I use an app called GetUpside and save at least 10 cents a gallon or more at the pump. Most gas stations are included near me ( live in rural area) and it’s so easy to use. Just claim the offer, pump your gas, snap a pic of the receipt and that’s it! Money in your account within 2 days. I have accumulated over $75 in the past year from hubby and I using. Please use code MS244 and you will get an additional 10 cents off your first fill Up.

sounded interesting, so I looked at a map for GetUpside … there are around 10 participating stations in my area
at the stations where the gas costs around $2.20/gallon, I get 1 cent/gal discount
if the gas costs around $2.30/gallon, I get 3-4 cent/gal discount
if the gas costs around $2.40/gallon, I get 10-13 cent/gal discount
When I do the math, I think I’ll stick with the gas stations that have gas at $2.20/gal. The penny discount isn’t worth the trouble.
Shell has a decent Rewards Program, 3-5 cents/gallon. Can also get 3-5% cash back with some credit cards.

Where I am in N Fl gas averages 2.50 a gallon and the GU discount really helps my family of six. I also have a shell rewards but that only gets me max three cents a gallon off. I use whatever gets me the most savings which is most of the time GetUpside.

        • bipwop

$2.50??!!?? That’s quite a difference. I’m in S FL, and gas is averaging $2.34, with MANY of the stations having a price right around $2.20 (with those GU offers only a penny discount)
Crazy, huh, that your average is so much more, in the same state!
What I’m seeing is that the higher the price of gas, the higher GU discount, so it helps you much more than it would help me.
I normally use shell, my station is $2.20/gal, minus $0.05 rewards (gold for using them regularly). My gas at the pump is costing me $2.15/gal, and I get at least 3% cash back with my credit card, so … I’m at less than $2.09/gal!
OK, something else weird! My dad also lives in N FL, in St Augustine, and gas average there is $2.34, the same as here!
I don’t understand the difference, but I 100% AGREE WITH YOU that we should choose whatever gets us the most savings!!! That’s why Hip2Save helps us so much! YAY for savings!!!

I just moved away from Oregon after living there 15 years. We were around $3 when I left and a few years ago, our gas was over $4!

            • bipwop

YIKES!!! I think the north generally has a higher cost of living than the south. I know it made a huge difference between Connecticut and Florida (the difference in the cost of living is a reason why so many people from the Northeast retire to FL)
(BTW, we also had a period, 2011-2013, when gas was running over $3.50 here, and hit over $4.00! I think it was a national thing)
PS I also lived in Oregon for a time – beautiful state!!!

  3. Sharon

Shell gas is so much more expensive than other stations. I never buy it there.

    • bipwop

Not here (SW FL)! Price is $2.20-$2.30/gal. My shell station is $2.20/gal, and I get $0.05/gal rewards there , so $2.15/gal at the pump. Shell is very onlinepetitive in price here.
Gas stations HAVE to be, or they don’t get customers!!

  4. Holly-Marie

I don’t like that you have to link your debit/credit card to the Shell Rewards card.
