Did you mean useful? If so, I was curious what others think about heating food in silicone. I know for safe food prep, plastic needs to be bpa free. I have had some silicone muffin molds for a while, but have been concerned about using them. Also would like to do candy molds, but again not sure if it’s really safe.

Hi HipMomof3! I’m a scientist for a plastics onlinepany, and while I don’t work with silicone specifically, I thought I’d add my 2 cents.
Silicone is a food-safe, inert (non-reactive) material. With that said, there are some things that I’m usually concerned with…
I’m very cautious when purchasing anything plastic that is made cheaply by a onlinepany I have never heard of. Silicones and other plastics can be made with fillers that either make it cheaper or easier to process. If you have concerns, I’d stick to well known onlinepanies that would be following FDA guidelines (even if their manufacturing is overseas, they would likely be following US or European standards).
I also dont think it’s a good idea to use very high heat, say greater than 425 degrees, on anything plastic, even if it claims to be ok.
      Hope this helps!

Thank you for your response. From the little research I’ve done online regarding this, the only thing I did find was to buy higher quality silicone, don’t buy the cheap stuff. I’m trying to microwave less and don’t have a double boiler, but my only option the other day was to microwave my chocolate to melt it.

This is a good price. It’s easy to clean and worked so well when I made cake pops for my daughter’s birthday.

Oh cool! Good to know it worked so well for cake pops! YUM!

Bought one from a grocery store a while back (make Oreo balls every year) and I LOVE how easy it is to use! Such a time saver!!

Look into Di Oro and Dreamfarm! They have high quality silicone that are very useful.

    • HipMomof3

Thank you, I will look at these brands.

It says “select style.” The options are pot only, insert only, then tools only. I’m assuming you need to purchase both the pot and insert?

I have 2. I make a lot of chocolate covered strawberries and cakeballs for weddings. The purple handle lasted about a year and then broke off. I can use them without the handle just fine, but just a warning to those who want something stronger. I paid $25 for each of mine. I bought a second one when i realized i needed one for white chocolate and one for dark chocolate or two colors.

Thanks for the heads up on these! That sounds so yummy!!
