  Just make sure you use Poly Pellets not beans or rice. Poly Pellets can be washed, obviously not the other two options. Make sure you use the formula (10% of their body weight plus 2 pounds). Weighted blankets are costly to buy and a little less to make, but a good night sleep is well worth it!

   I’m wanting to purchase weighted blankets for my girls! This may sound crazy, but more than price, I’m concerned about how to wash these. Does anyone know how to clean weighted blankets? Are they machine-washable?

  Great question, Sara! Here is what they list in the details on how to clean these –
  “Wash & Care – Delicate setting in cold water. Line dry is best, but tumble dry low can be used”

  Some are machine washable on cold. They reonlinemend spot cleaning and washing only occasionally. These blankets are amazing and I always onlinepare it to when I am at the dentist and they lay the X-ray cover on you while they take xrays and that is exactly what a weighted blanket feels like. It gives me instant calm. I can not say it onlinepletely reduces my stress but for those moments I am overwhelmed I can put the blanket on and it helps my mind shut off for a few minutes

  My daughter is on the autism spectrum and she has SPD. My son is your classic ADHD kid(does not sleep!) They both have weighted blankets. For my daughter she needs the feeling of being wrapped in something or enclosed in a small space to be able to calm herself. My son has never been a good sleeper. I got him a 12 # blanket (he is a tall but very thin 59#). The weight of it over his whole body has helped tremendously getting him to slow down his brain and body. I cannot say enough about how beneficial these blankets can be. Some kids also benefit from weighted lap pads during homework time. They are not cheap but if you can save up enough to buy one they are worth every penny and more. It is a great investment. My daughter got hers when she was 8 and still uses it every night. She is now 16. I have taken these to a local laundry mat. They do laundry for you for about $1.50 a pound. It is not dry cleaning. Simply an industrial washer and dryer. I have also washed them myself in my soaking tub. It is big enough to agitate the blankets by hand and then rinse. Then I use big beach towels to wring out as much water as possible and lie them across the tub to dry. If you wash in the summer when the air conditioning is on or in the dead of winter when the air is dry from the furnace and cold they do not take too long to dry. If you do invest in one of these you will not be sorry. They have saved my sanity (and I am not even the one sleeping with one!).
