   That’s great! My girls and I went to the mall today to pick up or free travel sized item from BBW and our free $10 at Yankee Candle. I’m trying to teach them the value of coupons, too.

   I am not sure if it is good or bad but I was coupon shopping at walgreens today with my 4 and 2 year olds. The 4 year old asked for a bathman toothbrush and the 2 year old asked if it was on sale. 😉

  When I was a kid I always wanted chips and so my mom told me we would only buy them if they were on sale. One day I asked loudly in the store “Mommy is milk on sale?” 🙂

   Good for her! Recently I was at Dollar Tree waiting forever behind a woman who was buying a huge order of plates and glassware. When it was finally my turn, a longish line had formed; however I was buying only three items and paying in cash so in and out, right? Well, when the cashier saw my two little coupons, she immediately called a manager, much to the dismay of everyone in line who had been patiently waiting as the line grew while she waited on the previous customer. The manager eventually came out and took the coupons with no problem. When she asked the cashier what the problem was, the cashier told her she “didn’t even want to try” using the coupons. I was baffled. Rather than simply attempting to scan–as the manager successfully did–she’d rather hold up the line so her manager could do it for her. It’s good to know there are Dollar Trees–and a younger generation–that aren’t fearful of coupons!

  My dollar tree is the same way i normally will have just 1 or 2 coupons and they make such a big deal about it and call a manager it’s just not even worth it 🙁

   That’s great! When my 5 & 3-yr-olds see something they like in the store, they ask if it’s on sale or if I have a coupon. Reactions of others that overhear them are priceless!

    My 4yr old son went to the grocery store with my dad the other day and when my dad grabbed something he said, “Pop Pop, that’s not on sale. You should buy the other one with the orange sticker.”

    I love this post. My 6-year-old daughter was playing an “educational” game in which she needed to define sail and sale. She told my husband the correct definition for sail but for sale she said, “oh yeah that’s when mom uses a coupon and gets stuff for cheap or even free!”

    Love it!! The other day my 5 year old asked how much a game was that she wanted. I told her $10 and she goes never mind that’s too much. When we go grocery shopping she always asks if I have a coupon for the items she wants.

    Halfway down the aisle my son picks up a box of cereal and yells “can I get this kind” without saying a word, he notices my expression and says “never mind, I know, you don’t have a coupon and it’s not on sale” 😂

    Thats so awesome!!! Ive been trying to instill the value of couponing to my kids since they were little too. Even now when my family doesn’t HAVE to rely on couponing I still do it so we can save more $$$ for our future.
    And it has paid off. My 14 yr old daughter understands how if she finds the deals & coupons, she can get waaayyy more school clothes & shoes for the budget she is given. I am confident that she will grow up to be a budget savvy adult; and I owe alot of it to the folks here at Hip 2 Save!!! 😊

    I am all for saving money but I also hope we are teaching our kids about healthy eating. Sometimes it is okay to forgo a sale or a coupon if we are making healthy choices. You wlll notice that a lot of junk foods are the free ones because the manufacturers want us to eat their foods and get addicted to the junk. Almost like cigarettes. This is an epidemic. We are what we eat. Pay more on groceries and less at the doctors. Either way we pay.

  Agreed. Just because it’s free doesn’t mean you should. I’m not perfect and I have 3 kids and no more than 3, but soda is a no-no for my kids. I don’t care if my mom or in laws think I’m crazy. We all do what we think is best for our kids.

  I totally agree! This is not always what she snacks on..yesterday it was yogurt and grapes 🙂 gotta have moderation and it’s still fun to have some “junk food” every now and then…especially if it’s free!!! 😉

  When I read the title of this post I thought it was going to be “teaching them young to NOT buy these kinds of foods” and I was surprised that it was the opposite. Most food freebies are foods/drinks that are really not good for our bodies. Like I tell my daughter when she wants to eat “fake” food…I might as well poor you a cup of dish soap and just add some food coloring and a ton of sugar. (Dramatic I know, but it’s silly and gets the point across).

  Totally agree!! Thank you soooo much for pointing this out! Childhood obesity is an epidemic! What you put in is what you get out! If you eat like crap, you feel like crap! It’s like putting sludge in a high performance machine! Teach your kids to nourish their bodies for maximum performance mentally and physically!!

  Agreed! I am conflicted with this article… Freebies are fun, but I would much rather show my daughter how to sale shop healthy food. If we get freebies like that we usually give them away.

    This is such a valuable lesson. I try to teach my 14yr old to patiently wait for sales or coupons. One time he wanted an Xbox controller from Walmart which was not on sale but was smart enough to price match it to Amazon. 😊

    Nice! Feels great to use coupons from before when I was hesitant for whatever reason. I must say Hip2save ( thanks!)did give me confidence in using coupons much more confidently though I still need to work on a lot of jargon that is used here. 😀

    A better lesson would have been taking her to the produce section in an upscale grocery store and giving her $5 to spend on fruit…. And then taking her to Aldi to see how much more equally nice produce she could buy with the same amount.

    Teaching kids how to buy junk food helps reinforce the idea it is ok or justifiable because it is low cost. The doctor bills and medications down the line cost 100 times the price of the lays.

  That’s a good idea! I’ll have to try it sometime. However she does go with my to Kroger often and I’m teaching her it’s often not a good deal to buy things there unless they are on sale, and then we often go to Aldi to get other items that are not on sale at Kroger and she is just amazed at how much cheaper Aldi is! 🙂 I try to teach her how to save in every area (clothes toys ect.) not just food! Last week I gave her my $10 JCPENNEY coupon. And let her pick out some new school clothes..she was so happy to have gotten TWO shirts for $2 after coupon! 😀 so just so you know…my point was to teach her how to save money and live a frugal lifestyle…not at all promoting buying junk food! 🙂

    Some of us are obese but, not because we eat junk food ! I have 4 young lady’s and there so, small and they eat healthy and they coupon with me too, and there allowed to get a bag of chips ! I was skinny at one time , I had a masectomity and histerectomity a yr ago, I work 7 days and eat healthy can’t loose weight so, doctor said it may be my endocrine gland, going Monday to the endocrine, and this past week started a cross fit class, I’m struggling but made to class today too! And my job is from 6pm -6am and 10am-3 pm everyday since , I take care of a 92 yr old man, I manage to coupon this am at Kroger, and randalls and did my class ! But, please don’t judge everyone , we buy whatever we want to this is about teaching couponing not about judging ! At the end we are the ones that pay ! And no I don’t get government help! And some of us if e have more than 2 children it’s because in my case ! I got twins , thank you Collin and team keep posting deals we all choose to do them or not ! We appreciate your posting !
