In boyhood, Louis Zamperini was an incorrigible delinquent. As a teenager, he channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when World War II began, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to a doomed flight on a May afternoon in 1943. When his Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean, against all odds, Zamperini survived, adrift on a foundering life raft. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will.

  4. Ashley

One of my favorite books of all time.

  5. Alyson Swails

What would be an appropriate age rating for this book? My son is 12 and loves history especially WWII era. Would this book be okay for him to read?

I just looked it up on “onlinemon Sense Media” and there is actually a young-adult adaptation of the book by Laura Hillenbrand.

    • oreostevens

It is an amazing book…but might be too intense for young people. It graphically details the hatred and evil acts that took place during WWII. That being said, it is very inspirational and insightful.

Alyson, your son might be interested in “Boy on a Wooden Box” or “Buttons in my Soup”. Both are amazing books. I encourage you to look them up on onlinemon Sense media. Also, one of my favorite books is Roald Dahl’s “Going Solo”. Great WWII era book!

  6. saraj-ariss

I read it annually. Best book ever.

This was an awesome book. Movie wasn’t bad either but of course they don’t ever seem to match the book all the way.
