23andMe Ancestry Kit

The reviews for this kit are awesome! Check these out…

Found out some critical information that absolutely revolutionized my diet and expectations of sleep and exercise. Tremendous positive and unexpected impact on general well-being with knowledge of simple and important details that made a big difference. Highly reonlinemend.

Got this kit last year during the holidays because it was on sale. Grew up without knowing my biological father so I was curious about what I “am” ethnicity-wise. This product also links you to “family” members, even though a majority of them are .03% related. Because of this product, it linked me with a half-brother I didn’t know about. Overall it was a cool experience and worth trying out.

23&me or ancestry.online. Which is better? Any reonlinemendations? Thanks

    • Liz

I was wondering the same and saw that ancestry only covers ancestry info and 23&me also does dna for predisposition of diabetes and other genetic illnesses.

  2. Liz

It is more expensive tho cuz I’ve seen deals on ancestry for about $50-$60.

    • jan

This one has a “health” element that helps you find out what kind of illnesses and diseases, etc you might have/get.

  3. jerisylvia

I have both Ancestry & 23andMe. I would say that if you have zero interest in building your family tree, then 23andMe is the better choice. The ancestry part is a bit more advanced and fun on 23andMe than it is on Ancestry. The health stuff is alright. It tests for a LOT… but most of it is so rare that you’re unlikely to get a positive. Ancestry is great for researching your family roots & has access to birth/death certificates, school records, military records, census reports, etc. Also of note, both give different results. On Ancestry I’m 36% Irish, but on 23andMe, I am 42% Irish. It really just depends on what interests you more as to which you should buy.

Thank you, very helpful information 👍🏻

I disagree with the ‘rare conditions you won’t test positive for’ as Celiac is the most onlinemon autoimmune disease, and if you have the genes, you will know it’s important to get tested for it! 80% of Celiac are undiagnosed 😢

      • BlueWaterGirl

Which is weird because the amount of people who ACTUALLY have celiac disease are pretty low, about 1%. I have very close friends who actually are but most think it’s cool to say they are. PS… it’s not.

Don’t reonlinemend these tests. Unreliable and they own your DNA. Read the T&C’s 🙂

You can run your raw data from these tests through a site such as Livewello or Promethease and it will give you lots of health info. Ancestry tests for more SNPs than 23&me, such as MTHFR.

    • nita

Can you explain what SNP and MTHFR stands for?

      • K

Here’s SNP definition SNPs act as chromosomal tags to specific regions of DNA, and these regions can be scanned for variations that may be involved in a human disease or disorder. SNPs found to be associated with disease may be useful for diagnostic purposes MTHFR is one specific SNP. There are many more. The MTHFR gene mutation inhibits the way the body processes folic acid and other important B vitamins.

    • saraneedscoupons

I second using the raw data and running it through promethease

I think I read somewhere here that you can use your HSA account on this? Has anyone done it? Did you just use your HSA card (mine has a MasterCard logo) or did you submit for a refund?

  7. Mskwin

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to answer my question!
