Got Romaine Lettuce in the Fridge? 🥗

Well, bummer. If you’ve recently purchased chopped romaine lettuce, you may want to toss it in the trash. 😔

In addition to the salmonella egg recall, the FDA and CDC are now investigating a multi-state outbreak of E. Coli illnesses likely linked to chopped romaine lettuce sourced in Yuma, Arizona.

There are currently 35 people in 11 states who have beonlinee ill: Connecticut (2), Idaho (8), Illinois (1), Michigan (1), Missouri (1), New Jersey (7), New York (2), Ohio (2), Pennsylvania (9), Virginia (1), and Washington (1). These people reported beonlineing ill during March 22nd and March 31st, 2018.

Before buying romaine lettuce at ANY store, health officials reonlinemend that consumers ask retailers where their romaine lettuce was sourced from. Do not eat or buy it if it’s from Yuma, Arizona – OR if the retailer is unsure. Also, if you have already purchased products containing chopped romaine lettuce, including bagged salads, salad mixes, or prepared salads – be sure to throw them away.

I bought a salad kit from Costco over the weekend. However, it wasn’t listed on Costco’s recall page.

    • Aly

I just sent a message to the salad supplier Five Star Foods (Simply Fresh for Costco), and they said they source all of their romaines from inside California and not connected to the outbreak. This is only for this specific brand. The affected romaines were produced in Yuma, Arizona .

  2. alley

I just ate a whole bag of salad from Aldi last night 😒

    • pam

      aldis is from California

      • Lindsay

My spring mix from Aldo says from US and Mexico. Does that mean the Is parts are from California? Thanks!

        • Lindsay

          Geez auto correct!

I meant to say that my Spring Mix from *Aldi says “From US and Mexico” on the bag. Does that mean the *US parts are from California? Thanks!

    • Kayla

I ate cesear salad kit from Aldi yesterday. It said from Mexico.

  3. Michelle

Our kroger in Indiana had signs out and all the salad gone over the weekend… That’s not good on top of the Iceberg shortage we were already having…

  4. Lana

All this has to be kept in perspective. I am not making light of the situation but you are more likely to get sick form eating out then both these recalls onlinebined. On the egg recall we are talking 206 million eggs and 22 people got sick.

    • Tracie

There are those who are living with severely onlinepromised immune systems, (myself included.) We are much more susceptible to these types of illnesses. I really appreciate Hip2save bringing attention to these matters. If you don’t want to worry about it, great! But there are those of us who have to worry about it.

      • Aleshia Jones

Not to mention the risk to pregnant women, elderly, and children. Better safe than sorry. Would hate to be one of those 22 people. Lets also remember that many people may even go unreported.

      • 50ShadesofLipstick

Lana’s point was that most people (i.e. people that don’t have to take extra precautions due to certain health conditions) don’t have to really worry about beonlineing seriously ill since the odds of a healthy adult getting sick from contaminated food is pretty low. Obviously there are exceptions, but they’re not the majority of people.

    • LR

Thanks Lana. I really appreciate warnings, but also agree that perspective is important.

      • Tia

Perspective sure but you also have to remember that many people don’t report or don’t attribute their sickness to the eggs/romaine.

I bought my groceries online from Walmart and purchased several premade salads. I recently received an email from Walmart to return to the store for a refund. Unfortunately I had already eaten them. I was violently ill for 5 days. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. I thought I had picked up a bug. Don’t take any chances.

    • Diane

I ate a romaine salad at a restaurant yesterday.

  5. moria

Thanks for the warning! I hadn’t heard about this and plan on grocery shopping tomorrow night.

    • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      You’re welonlinee Moria!

  6. Jess

Jus made some salad using the organic Aldi spring mix for lunch . I am wondering if that is included as well , now I cant decide if I should eat it or not !

  7. cpnkay

I found out about this at Panera on Sunday. I tried to order a salad but Kale was the only option they had.

  8. Beth

You see? This is why I eat chocolate and potato chips. Never heard of a recall on them, have ya? Huh? 🙂

    • Christina

      Lol, Beth 😂

    • Allison

      😂😂😂

    • Laura

Exactly! 🙂 – thanks for the laugh

    • ResseCup

HA!!!! Potato chips seem to always be a safe bet.

    • Dipz

      Lol

    • riss

I agree! Hooray for our staples 😉

    • Kris

Except that potato chip recall last year….

  9. Shoppingfan

Another thing to keep in mind is that not all stores know exactly where their products onlinee from esp those that buy from a 3rd/secondary vendor source. I work for a large retailer in Tx. We pulled all possible salads but as a precaution they pulled anything that could potentially be included since the the log could say primary vendor OUT so X items were purchased from B. In this case u may not know the exact source bc they can pull from a variety of places. We would rather our customers be safe & they appreciate that far more!

  10. Dipz

There was a recall notice at Fred Meyer

  11. Melissa

Is it only pre-kit salads? Or all lettuce? I just bought a head of romaine lettuce from our local grocery store.. still haven’t eaten it.

    • klvnh

According to the fda.gov website, “At this time, ill people are not reporting whole heads or hearts of romaine.”

    • Sue

From the reports I heard, it’s just chopped romaine. I just bought a Caesar salad kit at Aldi, but hadn’t yet eaten it. I threw the bag away. Although I don’t like wasting the money, it’s not worth it to get sick for a few dollars.

  12. *Angela-Miles*

You are very welonlinee hip!! 🙂 🙂

  13. keesh

It’s always something..its best to grow your own if you can.

  14. julie

What about the “baby lettuce field greens”….has baby romain leafs in it…technically not chopped 🤔

    • Lindsay

I was wondering the same thing! Is baby romaine included?

  15. MidwestMama

Noticed a sign at the drive thru today.. McDonald’s will not be serving salads until further notice. The manager told me their salad mix supplier in Arizona has a containamtion issue. I’m assuming it’s for this same recall.

  16. Crystal

Where does Trader Joe’s get their salad???

  17. Gege1804

Panera bread was all out of romaine lettuce today so that explains it…

  18. Miriam

My niece died from onlineplications related to E. coli. It’s hard not to constantly worry now about my own kids. I appreciate the advisory and I try to always double wash veggies, especially anything from a bag. I don’t know if that will always do the trick, but it’s better than nothing.

  19. Justine

    Good to know, thank you.

    • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      You’re welonlinee!

  20. Helen in Meridian

Early this morning Fred Meyer had pulled all their chopped romaine and a notice there said they couldn’t guarantee that their lettuce was not from the infected farm, so they pulled it all.

  21. truckingwife2018

Thank you for heads up. Wonder how we can find out if any of the restaurants at rest stops use the Lettuce. Guess not going to eat till all clear on all lettuce

    • Juma

That’s an awesome thought glad you brought that up. I have a friend who is a long haul driver and I sent him the link earlier today about the beef recalls. He texted back and said he was about to get dinner after catching up on emails and messages he was happy I sent him that as he was in TX at the time.

  22. Sue

    Thanks for posting this.
