I know NOTHING about gardening. Can someone tell me if it’s too late to plant bulbs this year? If so, can bulbs purchased in fall 2018 be planted next planting season?

I was given a large amount of bulbs to plant last fall and I didn’t plant them.

I would plant ones that are marked as perennial but probably not annuals. Perennials should grow and possibly bloom some this year but definitely next year. As for the bulbs you were given, best thing to do is to just try planting them. Who knows if they will onlinee up but they may surprise you! Good luck!

I did that with some tulip bulbs a few years ago. Got tulip bulbs for free when our university pulled them out. Totally forgot about planting them and left them in the garage. Planted them 8 months later, and they came up! The first year they came up, they did not flower. This year they all flowered. Plant them. If you want give them a little bulb food like bonemeal when you plant them. But, they might be just fine. Mine looked really nasty and I thought I killed them in the garage.

I think it depends on the zone your in

Each bulb set you buy has a planting guide with it for your zone and it will tell you when to plant them. It’s easy, don’t worry.

Today at Aldi’s I saw bags of bulbs for 99 cents. There was also hanging baskets with dead flowers in them for 99 cents. The hanging basket alone is worth 99 cents so still a deal if you need a hanging basket.

Oh cool! Thanks Susan, we’ll be on the lookout for the bulbs!

I bought and planted asiatic lily bulbs this time last year. Two out of ten came up last year and didn’t flower. This year about 15 came up (they multiplied) and most have buds already. I think most bulbs require a year of winter cold to flower. For reference, I live in zone 5b.

Off topic: At my local Lowe’s they had the 56 oz softsoap for $2.74 on clearance. Stocked up.

    • Liza (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks R! We’ll have to check for that!

Bulbs are so hardy. It’s always worth a shot. They may not do well the first few years because they used so much of their storage food for survival. But after that u should be good. I’ve had bulbs in a dry container, no dirt. No water and bloomed. Of course in that case it seriously depleted its energy but it will recover once in the ground.

These are summer flower bulbs so they should onlinee up and flower this year if you plant them now. Lilies are perennial so they will onlinee back next year. Gladiolus will flower this year but won’t onlinee back in certain zones unless you dig them up and bring them inside then plant them again next spring!

I was ecstatic that i purchased a few more.
