Capital One Data Breach Affects 100 Million in United States

Heads up Capital One users!

Capital One recently determined that an outside individual obtained unauthorized access of personal information relating to people who had applied for credit card products and Capital One credit card customers. This unauthorized access occurred on March 22 and 23, 2019.

This data breach affects over 100 million people in the United States and approximately 6 million people in Canada. The information accessed by the breach may include social security numbers, names, birth dates, addresses and more.

Capital One is currently investigating the data breach and says that it is unlikely that the hacker shared the information or used it for fraud. Affected customers will be notified by Capital One through a variety of channels once the investigation has been finished and will be offered free credit monitoring and identity protection.

I received a text notification asking if I was making purchases in Florida when I live in Texas. They were able to decline the purchases and will be sending me a new card.

I don’t think that has anything to do with this issue. Seems most banks will alert customers of fishy activity nowadays. My husband got a call a few months ago. Apparently someone was making small charges, under $25 or so for a few days, then got ballsy and tried to make a $2500+ purchase at Best Buy in another state. It’s a card he uses a few times a month, so he thinks the number got skimmed when he used it to fill up for gas.

I heard if you were affected by this all they will be offering you is free credit checking. That is what people trusted them to do in the first place.

Preach! I’m so tired of all these onlinepanies inonlinepetence in protecting our information. I’ve been through this with 2 health insurance onlinepanies, Target, the IRS, etc and now possibly Capital One

Social security numbers & credit card numbers weren’t included, was just various info from people who applied, nothing to worry about with this one. The idiot did it just to see if he could it seems.

But if you read more it says he got 140,000 social security numbers & 80,000 bank account numbers. As well as social insurance numbers, which is Canada’s version of social security. Basically he got into applications where people & businesses applied for secured credit cards. Luckily he was arrested, so hopefully he really didn’t have time to get the info out.

Then the quotation marks were unnecessary. In most onlinement sections when transgender people are involved, quotation marks around a gender usually mean sarcasm.

The 140,000 SSNs were only taken from people who used their SSN as their employer indentification number to apply for small business credit cards. The 80,000 bank account numbers were only the ones linked to secured credit cards.

It wasn’t just secured credit cards. Considering the number of applications affected, it also included unsecured personal cards and unsecured small business cards. Capital One hasn’t issued over 100 million secured cards.

Thanks for posting the link about equifax as well. My husband wasn’t effected but I was when I checked the link. Because my bank caught the charges & I only had to go 10 days without a debit card I just qualified for the 3 years of credit monitoring. I’ll take it! I’m just proud to know now how they got my info. I was worried it was because of an online purchase or a scanner put on an atm or gas pump. Now I won’t be so paranoid. Honestly we all need to go to credit cards & cash only. It’s too easy for hackers to get our bank info. I even bought RFID sleeves to put our debit cards in.

I cannot tell you how much I despise this onlinepany. We have been on their spam mailing list for 3 years now. We get offers for credit cards at least 2 a month. I have saved a bag full of them for a while. I called them, messaged them and asked them repeatedly to please stop wasting paper and stop sending me unsolicited mail. Every time they said it would take 4-6 weeks before it stops. It never did. How can they think that I would ever sign up for one of their services or products when they are so inconsiderate?

I love Capital One… We have 5 credit cards with them and have always had a great customer experience with them… I once called about an issue and we got to talking and long story short about a week later a package came from them and it was a camera, tri-pod, SD card and case with a card saying to use it at my husband’s uponlineing 20th high school reunion!!! They have always handled issues fast so hopefully this isn’t that big of an issue… We had issue with our local bank getting breached and it was a hassle to use out own debit cards due to them “over monitoring” from the breach that we switched to just using our capital one everyday and paying it off… Plus I love all the rewards cash back!!! Hopefully it all works out😉

Definitely happened I took pictures of it because I was so shocked especially when I looked it up and it’s about $100 set on Amazon… We are very good customers and anytime I have ever called about anything they are super nice… I would post the pictures on here but there is no way to do that on this site…

Thanks for posting these things. We were part of the Equifax and are getting reimbursed for the identity theft protection we already had (thankfully). We have a main cc and a backup through 2 different banks. Both were stolen this month.

I don’t understand why people find the story unbelievable… The reason we called customer service in the first place was to get pre-authorization for a very large purchase we were making… I’m guessing since we are very good customers that’s why they did it… I guess I’m just shocked that people find the story unbelievable… We have 5 different cards with capital one and use them daily because with have had nothing but issues with our local bank. Maybe I just have a way with customer service but I was definitely surprised when the camera came and the hand written note😉
