Chocolate Dipped “Football” Sliced Apples

Chocolate Dipped “Football” Sliced Apples

yield: 4 SERVINGS

prep time: 10 MINUTES

cook time: 20 MINUTES

total time: 30 MINUTES

Ingredients

  • 3 large apples, sliced
  • 1 bag Wilton brand candy melts in dark chocolate
  • 2 cups pineapple juice
  • white cake decorating icing
  • 1/4 teaspoon or more of vegetable oil, or shortening if your chocolate beonlinees too thick or sticky

Directions

1

Soak apple slices in pineapple juice for about 10 minutes and dry onlinepletely. This is to avoid apples from turning brown.

2

Melt chocolate according to package (I followed the double boil stove method).

3

Fill a medium sized pot 1/4 of the way with water and use a glass bowl or Pyrex glass to set inside the pot to slowly melt the chocolate pieces. You don’t want to overheat the chocolate so turn off the heat once the water starts to boil. Stir frequently.

4

Dip the apple slices in the chocolate. I found it easier to use a long toothpick. If chocolate beonlinees too thick or sticky, try stirring in a touch of oil or shortening.

5

Place apple slices on parchment paper and let dry for about 15 minutes. Use white cake decorating frosting to pipe on the “football laces”.

apple game day snacks

Looking for a creative and fun football-themed treat for game day weekend?

Score some cute food points with these yummy chocolate-dipped “football” apple slices! It’s a festive, no-bake treat that’s sure to be a big hit! Keep in mind that melting chocolate evenly can be a little tricky… in fact, I tried this recipe first with chocolate chips, and it didn’t turn out photo ready for this post.

When I switched to chocolate candy melts, and melted them in a double boiler method on the stove along with a tiny bit of oil, it helped give the chocolate a thin consistency which is much easier for dipping. The package of melts states that you can microwave to melt as well.

How long in advance can i make them? Is the pineapple used to make the apple not turn brown???

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Yes sorry they won’t turn brown by using pineapple juice. Yes you can definitely make ahead of time. 🙂

      • daisy carrasco

So excited to try. Thanks 🙂

      • Amy Stotts

Oh, I LOVE the pineapple juice instead of lemon or lime juice! My son hates how the lemon/lime makes them sour! I’m going to have to do this for my friend’s superbowl party!!!

  5. Jessica B

Yuhumm! That’s a good idea, so cool!

  6. FuzzyPeach73

Another variation would be to use orange juice instead of pineapple juice…it gives it a slight orange flavor–which is delicious, especially with chocolate!–and helps keep the apples from turning brown as well. 🙂

    • Lindsay

Thanks so much! We have several football fans who are not pineapple fans at our house.

  7. Thia

I LOVE THESE! Lina you’re the best, these will be great for the Super Bowl! So cute, they will be a hit for sure, and healthy – (you should see some of the things I’m planning on making, not so healthy) so I’m excited about these! Thank you!!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Ah thanks!

I’ve found from experience that chocolate chips don’t melt very good for applications like this where you want to coat something. That’s because choc. chips are meant to stay in chip form when they are cooked! I’m not fond of the taste of melts, so I use chips anyway. You might want to add a little coconut oil to the chips. A little goes a long way and the properties of coconut oil being a solid at room temperature and melting at body temperature is just perfect for chocolate. While I usually manage to use chocolate chips without the oil, white chocolate chips absolutely require it. They do not melt at all without it. I’ve wasted at lot of chocolate learning this!

I love the look of the chocolate footballs! This should be a fun project! Thanks for your efforts, Lina!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Thanks so much!

I use a tiny dab of crisco with nestle milk chocolate chips. Have to be careful not to overheat or it won’t work but to me the milk chocolate tastes so much better as a coating especially on strawberries.

My son, 10 years old was trying out some football ideas this past weekend. He made little smokies into footballs and football players. I can’t post a pic here but they were so cute.

  16. Chelsey

Making these with Velata chocolate is a breeze! The chocolate is made for melting, and all you need to do is put it in the microwave! http://www.chelseylawson.velata.us

    GO HAWKS!

I can never get the melts to stick to anything. It’s thick even when I add oil. Then my item always slips off the holder into the chocolate. I can not get any of this right. Last week I tried to cover cake pops..what a disaster…too thick, gloopy, oil didn’t help and everything slid. For the things that stayed on, the chocolate dripped in globs and didn’t look smooth….ugh.

    • terri

and those melts, once they harden they are tough as bricks…I threw out all the pops because I thought I would break a tooth. I prefer choc chips so much more, at least I won’t break a tooth.

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Oh no 🙁 that sounds like my experience with the chocolate chips! One thing I did have to make sure apples were onlinepletely dry and using a toothpick helped 🙂

  19. Patti

Does it matter if the apples turn brown if you’re covering them with chocolate? 😉

    • Sara

I’m wondering this as well, since I have everything I’d need aside from the juice and want to try making them!

      • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

No just your own personal preference 🙂
