My daughter will be 8 next month and still doesn’t know how to ride a bike w/o training wheels. She’s had 2 bikes but doesn’t have a lot of interest and I feel like this is something she should learn now instead of later. Kids don’t seem to ride bikes as much as we did when I was younger (I’m 40+). It’s not a matter of getting her outside because we live in South Florida and are always outside. Any opinions? Is this something I should make her learn to do now? Thanks for any advice.

    • Ksantos128

I think she should learn it! My kids are 7 and 3 and both can ride a bike! My cousin is 30 and regrets not learning how to ride a bike! Try and do family bike rides or find some trails to go on! But you are right, kids don’t ride bikes as much as when I was younger!

My oldest son is 8 and has NO interest in learning to ride a bike w/o training wheels. He had a pretty big wipeout on his scooter recently so now he’s afraid he’ll fall off his bike. I may just resort to bribery this summer… 🙂

      • Tia

I’m sorry to hear about his fall. My daughter too loves her scooter much more than the bike. I’ll see what I can do and good luck getting him back on the horse!

Have you tried doing it with a group of kids? My son was probably about that age when he learned. My friends kids knew how to and mine didn’t so we all went to the back alley and rode for awhile. Both my kids picked it up that day with now spills.
I recently rode an adult bike with training wheels ( even tho I didn’t need them they were already attached). It was actually pretty awesome 😂.

I train my kids very late too (8-10 years old). I learn a treat that i take out both the pedals. Find small hill in the park and let them seat on the bike to how to balance the bike When they can balance put the pedals back to the bike and teach them pedaling. I kids knew how to bike within 2 weeks.

      • Minnie

My explanation is not good. But i think you can figure out.

        • Tia

Thank you, Minnie! I figured it out, no problem. I’ve never heard of taking off the pedals but it makes a lot of sense. I’m going to mention it to my husband tonight.

    • Sue

Try one of those balance bikes. They look really neat!

    • Missy

Your right kids don’t seem to want to go outside and ride bikes anymore. I rode my bike all the time and everywhere when I was younger. We’re teaching our 6 yr old how to ride without training wheels, it’s def different teaching girls then boys, my son picked it up really quickly. my daughter doesn’t want to get hurt and it’s very dramatic lol.. Good Luck!

    • Ashley

To help her learn, take off the training wheels and the pedals. She can get used to gliding and balancing, and then you add the pedals back. It allows kids to learn one skill at a time and is really effective. A lot of kids learn in a few hours this way.

    • Elizabeth

My daughter is 8 too and has a little sister age 6. Neither can ride without training wheels. My husband gets frustrated that they can’t do it yet without the training wheels but i prefer not to push them. Im in florida too but feel like a city girl and dont spend too much time outdoors. Especially with this heat.

    • Jess

I wouldn’t fret too much about it. Tried and tried when my oldest was “the right age” to teach her to ride, but she was too fearful of falling/failing. We just let it go and she finally started biking at 12…2nd child was lateish too, probably about 8. It’s one of those things for a lot of kids that the harder you push it the more it seems insurmountable. When they are ready they will know!

    • Queenjen87

I wouldn’t push it too hard. I didn’t take off my training wheels until I was 9/10. And then the neighbor took them off for me one day lol. Just keep encouraging her to ride., and it will onlinee with time.

Big advocate for balance bikes. Thats how my two younger kids learned, and they picked it up very quickly. Also, definitely more interested in riding when their friends are doing it =)

  4. Jennifer

My 2.5 yo and 3.5 yo both can ride without training wheels. I started them on balance bikes until they could ride solid and then introduced pedals.

  5. Tia

Thank you ALL for your tips and advice. I don’t belong to one of those mom groups so I appreciate you all jumping in on a non-money saving topic. I’m going to let her decide when she’s ready but definitely take off the pedals and see how she does with that.
