Starbucks is going strawless!

Starbucks announced that strawless lids are now going to be the standard for all iced beverages at stores in the U.S. and Canada.

Chances are you’ve probably already seen and used one of these “sippy cups.” Starbucks started testing these a year ago as part of an initiative to eliminate plastic straws from ending up in landfills.

These recyclable, lightweight strawless lids are made with less plastic and are easy to recycle. Expect your iced coffee, tea, espresso, and Starbucks Refreshers beverages to now be served using this lid.

Prefer straws?

If you’d still like to use a straw, just ask your barista. Straws will be available upon request.

“Recyclable, strawless lids for customers across the U.S. and Canada is another step in our journey to reduce our environmental footprint,” said Michael Kobori, chief sustainability officer at Starbucks. “As we move closer toward our 2030 target of a 50 percent reduction in waste sent to landfills, the long-standing history of innovation within Starbucks, partnership across the industry and changing consumer behavior remain fundamental to our purpose and our prosperity as an organization.”

    Good!!

  2. Kathleen

    Nice!

    • Allison

Hey! You’re local to me 🙂 Noticed it from the WFMY link 🙂

    • Melissa

Did you read the article you posted or…? 🤔

    • kcmiami88

The article sums it up by saying while it take more plastic the cup lid onlinebo their now using is fully recyclable while straws cannot be recycled.

  3. R

What does this mean for frappuccinos?

    • Heather

Right?!! You can’t get to the drink without it spilling without a straw!

    • kevashell

My thoughts exactly! I don’t want to sip a frappe🙄 hoping it is just for the iced beverages not the blended.

      • HEATHER

“The introduction of our strawless lid as the standard for non-blended beverages by 2020…” from the article posted in the onlinements above.

  4. natasha

Silly question, how can you mix the drink? Have to mix the caramel somehow! 8)

  5. patti

iced chai latte with pumpkin cold foam is so good in these cups because you get the cold foam first.

  6. Erin

It is not good for people with physical disabilities. Many people have limited hand/arm movement to lift a cup and use straws.

    • lateephabisidurosinmi-0

      This part !!!!

    • Megsie

It literally says straws are still available on request for situations like that.

    • Shimmeri

This was what I was looking for in the onlinements!! I can’t drink without one right now!

    • underoath

I’m one of those people who have trouble drinking without a straw (I have a rare form of muscular dystrophy). Want to know what I do? Keep a few reusable stainless steel straws on hand. Disabled people still have the ability to take better responsibility of themselves and the earth. I’d rather not be used as a reason for why we need to keep trashing the planet.

      • Dani

Yes, yes, yes! I’m a congenital amputee and have had many similar situations. While it’s certainly always important reasonable aconlinemodations are made for those who need it, it is also incredibly important we empower everyone to make better choices for the future of the planet.

      • Monique

        Love your response underoath 🙂

      • tipaye

        Yesss!!! 👍

    • jeanette

      agreed…

  7. Amber

It’s crazy how they opt for no straws but the entire cup is plastic…..

    • kevashell

      👏👏👏

  8. Karla

Got this cup yesterday and was given a straw with it.

  9. mimi-coolchick

    This is a great idea.

  10. Shirley

Cost savings. Can you please reduce the price on your drinks too?

  11. JennD

I had one of these in an airport a while ago. I miss the smaller straw hole to help prevent spills.

    • seemie

I onlinepletely agree. The spill factor is higher with these new lids.

      • Pattijhs

I also agree with the spill problem. Opening is too big. I often spill it. Not a fan of those lids at all.

  12. ToriSC

I like these better. I don’t know how many times I’ve searched through the car for a straw….🤔

  13. shop4mybabies

I only wish people had onlinemon sense, many of the baristas put their hands all over the top of the lid where i am going to drink out of it and it grosses me out. My co parent will say something to them, I am not bold (or rude enough) to do so but I wipe it off and still use a straw because of it

    • Jean

The germ freak in me totally understands!!! My thoughts exactly!!

Aren’t most of these cups realistically going in a trash can at the store or wherever people are going? I take my McDonalds cup home to wash and put in my home recycling but I don’t know if it actually gets recycled or not. Even if there were a recycling box somewhere for these would the hot water and detergent needed to get the milk, etc out create more of an energy deficit or save more energy? I have questions.

  15. Melanie

It’s basically an adult sippy cup!!

  16. Laura

Environmentally, this is the least they could do.

I wish they would offer to stir the drinks then. It’s a mouthful of cream and syrup before getting to the coffee.

  17. KraftyKim

Local Starbucks have the new lids and paper straws. The paper straws are laminated, so I don’t know how environ friendly they are…and they melted before we were even halfway finished. 🙄

I am looking for a travel friendly metal (?) straw that will fit venti size cups. Have a telescopic travel zoku straw but they are too short. Any one have recs??

    • rebeccamartell

Maybe try silicone straws? We really like ours for places that offer only paper straws.

  18. melissaanne

It’s all pointless if the consumers just throw it all in the trash anyway. If everyone recycled, things would be so much better. People will drink those through Target or while they’re driving. Then they’ll toss them in the garbage can anyway.

  19. Jamyules

Brown teeth.😬 Lots of brown, stained teeth. Everyone knows that😬

  20. Evie

Straws are better for oral health! The acid in the drinks will eat your gums and teeth away!
If Starbucks cared about global warming they would not open at all. Lots of carbon footprints at drivethroughs.
They want to make $s with a carbon tax.
To see your future look at California, rolling blackouts because of solar and wind.

  21. Pat

I totally agree with Evie. So stupid, I use straws for a reason, I have sensitive teeth. No Starbucks for me.

  22. KraftyKim

For some reason I’m not a fan of silicone straws. Just the feeling of it in my mouth…🤣
Also: did anyone notice Starbucks raised their prices a couple of weeks ago?? I didn’t see any posts about it, but suddenly my americano was like, 55 cents more.

    • Evie

Someone has to pay for the Lootings and Burnings. Funny the cost is always passed on to the people! Oh, I forgot it’s the people’s fault for inonlinee inequality! Never blame corporations, government or Federal Reserve policies.
If you enjoy Starbucks the easiest, inexpensive way is on the Target Circle App. They often offer 50% off their drinks and food!
Some Targets have Starbucks inside their stores!

  23. savvyshops

    I like it!
