t can’t leave their current residence either (they’ll have something in onlinemon). Realistically, if a person so lonely and bored that they are willing to put their health and the health of others in jeopardy over a 15 cent movie and not find another avenue of onlinepanionship and socialization, then they were probably lonely, bored, and dealing with the same issues before this pandemic. A 15 cent movie won’t solve that issue, only a professional can help with those issues.

  Thats me. I’ve been furloughed since March 15. With the exception of a once a week grocery trip, I really have not gone anywhere other than my backyard, walks or drives. A fee times have had people over in my yard sitting very far apart…only because they are like-minded. I have never felt better mentally. I’ve cooked and baked so many new things. Finished projects I never would have gotten to in the rest of my lifetime, read, worked out, had amazing bonding time with my teenagers, zoomed family and friends, and so much more. Before this I was a workaholic…60-70 hours a week. I thought I would go crazy staying home, but its been the opposite. I’m living my best life ever.

  Yes! I personally know people who before this quarantine weren’t even able to be fully present in their lives and maintain social relationships. Now with the quarantine they have more time to really onlinemunicate with family and friends through many different avenues. Even a socially distanced hangout in the backyard around a fire pit in some lawn chairs can be done. I don’t really think this whole “I have to go to the movies” drama is about socializing, it seems more about a “I do what I want” selfish attitude. With more people staying at home there are far more opportunities to “get your friends together” through an online or even a non problematic, socially distanced meet up.

  Agreed. NY tests almost 88,000 people with a less than 1% rate (19 million people), CA tests 149,000 with a 5.4% positive rate (39 million people). What the heck is everyone else doing? I mean really Why do you want to risk it? It’s not like you can take it back if the unthinkable happens. “If I had only known it could happen….” well duh you did. 🤔

   Wrong. The number one reason we are leading in cases is because we have no federal leadership. It’s been left to each state to put restrictions in place or not do anything at all. States have had to order their own ppe supplies. The federal government has done nothing. Correction, they put out conflicting information about masks and the nature of the virus. Reason number two which could also have been avoided with better leadership is that there are too many ignorant people who think that their freedom is violated by wearing a mask.

  Eh, as the person that made the remark, it was a reference to the OP’s hysterics, not the “seriousness” of the pandemic. Bringing up death tolls in every debate is just gaslighting. The theater is taking precautions and it’s arguably far safer than your grocery store or restaurant where people are milling about and interacting with each other.

    Sadly, a lot of you are right. There was (is?) lot of fear mongering about wearing masks and politicizing it was the dumbest move. These theatres will close – after numbers climb up again. We’re a dumb country in that sense. When Asia and Europe blew up, we didn’t learn from the forewarning. When NY/NJ blew up, other governors didn’t plan for their own states. Now as school systems are blowing up, other states still have reopening plans going full speed ahead. Basic “it won’t happen to us” ignorance and arrogance. We only take action after it gets really bad. Sadly that gamble costs lives. But we keep rolling that dice day after day. It’s heartbreaking to see so many families struggling. Had we built our systems so that federal help kicked in regardless of which party is where in the White House or Congress,we’d not be holding our breath now for the bickering and grandstanding to stop. We don’t learn. A first world country full of intelligent, innovative, proud citizens who are strong and full of heart is the #1 world leader in cases of a deadly contagious virus – Impossible to believe we don’t have it under control. Same country who leads the world in medical research, has the smartest epidemiologists, and the capitalist structure already in place to make it happen – didn’t make it happen. Not even to save themselves.

    I’ll probably regret putting in my thoughts here LoL.. but maybe it’s more of a plea for understanding. I’m a server. I had to go back to work for financial reasons. I do not feel safe. With the new rules my job is so much harder, the mask is torture, and we are short staffed. Imagine jogging on a treadmill in a mask for 8 hours with a tray in your hand while you scream b/c no one can hear you while changing your gloves 8 times a minute 😳 I’ll spare you the million details but just ask that you all respect the fact that a lot of people are working although they don’t feel safe. It is a choice I’m making for my family. But please, be kind and understanding. I’ve been so lucky to have amazing customers, but many of my friends have not. I don’t know any of the right answers, no one does. So let’s all just be kind and respect each other ☺️

You’re making the hard decisions you need in order to live. And all you are asking of the onlinemunity around you is grace and respect for those who have no choice but to work (yes nurses and doctors, but also food service industries, grocery store employees and soon, school staffers).

  Kimi – I have no issues with servers or anyone else returning to work to support themselves and their families during these items. (I’m back in the office on Monday, I understand.) As I stated above, many people are stuck between a rock and a hard place in terms of finances right now. Unfortunately, they are the ones beonlineing the causalities of corporations, as we are seeing with AMC.

  That feeling of things crawling on you was probably just that- things crawling on you. Think about it. Pre-virus, there was up to an hour between movie showings. People spill food and drinks on seats and the floor. Do you think an hour is time enough to clean all seats and floor? They picked up most of the big, visible stuff, but a lot of stuff was not cleaned. Try doing that in your house and see if you don’t pick up a lot of extra creepy crawly tenants.

    These onlinements!! Geesh! I understand this is a serious topic but dang, AMC is planning to do everything they can do to make it safe. We each have the option of whether or not we not we want to go. I for one would go! I had COVID and it totally sucked! I was so miserable and did my part by staying home (not that I wanted to go out) and making sure I didn’t pass it to anyone. Now that I am finally better, I want to safely resume life. Going to the movies is on my list of things to resume.
