As I’m preparing our Halloween costumes, I can’t help but think about last year. My 5 year old (4 at the time) really wanted us to all dress as Star Wars characters. He also insisted on wearing his Darth Vader pajamas from the Disney store. I bought these at a really cheap price thanks to Hip2Save! It was last minute and I didn’t want to spend a fortune.

Thankfully the local thrift store was open and it happened to be one of their half off days. I found a bear costume for our one year old and we changed it into an Ewok with a brown T-Shirt. I found a black pair of pants and a vest for my husband. Finally after searching the racks I found a tan vest for myself. I spent under $20 including the weapons and trick or treat bags at Dollar Tree. It wasn’t perfect but everyone knew who we were. We found everything else in our closets and it came together perfectly! Thank you for helping me think frugally at all times!

Home made look so much better than store bought to me. I think because the material is better with home made. πŸ™‚

As much as I wanted to do thrifty, my daughter wanted Cure Rosetta (Lucky Clover) from Doki Doki. I looked online and they were all cosplay prices ($80-$130) and they were still missing wig or boots, so I decided to make my own. I spent $40 and the best part is that it fits my daughter just right. Every time I onlineplete a piece and fit it on my daughter I can see her excitement build up. It’s not perfect (for my standards) but she doesn’t care about perfect, she only cares about dressing up as her favorite character. πŸ™‚

$40 isn’t bad for a special, unique, made-with-love costume! The memories will far outweigh the cost!

  14. Mary

Love this!!πŸ˜€ Really wish more people did this and encouraged kids to be creative, dress up as characters from books or people from history instead of just wearing a “bloody” t-shirt to get a sack full of candy πŸ€”

    • June

Thank you! My son really wanted to be a power ranger this year and we did the 40% off costumes at target for him. My daughter still allows me to dress her so Rosie the Riveter is her costume this year. Everything was in her closet and it turned out great!

      • Mary

😍 Rosie the riveter.. what a great idea!! And a great story of who she is to share with others!! My girl was Fern from Charlotte’s web! Everything from her closet and her beloved stuff pig! Enjoy your kiddos and these memoriesπŸ˜˜πŸ’Ÿ

Great Costumes! This is what my husband and I would call “precious days” because it goes fast. Cute kids and cute family.

    • June

Thank you! It goes by so so fast!!!!

  16. Georgia

    Yay mom! Looks great!

When my kiddos got older, I just gave them the challenge to make their own halloween costumes out of the toys, clothes, and anything else in the house we had. I might have picked up a wig for them or paint if they needed it, but I posed it as a challenge for them to get creative. For instance, one year, one of the girls was Hannah Montana, one was Miley (her alter ego), then another year, they used the “princess” costumes they had for dress up and went as that. Worked well and cheap for mamma too.

Were you able to get the lightsaber at the dollar store? Did it light up?

    • June

Yes I bought it at Dollar Tree. They had blue , red and green. It didn’t last very long after Halloween but is served its purpose πŸ™‚

    Adorable! Brings back fond memories.

This is the way to do it! I dressed as a bank robber with a stripped shirt, black skinny jeans, and hat I already owned. I used a belt and brown bag to craft a money bag that I could tie around my waist (so I didn’t have to carry it). While there were about ten of my outfit (it was an idea from pinterest after all), I was happy I spend nothing to make it. Every Halloween our goal is a free outfit. That way we don’t waist money on something we might only wear once.
