   We made these last year too! Just one pointer that Crayola crayons work best. Melissa & doug crayon pieces didn’t melt and the ones from restaurants and stuff were really grainy.

   We use to do this at the daycare I worked at to help get more use out of our broken crayons plus it seemed easier for toddlers to use them

  Take a sharp knife and cut length wise on the paper. It should cut through the paper.

  My two year old loves peeling the paper off all the crayons.. So all the crayons in our house are already paperless. Lol

   This is such a cute idea! To piggy back an idea off it you could use the coloring pages to make origami boxes. Putting the crayons inside the box, and don’t worry it’s beginner level origami. Not anymore onlineplicated than the origami fortune tellers we made in school.

   Yes, I second the Crayola brand if you can do it. If you have an Ollie’s discount store, I found a box of 64 Crayola for less than $2 today 🙂

   These were cute to make with my kiddos. However, they have a hard time holding them (vs. crayons which are easy to hold) and they find that they can’t make fine lines when using them…so I don’t see us doing this again lol.

   We did these last year. They turned out super cute, but what I learned: 1. Only use crayons crayons, otherwise a white layer of wax forms on top of heart crayon with the cheaper brands. 2. You will need more crayon pieces than you think. 3. Your hands will hurt from getting the wrappers off. My kids loved them and it was fun to do something other than candy, but it was time consuming.

  I’d take a utility knife and slice the paper down the side and the kids can slip them off 😉

  Yeah, we tried this as well. I agree with all your points (except maybe the wrappers, since my daughter can’t seem to leave them on the crayons! 😉 ) and I have one to add: you may not want to use a mold that you intend to use for food. I used a silicon heart mold like the one pictured above and it smelled strongly of wax afterward. I’m not even sure I got all the wax residue out of the mold. Crayons are nontoxic, but the smell really bothered me. We’ve melted pony beads in the oven before and the crayons were much stronger and worse in my opinion.
